  • General method for atomistic spin-lattice dynamics with first-principles accuracy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 99:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a computationally efficient and general first-principles based method for spin-lattice simulations for solids and clusters. The method is based on a coupling of atomistic spin dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, expressed through a spin-lattice Hamiltonian, where the bilinear magnetic term is expanded up to second order in displacement. The effect of first-order spin-lattice coupling on the magnon and phonon dispersion in bcc Fe is reported as an example, and we observe good agreement with previous simulations. We also illustrate the coupled spin-lattice dynamics method on a more conceptual level, by exploring dissipation-free spin and lattice motion of small magnetic clusters (a dimer, trimer, and tetramer). The method discussed here opens the door for a quantitative description and understanding of the microscopic origin of many fundamental phenomena of contemporary interest, such as ultrafast demagnetization, magnetocalorics, and spincaloritronics.

  • Self-organizing maps as a method for detecting phase transitions and phase identification
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 99:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Originating from image recognition, methods of machine learning allow for effective feature extraction and dimensionality reduction in multidimensional datasets, thereby providing an extraordinary tool to deal with classical and quantum models in many-body physics. In this study, we employ a specific unsupervised machine learning technique-self-organizing maps-to create a low-dimensional representation of microscopic states, relevant for macroscopic phase identification and detecting phase transitions. We explore the properties of spin Hamiltonians of two archetype model systems: a two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet and a three-dimensional crystal, Fe in the body-centered-cubic structure. The method of self-organizing maps, which is known to conserve connectivity of the initial dataset, is compared to the cumulant method theory and is shown to be as accurate while being computationally more efficient in determining a phase transition temperature. We argue that the method proposed here can be applied to explore a broad class of second-order phase-transition systems, not only magnetic systems but also, for example, order-disorder transitions in alloys.

  • Direct light–induced spin transfer between different elements in a spintronic Heusler material via femtosecond laser excitation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science. - 2375-2548. ; 6:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heusler compounds are exciting materials for future spintronics applications because they display a wide range of tunable electronic and magnetic interactions. Here, we use a femtosecond laser to directly transfer spin polarization from one element to another in a half-metallic Heusler material, Co2MnGe. This spin transfer initiates as soon as light is incident on the material, demonstrating spatial transfer of angular momentum between neighboring atomic sites on time scales < 10 fs. Using ultrafast high harmonic pulses to simultaneously and independently probe the magnetic state of two elements during laser excitation, we find that the magnetization of Co is enhanced, while that of Mn rapidly quenches. Density functional theory calculations show that the optical excitation directly transfers spin from one magnetic sublattice to another through preferred spin-polarized excitation pathways. This direct manipulation of spins via light provides a path toward spintronic devices that can operate on few-femtosecond or faster time scales.

  • Analysis of the linear relationship between asymmetry and magnetic moment at the M edge of 3d transition metals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - : American Physical Society. - 2643-1564. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magneto-optical response of Fe and Ni during ultrafast demagnetization is studied experimentally and theoretically. We have performed pump-probe experiments in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) geometry using photon energies that cover the M absorption edges of Fe and Ni between 40 and 72 eV. The magnetic asymmetry was obtained by forming the difference of reflected intensities obtained for two opposite orientations of the sample magnetization. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the magneto-optical response of different magnetic configurations, representing different types of excitations: long wavelength magnons, short wavelength magnons, and Stoner excitations. In the case of Fe, we find that the calculated asymmetry is strongly dependent on the specific type of magnetic excitation. Our modeling also reveals that during remagnetization Fe is, to a reasonable approximation, described by magnons, even though small nonlinear contributions could indicate some degree of Stoner excitations as well. In contrast, we find that the calculated asymmetry in Ni is rather insensitive to the type of magnetic excitations. However, there is a weak nonlinearity in the relation between asymmetry and the off-diagonal component of the dielectric tensor, which does not originate from the modifications of the electronic structure. Our experimental and theoretical results thus emphasize the need to consider a coupling between asymmetry and magnetization that may be more complex than a simple linear relationship. This insight is crucial for the microscopic interpretation of ultrafast magnetization experiments.

  • Measuring the Intra-Atomic Exchange Energy in Rare-Earth Adatoms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review X. - : American Physical Society. - 2160-3308. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first experimental determination of the intra-atomic exchange energy between the inner 4f and the outer 6s5d shells in rare-earth elements. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy on individual rare-earth atoms adsorbed on metal-supported graphene reveals an element-dependent excitation, with energy between 30 and 170 meV, linearly increasing with the spin angular momentum of the 4f shell. This observation is possible owing to the strong spin polarization of the outer shells, characteristic of rare-earth adatoms on graphene. This polarization gives rise to a giant magnetoresistance of up to 75% observed for Dy on graphene/Ir(111) single-atom magnets. Density functional theory calculations of the 6s5d shell spin polarizations and of their intra-atomic exchange constants with the 4f shell yield exchange energies in agreement with the experimental values. These results prove that the description of the spin dynamics in RE considering only the 4f - 5d interaction is oversimplified. A more realistic treatment requires us to consider a multishell intra-atomic exchange in which both 6s and 5d shells are taken into account, with the 4f - 6s contribution possibly prevailing over the 4f - 5d one. Our findings are important for the general understanding of magnetism in rare earths, whether they are in bulk compounds or as surface adsorbed atoms and clusters. The results presented here also push for a revision of the description of the spin dynamics in rare-earth-based systems.

