    • We demonstrate 3.16 mu m periodic poling in RKTP using a coercive field grating induced by ion-exchange. The process results in a linear refractive index change over the sample thickness, adding extra tunability to the QPM device.

    • In range resolved differential absorption LIDAR for gas concentration measurement, an attractive solution would be mid-infrared (MIR) micro-pulse LIDAR with photon counting detection. Single-photon detection in MIR is, however, difficult because of the low photon energy. Both superconducting nanowire detectors and low bandgap APDs need cryogenic cooling and are still limited to wavelengths shorter than approximately 2.5 µm.

    • Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the mobility of domain walls in vapor-transport equilibrated stoichiometric LiTaO3. By using low-acceleration voltage, switching occurs solely for polarization pointing-up domains, resulting in fast domain-wall motion. When the incoming electron beam was more energetic with larger penetration depth, the switching instead occurred for polarization pointing down domains. Our results are discussed in terms of the interaction of the scanning electron beam with the polarization-screening charges at the crystal surface.

    • 8 mm long channel waveguides were manufactured in polycrystalline diamond with inductively coupled plasma etching and characterized in terms of mode-profile and propagation loss in the 1.5 - 3.4 mu m spectral region. As proof of principle, the waveguides were evaluated in an evanescent field sensing setup targeting the CH absorption peak of isopropanol at similar to 3.4 mu m, showing good agreement with numerical finite element simulations.     • An ion-exchange process has been developed for periodically poled Rb-dopedKTiOPO4(RKTP) which warrants high efficiency and low loss channel waveguides. The domainstability was investigated, and it was found that domain gratings with uncharged walls couldstand the ion-exchange process without deterioration. 3.1 mW of blue second harmonic lightwas generated from 74 mW of radiation at 940.2 nm coupled into an 8μm wide and 7 mm longwaveguide, corresponding to a normalized conversion efficiency of 115%/Wcm2. Waveguides inPPRKTP open the possibility for stable operation at high optical powers, as well as generatingentangled photons at low optical powers, and enable the investigation of novel nonlinear processessuch as counter-propagating interactions in a waveguide format.

    • Silicate fibers with internal electrodes are optically poled without a laser by side-exposure to radiation from a UV tubular lamp. Electrooptic coefficients χ(2) ~ 0.04 pm/V and Vπ = 810 V are obtained.

    • We investigate CO2 laser processing of SiGe-core glass fibers, and show that homogeneous, low optical loss cores can be made. Coaxial Ge-rich centers within the semiconductor cores can also be fabricated.
