  • Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) Studies in Chemistry : Present and Future

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter illustrates how resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is used to address questions in chemistry, with special focus on the electronic structure and catalytic activity of first row transition metals. RIXS is a two-photon process that is the x-ray equivalent of resonance Raman spectroscopy. The final states correspond to vibrational, valence electronic or even core excitations. In addition to the advantages of a local element-selective x-ray spectroscopic probe, RIXS gives new information compared to single-photon x-ray absorption and x-ray emission experiments. Metal L-edge RIXS shows intense metal-centered ligand- field transitions, even in cases where they are spin or parity forbidden in optical absorption spectroscopy. By selecting different resonances by appropriately tuning the incident energy, it is possible to isolate different ligand-field and charge-transfer transitions. The observation of a large number of electronic states that can be properly assigned, sometimes with the help of theoretical methods, gives novel opportunities to quantify metal-ligand interactions and their contributions to reactivity. RIXS in the K pre-edge can be used to obtain L- and M-edge like spectra including insight into charge-transfer excitations all with the advantages of a hard x-ray probe. Finally, it is shown how time-resolved RIXS down to the femtosecond timescale probes the orbitals of transient reaction intermediates. The usefulness of RIXS in chemistry is shown for a diverse set of systems, including coordination complexes, metal enzymes, and nanoparticles.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Synchrotron Light Sources and Free-Electron Lasers : Accelerator Physics, Instrumentation and Science Applications - Accelerator Physics, Instrumentation and Science Applications. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030232009 - 9783030232016 ; , s. 481-524
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design trend for the magnet system of modern synchrotron light sources is moving towards smaller magnet apertures with a reduction of magnet dimensions as a consequence. There are several reasons for this: • to increase the number of focusing cells in a given ring circumference • to increase the multipole field strengths • to reduce the total cost of the magnet and vacuum-systems This chapter describes the technology of integrating several magnets in a common steel block. Several new system properties are presented in the chapter: • A precise internal alignment of the individual magnets in the common block achieved by utilizing Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machines. • A reduced production and alignment cost. • Exclusion of separate girders. • The integrated block design yields a high rigidity to mass ratio, pushing up vibration eigen-frequencies. This chapter first describes the MAX IV integrated multi-magnet system in quite some detail. The results of the characterization of the system are presented at the end of the chapter.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the dramatic increase in x-ray source brilliance and associated coherent photon flux, holography with x-rays has become feasible and is increasingly used for real-space investigations of static and dynamic properties of nanoscale systems. We describe the basic principles and capabilities of the method and present the current state of the art. A particular emphasis is put on the investigation of magnetic nanostructures, where x-ray holography has been applied at synchrotron radiation sources and free-electron x-ray lasers to investigate dynamic effects on time scales down to the femtosecond regime.

  • Imperfections and Corrections
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: CERN Accelerator School: Introduction to Accelerator Physics. - Geneva : American Ceramic Society.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • After a review of linear imperfections and their causes, we discuss how to model them, the diagnostic equipment needed to monitor them, and the correction algorithms to fix the problem they cause. We first address linear systems - beam lines or linear accelerators. In a later part we cover circular systems, such as storage rings.
