  • Measurement of fibre-fibre contact in three-dimensional images of fibrous materials obtained from X-ray synchrotron microtomography
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 637:1, s. 143-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of wood-fibre mats was investigated using high-resolution phase-contrast microtomography at the beamline ID 19 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. A method for data reduction to quantify the degree of fibre-fibre contact has been derived. The degree of fibre-fibre contact and bonding plays a fundamental role in the mechanical properties of cellulose-fibre mats, paper materials and cellulose-fibre composites. The proposed computerised automated method consists of two parts. First, fibre lumens are segmented using a watershed based method. This information is then used to identify fibre-fibre contacts in projections along the z-axis of the material. The method is tested on microtomographic images of mats made of wood pulp fibres, and is shown to successfully detect differences in the amount of fibre-fibre contact between samples. The degree of fibre-fibre contact correlates well with measured out-of-plane strength of the fibrous material.

  • Frequency combs on chip for interferometry applications
  • 2022
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Optical frequency combs have revolutionized the field of laser spectroscopy. A frequency comb is a type of laser that generates an array of equally spaced coherent laser lines. Indeed, the outstanding performance of frequency combs in terms of bandwidth and stability is readily attainable in bench-top systems. Integrated photonics offers a platform for the implementation of frequency combs relying on nonlinear optics processes. This thesis explores the generation of chip-scale frequency combs based on supercontinuum and microcomb generation and its potential use for interferometry. This investigation covers the capabilities offered by supercontinuum generation in the normal dispersion regime. The spectral broadening is realized by pumping a straight waveguide with a short duration pulse meaning that the pump is a comb itself. Therefore, its performance in terms of coherence and the transferring of noise to the broadened spectra have been investigated. Microcombs can be generated on a microresonator starting from a continuous wave laser. In this work, we study microcomb generation in the normal dispersion regime using a novel dual-cavity architecture. The appended papers describe the nonlinear processes involved in the microcomb generation. We have studied its capabilities in terms of spectral flatness and symmetry, together with the coherence attained on these combs. It is found that these capabilities make microcombs a suitable spectral sources for spectroscopy. Furthermore, the capabilities of different interferometry techniques are analyzed in terms of resolution, sensitivity and measurement time in order to perform on-chip dual-comb spectroscopy.

  • Platicon dynamics in photonic molecules
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications Physics. - : Nature Research. - 2399-3650. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coherent dissipative structures known as platicons can be reliably generated in photonic molecules, resulting in deterministic and reproducible microcombs derived from a continuous-wave pump. However, the supermode spectrum of standard photonic molecules displays numerous avoided mode crossings, distorting the spectral envelope of platicon microcombs. Here, we obtain a platicon microcomb using a photonic molecule configuration based on two coupled microcavities, whose size differs by an order of magnitude. This results in an engineered microcomb spectrum that closely resembles the one generated in an ideal single microresonator with just one frequency mode shift. We observe the coupling between the repetition rate of the platicon microcomb with the frequency of the pump laser, an effect originating from the dispersive-wave recoil induced by mode crossings. Using two identical platicon microcombs, we make use of such coupling to realize dual-comb interferometry. These results contribute to understanding dissipative structures in normal-dispersion microresonators and offer an alternative to applications such as spectroscopy and metrology.

  • Relating Magnetic Properties and High Hyperthermia Performance of Iron Oxide Nanoflowers
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 122:5, s. 3068-3077
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated, in depth, the interrelations among structure, magnetic properties, relaxation dynamics and magnetic hyperthermia performance of magnetic nanoflowers. The nanoflowers are about 39 nm in size, and consist of densely packed iron oxide cores. They display a remanent magnetization, which we explain by the exchange coupling between the cores, but we observe indications for internal spin disorder. By polarized small-angle neutron scattering, we unambiguously confirm that, on average, the nanoflowers are preferentially magnetized along one direction. The extracted discrete relaxation time distribution of the colloidally dispersed particles indicates the presence of three distinct relaxation contributions. We can explain the two slower processes by Brownian and classical Néel relaxation, respectively. The additionally observed very fast relaxation contributions are attributed by us to the relaxation of disordered spins within the nanoflowers. Finally, we show that the intrinsic loss power (ILP, magnetic hyperthermia performance) of the nanoflowers measured in colloidal dispersion at high frequency is comparatively large and independent of the viscosity of the surrounding medium. This concurs with our assumption that the observed relaxation in the high frequency range is primarily a result of internal spin relaxation, and possibly connected to the disordered spins within the individual nanoflowers.

  • Modelling the effect of different core sizes and magnetic interactions inside magnetic nanoparticles on hyperthermia performance
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 477, s. 198-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental intrinsic loss power (ILP) values, measured at an excitation frequency of 1 MHz and at relatively low field amplitudes of 3.4–9.9 kA/m, as a function of the mean core diameter, for selected magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The mean core sizes ranged from ca. 8 nm to 31 nm. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that those with smaller core sizes (less than ca. 22 nm) were single-core MNPs, while those with larger core sizes (ca. 29 nm to 31 nm) were multi-core MNPs. The ILP data showed a peak at core sizes of ca. 20 nm. We show here that this behaviour correlates well with the predicted ILP values obtained using either a non-interacting Debye model, or via dynamic Monte-Carlo simulations, the latter including core-core magnetic interactions for the multi-core particles. This alignment of the models is a consequence of the low field amplitudes used. We also present interesting results showing that the core-core interactions affect the ILP value differently depending on the mean core size.

  • Free-Space Transmissions in the Upper- and Lower-THz Bands Assisted with Photonics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report our recent studies in photonics-assisted free-space transmissions in both the lower (0.3-0.5 THz) and upper- (~64.5 THz) terahertz bands. We adopt the hybrid electro-optical approach for the lower-THz signal transmission, whereas a directly modulated quantum cascade laser is used for the upper-THz band.

  • Controlling the Emission Zone by Additives for Improved Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : John Wiley and Sons Inc. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 34:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The position of the emission zone (EZ) in the active material of a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) has a profound influence on its performance because of microcavity effects and doping- and electrode-induced quenching. Previous attempts of EZ control have focused on the two principal constituents in the active material—the organic semiconductor (OSC) and the mobile ions—but this study demonstrates that it is possible to effectively control the EZ position through the inclusion of an appropriate additive into the active material. More specifically, it is shown that a mere modification of the end group on an added neutral compound, which also functions as an ion transporter, results in a shifted EZ from close to the anode to the center of the active material, which translates into a 60% improvement of the power efficiency. This particular finding is rationalized by a lowering of the effective electron mobility of the OSC through specific additive: OSC interactions, but the more important generic conclusion is that it is possible to control the EZ position, and thereby the LEC performance, by the straightforward inclusion of an easily tuned additive in the active material. © 2022 The Authors.