  • Magnon-magnon entanglement and its quantification via a microwave cavity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 104:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantum magnonics is an emerging research field, with great potential for applications in magnon based hybrid systems and quantum information processing. Quantum correlation, such as entanglement, is a central resource in many quantum information protocols that naturally comes about in any study toward quantum technologies. This applies also to quantum magnonics. Here, we investigate antiferromagnetic coupling of two ferromagnetic sublattices that can have two different magnon modes. We show how this may lead to experimentally measurable bipartite continuous-variable magnon-magnon entanglement. The entanglement can be fully characterized via a single squeezing parameter or, equivalently, entanglement parameter. The clear relation between the entanglement parameter and the Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) function of the ground state opens up for experimental quantification magnon-magnon continuous-variable entanglement and EPR nonlocality. We propose a practical experimental realization to measure the EPR function of the ground state, in a setting that relies on magnon-photon interaction in a microwave cavity.

  • A majority gate with chiral magnetic solitons
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 30:37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In magnetic materials, nontrivial spin textures may emerge due to the competition among different types of magnetic interactions. Among such spin textures, chiral magnetic solitons represent topologically protected spin configurations with particle-like properties. Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that these chiral magnetic solitons are ideal to use for logical operations, and we demonstrate the functionality of a three- input majority gate, in which the input states can be controlled by applying an external electromagnetic field or spin-polarized currents. One of the main advantages of the proposed device is that the input and output signals are encoded in the chirality of solitons, that may be moved, allowing to perform logical operations using only minute electric currents. As an example we illustrate how the three input majority gate can be used to perform logical relations, such as Boolean AND and OR.

  • Investigation of the spectral properties and magnetism of BiFeO3 by dynamical mean-field theory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT), we have computed the valence-band photoelectron spectra and magnetic excitation spectra of BiFeO3, one of the most studied multiferroics. Within the DMFT approach, the local impurity problem is tackled by the exact diagonalization solver. The solution of the impurity problem within the LDA+DMFT method for the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases produces result in agreement with the experimental data on electronic and magnetic structures. For comparison, we also present results obtained by the LDA+U approach which is commonly used to compute the physical properties of this compound. Our LDA+DMFT derived electronic spectra match adequately with the experimental hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy for Fe 3d states, whereas the LDA+U method fails to capture the general features of the measured spectra. This indicates the importance of accurately incorporating the dynamical aspect of electronic correlation among Fe 3d orbitals to reproduce the experimental excitation spectra. Specifically, the LDA+DMFT derived density of states exhibits a significant amount of Fe 3d states at the position of Bi lone pairs, implying that the latter are not alone in the spectral scenario. This fact might modify our interpretation about the origin of ferroelectric polarization in this material. Our study demonstrates that the combination of orbital cross sections for the constituent elements and broadening schemes for the spectral functions are crucial to explain the detailed structures of the experimental electronic spectra. Our magnetic excitation spectra computed from the LDA+DMFT result conform well with the inelastic neutron scattering data.

  • Adiabatic spin dynamics and effective exchange interactions from constrained tight-binding electronic structure theory : Beyond the Heisenberg regime
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 105:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider an implementation of the adiabatic spin dynamics approach in a tight-binding description of the electronic structure. The adiabatic approximation for spin degrees of freedom assumes that the faster electronic degrees of freedom are always in a quasiequilibrium state, which significantly reduces the numerical complexity in comparison to the full electron dynamics. Noncollinear magnetic configurations are stabilized by a constraining field, which allows us to directly obtain the effective magnetic field from the negative of the constraining field. While the dynamics are shown to conserve energy, we demonstrate that adiabatic spin dynamics does not conserve the total spin angular momentum when the lengths of the magnetic moments are allowed to change, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we develop a method to extract an effective two-spin exchange interaction from the energy curvature tensor of noncollinear states, which we calculate at each time step of the numerical simulations. We demonstrate the effect of noncollinearity on this effective exchange and limitations due to multispin interactions in strongly noncollinear configurations beyond the regime where the Heisenberg model is valid. The relevance of the results are discussed with respect to experimental pump-probe experiments that follow the ultrafast dynamics of magnetism.

  • Hierarchy of magnon mode entanglement in antiferromagnets
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B Condensed Matter. - : American Physical Society. - 0163-1829 .- 1095-3795. ; 102:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous variable entanglement between magnon modes in Heisenberg antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is examined. Different bosonic modes are identified, which allows us to establish a hierarchy of magnon entanglement. We argue that entanglement between magnon modes is determined by a simple lattice-specific parameter, together with the ratio of the strengths of the DM and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and that magnon entanglement can be detected by means of quantum homodyne techniques. As an illustration of the relevance of our findings for possible entanglement experiments in the solid state, a typical antiferromagnet with the perovskite crystal structure is considered, and it is shown that long wave length magnon modes have a maximal degree of entanglement.
