  • Emergence of spin-orbit torques in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides: A status update
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Reviews. - : AIP Publishing. - 1931-9401. ; 7:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in two-dimensional (2D) materials has emerged as a powerful tool for designing spintronic devices. On the one hand, the interest in this respect for graphene, the most popular 2D material with numerous fascinating and exciting properties, is fading due to the absence of SOC. On the other hand, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to exhibit rich physics including large SOC. TMDs have been used for decades in a variety of applications such as nano-electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, sensing, and recently also in spintronics. Here, we review the current progress in research on 2D TMDs for generating spin-orbit torques in spin-logic devices. Several challenges connecting to thin film growth, film thickness, layer symmetry, and transport properties and their impact on the efficiency of spintronic devices are reviewed. How different TMDs generate spin-orbit torques in magnetic heterostructures is discussed in detail. Relevant aspects for improving the quality of the thin film growth as well as the efficiency of the generated spin-orbit torques are discussed together with future perspectives in the field of spin-orbitronics.

  • Intertwined magnetic sublattices in the double perovskite compound LaSrNiReO6
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 102:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a muon spin rotation (μ+SR) study of the magnetic properties of the double perovskite compound LaSrNiReO6. Using the unique length and time scales of the μ+SR technique, we successfully clarify the magnetic ground state of LaSrNiReO6, which was previously deemed as a spin glass state. Instead, our μ+SR results point toward a long-range dynamically ordered ground state below TC=23 K, for which a static limit is foreseen at T=0. Furthermore, between 23K250 K) state. Our results reveal how two separate yet intertwined magnetic lattices interact within the unique double perovskite structure and the importance of using complementary experimental techniques to obtain a complete understanding of the microscopic magnetic properties of complex materials.

  • Spin Current Generation in Magnetic Heterostructures and its Impact on Terahertz Emission : A Spin Dynamics Perspective
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The transfer of knowledge from one generation to another is key to the intellectualness of mankind. In the present information age, digital technology provides easy access to knowledge and information. However people across the globe simultaneously generate an enormous digital footprint, which demands to store and process the information in a modish way. Spin-based electronics is being considered a prospective candidate beyond complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology with several applications in data storage and data communication. The key concept of this technology is the generation, transportation, and detection of spin currents in magnetic heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) and non-ferromagnetic (NFM) bilayer thin films. In this thesis, I describe the concepts of spin dynamics at the nano- to femtosecond timescales and experimental techniques used to extract the spin dynamics properties of magnetic heterostructures. In this regard, we have shown that the Gilbert damping parameter and the number of quantum conductance channels (QCCs) can be enhanced by doping the FM layer with Re in the Ru/Fe65Co35/Ru heterostructure. The same heterostructure was used to evidence superdiffusive spin transport and a proximity induced magnetic moment in the Ru layer. It has also been shown that the number of QCCs can be enhanced by inserting a Cu layer at the interface between the FM and NFM layers in the Co2FeAl/β-Ta heterostructure where the Gilbert damping parameter of Co2FeAl depends on its chemical ordering. Further, we have found that the spin torque (SOT) efficiency in the 2D-transition metal dichalcogenide, 1T-TaS2, based heterostructure is one order larger as compared to Co2FeAl/β-Ta and Fe/Pd heterostructures. Moreover, it has been shown that crystalline quality and strain engineering can significantly impact the SOT efficiency and emission of terahertz radiation in Fe/Pd and Fe/Pt heterostructures, respectively. Finally, a full Heusler (Co2FeAl) based spintronic terahertz emitter is presented, which utilizes an optically induced spin current and the inverse spin Hall effect phenomenon. This thesis provides useful insights in the pathway towards power efficient spin logic devices.

  • Comparison of high temperature growth versus post-deposition in situ annealing in attaining very low Gilbert damping in sputtered Co2FeAl Heusler alloy films
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, a detail study on the effectiveness of high substrate temperature (TS) during deposition versus in situ annealing of the films at high temperature (TA) after sputtering at room-temperature is compared with an objective to obtain Heusler alloy thin films of Co2FeAl (CFA) having optimally low alpha int (with an upper bound of 1.75 & times; 10-3) and 12-17% smaller MS by employing ion beam sputtering technique and Si(100) as substrates for current induced magnetization switching application. In each of the two series of CFA films, prepared with different choice of TS and TA (lying in 300-773 K range) were explored for optimally tailoring their structural, static and dynamic magnetization properties. Structural study revealed that although all the CFA films were polycrystalline but the post-deposition annealed films were structurally optimal with higher density (6.36 +/- 0.09 g/cm3) and lower interface roughness (0.48 +/- 0.03 nm) compared to the CFA films grown at high TS (6.23 +/- 0.06 g/cm3, 0.61 +/- 0.01 nm). In plane field-angle dependent longitudinal magneto optical Kerr effect (LMOKE) study revealed the existence of a coupling between the weak uniaxial and biaxial magnetic anisotropies present in these films, attributed to the employed deposition geometry. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy measurements, performed in both the geometries - in-plane as well as out of plane, revealed a lowest value of 1.19 (+/- 0.08) & times; 10-3 of alpha int in the film post-annealed at 773 K. In addition, the observed non-linear relation between the alpha int and the dynamical 'g'-factor suggests that the contribution of spin orbit interaction to the damping is far less compared to the damping contribution from the DOS present near the Fermi level. It is remarkable to note that the as-grown CFA films sputtered at room temperature exhibited a record lowest value of 1.73 (+/- 0.09) & times; 10-3 of alpha int. Attainment of such small value of Gilbert damping and having moderate magnetization in high spin polarized Co2FeAl Heusler films sputtered on the Si (100) substrate opens up their great application potential in future spintronics devices.

