  • Preliminary results from a study of luminescent materials : For application in the beam imaging system at the ESS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B. - : Elsevier. - 0168-583X .- 1872-9584. ; 540, s. 227-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of the development of the beam imaging system at the European Spallation Source, luminescent screens have been fabricated by the flame spraying of scintillating materials onto stainless steel backings. A total of seven screens were produced, three of chromia alumina (Al2O3:Cr), two of YAG (Y3Al5O12:Ce) and two of a 50/50 mix of these. The properties of these screens under proton irradiation were evaluated using a2.55 MeV proton beam at currents of up to 10 μA. Irradiation times were up to 25 h per sample, during which luminescence-, spectrographic-, thermal- and current-data was sampled at a rate of 1 Hz. Preliminary results of these measurements are reported here; with a quantitative analysis presented for one of the chromia alumina screens and a qualitative comparison of all three material types. The luminescent yield for chromia alumina was determined to be around 2000 photons/MeV for a virgin screen, and was found to drop to 1.5% after 167 mC of proton irradiation. A recovery of the luminescence of chromia alumina to >60% was observed after beam current was reduced for an 8 h period. Observations indicate that the YAG and mixed composition screens retain higher luminescence than the chromia alumina even at temperatures of over 200 ◦C. It is indicated that the luminescence from YAG feeds the R-lines of chromia alumina in the mixed composition screens.

  • Longitudinal end effects in a linear wave power generator
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073 .- 1996-1073. ; 13:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Even though the magnetic circuit of a linear electric machine is very similar to a rotating electric machine, they diverge in one fundamental property. The linear generator is open in both ends, i.e., the magnetic circuit is non-symmetric. This paper investigates and discusses the drawbacks of this non-symmetric design in a linear permanent magnet generator, installed in a wave energy conversion system. A two-dimensional geometry has been utilized for the numerical calculations in a finite element method simulation tool. The results present an increased cogging force and significant core losses in the translator as consequences of the longitudinal ends in the machine.

  • Model-Based Parametric Study of Surface-Breaking Defect Characterization Using Half-Skip Total Focusing Method
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of nondestructive evaluation. - : Springer Nature. - 0195-9298 .- 1573-4862. ; 42:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the demand of structural integrity in manufacturing industries is increasing, the ultrasonic array technique has drawn more attention thanks to its inspection flexibility and versatility. By taking advantage of the possibility of individual triggering of each array element, full matrix capture (FMC) data acquisition strategy has been developed that contains the entire information of an inspection scenario. Total focusing method (TFM) as one of the ultrasonic imaging algorithms, is preferably applied to FMC dataset since it uses all information in FMC to synthetically focus the sound energy at every image pixel in the region of interest. Half-skip TFM (HSTFM) is proposed in multi-mode TFM imaging that involves a backwall reflection wave path, so that the defect profile could be reconstructed for accurate defect characterization. In this paper, a method involving Snell’s law-based wave mode conversion is proposed to account for more reasonable wave propagation time when wave mode conversion happens at backwall reflection in HSTFM. A series of model based simulations (in software simSUNDT) are performed for parametric studies, with the intention of investigating the capability of defect characterization using HSTFM with varying tilt angle and relative position of surface-breaking notch to array probe. The results show that certain TFM modes could help with defect characterization, but the effectiveness is limited with varying defect features. It is inappropriate to address a certain mode for all characterization perspectives but rather a combination, i.e., multi-mode TFM, should be adopted for possible interpretation and characterization of defect features.

  • Chemical Milling of Cast Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo Alloys in Hydrofluoric-Nitric Acid Solutions
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Corrosion. - : Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP). - 0010-9312 .- 1938-159X. ; 73:4, s. 394-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The behavior of cast Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo during chemical milling in hydrofluoric-nitric (HF-HNO3) acid solutions with 1:3 and 1:11 molar ratios was investigated using electrochemical and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. Faster corrosion rate in 1:3 solutions was measured for Ti-6Al-4V than for Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, whereas in 1:11 solution Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo exhibited higher corrosion rate. Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements revealed difference in the Volta potential between the α-laths and the β-layers in the Widmansttäten microstructure indicating operation of microgalvanic cells between the microconstituents when in contact with HF-HNO3 solution. The AFM topography measurements demonstrated faster corrosion of the α-laths compared to the β-layers, in both alloys. In 1:3 solutions, higher α/β height difference was measured in Ti-6Al-4V, whereas in 1:11 solution, the difference was higher in Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo. The results revealed that the chemical milling behavior of the two investigated alloys is controlled by the microscopic corrosion behavior of the individual microconstituents.
