  • Femtosecond Laser Pulse Driven Caustic Spin Wave Beams
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 126:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2021 authors. Controlling the directionality of spin waves is a key ingredient in wave-based computing methods such as magnonics. In this Letter, we demonstrate this particular aspect by using an all-optical pointlike source of continuous spin waves based on frequency comb rapid demagnetization. The emitted spin waves contain a range of k vectors and by detuning the applied magnetic field slightly off the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), we observe X-shaped caustic spin wave patterns at 70° propagation angles as predicted by theory. When the harmonic of the light source approaches the FMR, the caustic pattern gives way to uniaxial spin wave propagation perpendicular to the in-plane component of the applied field. This field-controlled propagation pattern and directionality of optically emitted short-wavelength spin waves provide additional degrees of freedom when designing magnonic devices.

  • Investigation of magnetic droplet solitons using x-ray holography with extended references
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A dissipative magnetic soliton, or magnetic droplet, is a structure that has been predicted to exist within a thin magnetic layer when non-linearity is balanced by dispersion, and a driving force counteracts the inherent damping of the spin precession. Such a soliton can be formed beneath a nano-contact (NC) that delivers a large spin-polarized current density into a magnetic layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Although the existence of droplets has been confirmed from electrical measurements and by micromagnetic simulations, only a few attempts have been made to directly observe the magnetic landscape that sustains these structures, and then only for a restricted set of experimental parameter values. In this work we use and x-ray holography technique HERALDO, to image the magnetic structure of the [ Co/ Ni] x4 multilayer within a NC orthogonal pseudo spin-valve, for different range of magnetic fields and injected electric currents. The magnetic configuration imaged at -33 mA and 0.3 T for devices with 90 nm NC diameter reveals a structure that is within the range of current where the droplet soliton exist based on our electrical measurements and have it is consistent with the expected size of the droplet (similar to 100 nm diameter) and its spatial position within the sample. We also report the magnetisation configurations observed at lower DC currents in the presence of fields (0-50 mT), where it is expected to observe regimes of the unstable droplet formation.

  • Voltage control of frequency, effective damping, and threshold current in nano-constriction-based spin Hall nano-oscillators
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 121:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using micromagnetic simulations, we study the interplay between strongly voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), Δ K = ±200 kJ/m3, and gate width, w = 10-400 nm, in voltage-gated W/CoFeB/MgO based nano-constriction spin Hall nano-oscillators. The VCMA modifies the local magnetic properties such that the magnetodynamics transitions between regimes of (i) confinement, (ii) tuning, and (iii) separation with qualitatively different behaviors. We find that the strongest tuning is achieved for gate widths of the same size as the constriction width, for which the effective damping can be increased an order of magnitude compared to its intrinsic value. As a consequence, voltage control remains efficient over a very large frequency range, and subsequent manufacturing advances could allow spin Hall nano-oscillators to be easily integrated into next-generation electronics for further fundamental studies and industrial applications.

  • Modulation-mediated unlocking of a parametrically phase-locked spin torque oscillator
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 105:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modulation of an oscillator is crucial for its application in communication devices. While the output power and linewidth of single magnetic tunnel junction-based spin-torque oscillators (MTJ-STO) are not yet adequate for practical uses, the synchronization of such devices can overcome these limitations. Here, we investigate the modulation behavior of a parametrically synchronized MTJ-STO and show experimentally that modulation of the synchronized state preserves synchronization as long as the modulation frequency, integral(mod), is above a characteristic frequency, integral(unlock). The unlocking frequency increases with the modulation amplitude in agreement with analytical estimates and numerical simulations. These phenomena are described as a non-resonant unlocking mechanism, whose characteristics are directly related to inherent parameters of the oscillator. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

  • Parametric excitation in a magnetic tunnel junction-based spin torque oscillator
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 104:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using microwave current injection at room temperature, we demonstrate parametric excitation of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-based spin-torque oscillator (STO). Parametric excitation is observed for currents below the auto-oscillation threshold, when the microwave current frequency f(e) is twice the STO free-running frequency f(0). Above threshold, the MTJ becomes parametrically synchronized. In the synchronized state, the STO exhibits an integrated power up to 5 times higher and a linewidth reduction of two orders of magnitude, compared to free-running conditions. We also show that the parametric synchronization favors single mode oscillations in the case of multimode excitation. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