  • Temperature-induced phase transition from cycloidal to collinear antiferromagnetism in multiferroic Bi0.9Sm0.1FeO3 driven by f-d induced magnetic anisotropy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 95:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In multiferroic BiFeO3 a cycloidal antiferromagnetic structure is coupled to a large electric polarization at room temperature, giving rise to magnetoelectric functionality that may be exploited in novel multiferroic-based devices. In this paper, we demonstrate that substituting samarium for 10% of the bismuth ions increases the periodicity of the room-temperature cycloid, and upon cooling to below similar to 15 K the magnetic structure tends towards a simple G-type antiferromagnet, which is fully established at 1.5 K. We show that this transition results from f-d exchange coupling, which induces a local anisotropy on the iron magnetic moments that destroys the cycloidal order-a result of general significance regarding the stability of noncollinear magnetic structures in the presence of multiple magnetic sublattices.

  • Magnetic properties of Ruddlesden-Popper phases Sr 3 − x Y x ( Fe 1.25 Ni 0.75 ) O 7 − δ : A combined experimental and theoretical investigation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - 2475-9953. ; 2:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of Sr3-xYx(Fe1.25Ni0.75)O-7(-delta )(0 <= x <= 0.75). Experimentally, the magnetic properties are investigated using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). This is complemented by a theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as the Heisenberg exchange parameters. Experimental results show an increase in the Ned temperature (T-N) with an increase of Y concentrations and O occupancy. The NPD data reveal that all samples are antiferromagnetically ordered at low temperatures, which has been confirmed by our theoretical simulations for the selected samples. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the three-dimensional magnetic order is stabilized due to finite interlayer exchange couplings. The latter give rise to finite interlayer spin-spin correlations, which disappear above T-N.

  • Strong In-Plane Magnetization and Spin Polarization in (Co0.15Fe0.85)5GeTe2/Graphen e van der Waals Heterostructure Spin-Valve at Room Temperature
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 18:7, s. 5240-5248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Van der Waals (vdW) magnets are promising, because of their tunable magnetic properties with doping or alloy composition, where the strength of magnetic interactions, their symmetry, and magnetic anisotropy can be tuned according to the desired application. However, so far, most of the vdW magnet-based spintronic devices have been limited to cryogenic temperatures with magnetic anisotropies favoring out-of-plane or canted orientation of the magnetization. Here, we report beyond room-temperature lateral spin-valve devices with strong in-plane magnetization and spin polarization of the vdW ferromagnet (Co0.15Fe0.85)5GeTe2 (CFGT) in heterostructures with graphene. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the magnitude of the anisotropy depends on the Co concentration and is caused by the substitution of Co in the outermost Fe layer. Magnetization measurements reveal the above room-temperature ferromagnetism in CFGT and clear remanence at room temperature. Heterostructures consisting of CFGT nanolayers and graphene were used to experimentally realize basic building blocks for spin valve devices, such as efficient spin injection and detection. Further analysis of spin transport and Hanle spin precession measurements reveals a strong in-plane magnetization with negative spin polarization at the interface with graphene, which is supported by the calculated spin-polarized density of states of CFGT. The in-plane magnetization of CFGT at room temperature proves its usefulness in graphene lateral spin-valve devices, thus revealing its potential application in spintronic technologies.

  • Influence of the magnetic sublattices in the double perovskite LaCaNiReO6
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 106:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and timescales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation, and resonance (μ+SR) microscopic technique and bulk ac/dc magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO6 double perovskite. As a result, we are able to discern and report ferrimagnetic ordering below TC=102K and the formation of different magnetic domains above TC. Between TC270K. An evolution of the interaction between Ni and Re magnetic sublattices, in this geometrically frustrated fcc perovskite structure, is revealed as a function of temperature through the critical behavior and thermal evolution of microscopic and macroscopic physical quantities.

  • A Room-Temperature Spin-Valve with van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe 5 GeTe 2 /Graphene Heterostructure
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 35:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discovery of van der Waals (vdW) magnets opened a new paradigm for condensed matter physics and spintronic technologies. However, the operations of active spintronic devices with vdW ferromagnets are limited to cryogenic temperatures, inhibiting their broader practical applications. Here, the robust room-temperature operation of lateral spin-valve devices using the vdW itinerant ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 in heterostructures with graphene is demonstrated. The room-temperature spintronic properties of Fe5GeTe2 are measured at the interface with graphene with a negative spin polarization. Lateral spin-valve and spin-precession measurements provide unique insights by probing the Fe5GeTe2/graphene interface spintronic properties via spin-dynamics measurements, revealing multidirectional spin polarization. Density functional theory calculations in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulations reveal significantly canted Fe magnetic moments in Fe5GeTe2 along with the presence of negative spin polarization at the Fe5GeTe2/graphene interface. These findings open opportunities for vdW interface design and applications of vdW-magnet-based spintronic devices at ambient temperatures.

  • Effect of seed layers on dynamic and static magnetic properties of Fe65Co35 thin films
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 51:30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe65Co35 thin films have been deposited on SiO2 substrates using sputtering technique with different choices of seed layer; Ru, Ni82.5Fe17.5, Rh, Y and Zr. Best soft magnetic properties were observed with seed layers of Ru, Ni82.5Fe17.5 and Rh. Adding these seed layers, the coercivity of the Fe65Co35 films decreased to values of around 1.5 mT, which can be compared to the value of 12.5 mT obtained for films deposited without seed layer. Further investigations were performed on samples with these three seed layers in terms of dynamic magnetic properties, both on as prepared and annealed samples, using constant frequency cavity and broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Damping parameters of around 8.0X10-3 and 4.5X10-3 were obtained from in-plane and out-of-plane measurements, respectively, for as prepared samples, values that were reduced to 6.5X10-3 and 4.0X10-3 for annealed samples.