  • Tuning exchange-dominated spin-waves using lateral current spread in nanocontact spin-torque nano-oscillators
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an efficient method to tailor propagating spin waves in quasi-confined systems. We use nanocontact spin-torque nano-oscillators based on NiFe/Cu/Co spin-valves and study the ferromagnetic and spin-wave resonances (FMR and SWR) of both layers. We employ homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, resembling spin-torque FMR, to detect the magnetodynamics. The external field is applied in-plane, giving a parallel configuration of the magnetic layers, which do not provide any spin-transfer torque. Instead, the excitation is caused by the Oersted field. By varying the thickness of the bottom Cu electrode (t(Cu)) of the devices, we tune the current distribution in the samples, and thereby the Oersted field, which governs the spin wave characteristics. Both the average k-vector and the bandwidth of the SWR increases as t(Cu) increases.

  • Generation linewidth of mode-hopping spin torque oscillators
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 89:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments on spin torque oscillators commonly observe multimode signals. Recent theoretical works have ascribed the multimode signal generation to coupling between energy-separated spin wave modes. Here, we analyze in detail the dynamics generated by such mode coupling. We show analytically that the mode-hopping dynamics broaden the generation linewidth and makes it generally well described by a Voigt line shape. Furthermore, we show that the mode-hopping contribution to the linewidth can dominate, in which case it provides a direct measure of the mode-hopping rate. Due to the thermal drive of mode-hopping events, the mode-hopping rate also provides information on the energy barrier separating modes and temperature-dependent linewidth broadening. Our results are in good agreement with experiments, revealing the physical mechanism behind the linewidth broadening in multimode spin torque oscillators.

  • Oxidation states and quality of upper interfaces in magnetic tunnel junctions: oxygen effect on crystallization of interfaces
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics-Condensed Matter. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 26:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we have deposited an Fe-57 sensor layer at the upper interface, i.e. the interface between the oxide barrier and the upper electrode in selected magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), in order to perform nuclear resonant scattering with the aim of obtaining direct information on the magnetic properties and quality of this interface. This is a unique approach as it makes use of this powerful technique to give information at the atomic level, and specifically from the interface where the sensor layer is deposited. By varying sample tunnel barrier thicknesses and oxidation times in the preparation of this barrier, we have observed that longer oxidation time results in not only an increase of the magnetic hyperfine fields, but also causes an interesting crystallization and smoothing of the interface. We also observed that boron atoms diffuse away from the lower part of the upper FeCoB electrode toward the capping layer. An important observation, which has a crucial effect in tunnel magnetoresistance values, is the absence of any magnetically dead FeO layer at the interface. Another finding is that the deposition of Fe on MgO is much smoother than the deposition of MgO on Fe.

  • Co/Pd (4)-Co-Pd-NiFe spring magnets with highly tunable and uniform magnetization tilt angles
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 324:22, s. 3929-3932
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By varying the Pd thickness (t(Pd)) from 0 to 8 nm in [Co/Pd](4)/Co/Pd(t(Pd))/NiFe exchange springs, we demonstrate (i) continuous tailoring of the exchange coupling between a [Co/Pd](4)/Co layer with perpendicular anisotropy, and a NiFe layer with an in-plane easy axis, (ii) tuning of the NiFe out-of-plane magnetization angle from 20 degrees to 80 degrees, and(iii) an up to two-fold increase in the NiFe damping. The partial decoupling also results in a highly uniform NiFe magnetization. These properties make [Co/Pd](4)/Co/Pd(t(Pd))/NiFe spring magnets ideal candidates for use as tilted polarizers, by combining stable and well-defined spin directions of its carriers with a high degree of angular freedom. • Depth-Dependent Magnetization Profiles of Hybrid Exchange Springs
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 2:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the magnetization depth profile of a hybrid exchange-spring system in which a Co/Pd multilayer with perpendicular anisotropy is coupled to a CoFeB thin film with in-plane anisotropy. The competition between these two orthogonal anisotropies promotes a strong depth dependence of the magnetization orientation. The angle of the magnetization vector is sensitive both to the strength of the individual anisotropies and to the local exchange constant and is thus tunable by changing the thickness of the CoFeB layer and by substituting Ni for Pd in one layer of the Co/Pd stack. The resulting magnetic depth profiles are directly probed by element-specific x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of the Fe and Ni layers located at different average depths. The experimental results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.
