  • Neutron reflectometry on highly absorbing films and its application to (B4C)-B-10-based neutron detectors
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Royal Society of London. Proceedings A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1364-5021 .- 1471-2946. ; 472:2185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron reflectometry is a powerful tool used for studies of surfaces and interfaces. The absorption in the typical studied materials is neglected and this technique is limited only to the reflectivity measurement. For strongly absorbing nuclei, the absorption can be directly measured by using the neutron-induced fluorescence technique which exploits the prompt particle emission of absorbing isotopes. This technique is emerging from soft matter and biology where highly absorbing nuclei, in very small quantities, are used as a label for buried layers. Nowadays, the importance of absorbing layers is rapidly increasing, partially because of their application in neutron detection; a field that has become more active also due to the He-3-shortage. We extend the neutron-induced fluorescence technique to the study of layers of highly absorbing materials, in particular (B4C)-B-10. The theory of neutron reflectometry is a commonly studied topic; however, when a strong absorption is present the subtle relationship between the reflection and the absorption of neutrons is not widely known. The theory for a general stack of absorbing layers has been developed and compared to measurements. We also report on the requirements that a (B4C)-B-10 layer must fulfil in order to be employed as a converter in neutron detection.

  • Reduced photoluminescence from InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structures following 40 MeV iodine ion irradiation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physica. B, Condensed matter. - : Elsevier. - 0921-4526 .- 1873-2135. ; 404:23-24, s. 4925-4928
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects following ion irradiation of GaN-based devices are still limited. Here we present data on the photoluminescence (PL) emitted from InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) structures, which have been exposed to 40 MeV I ion irradiation. The PL is reduced as a function of applied ion fluence, with essentially no PL signal left above 1011 ions/cm2. It is observed that even the ion fluences in the 109 ions/cm2 range have a pronounced effect on the photoluminescence properties of the MQW structures. This may have consequences concerning application of InGaN/GaN MQW’s in radiation-rich environments, in addition to defect build-up during ion beam analysis.

  • Formation of surface nanostructures on rutile (TiO2): comparative study of low-energy cluster ion and high-energy monoatomic ion impact
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 42:20, s. 205303-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of nanostructures on rutile (TiO2) surfaces formed after the implantation of kiloelectronvolt-energy Ar+n cluster ions and megaelectronvolt- to gigaelectronvolt-energy multiply charged heavy ions (Iq+, Taq+ and Uq+) is studied. Despite the differences in stopping and energy transfer mechanisms between the kiloelectronvolt-energy cluster ions and megaelectronvolt-energy monoatomic ions, their impacts lead to a similar type of surface damage, namely craters. For the cluster ion implantation the craters are caused by the multiple-collision effect (dominated by nuclear stopping) and the high density of energy and momentum transferred to the target, while for the case of megaelectronvolt multiply charged ions the craters are probably formed due to the Coulomb explosion and fast energy transfer caused by the electronic stopping. At ion energies in the gigaelectronvolt range, nanosize protrusions, so-called hillocks, are observed on the surface. It is suggested that electronic stopping leads to the formation of continuous tracks and the transferred energy is high enough to melt the material along the whole projectile path. Elastic rebound of the tension between the molten and solid state phases leads to liquid flow, expansion and quenching of the melt, thus forming the hillocks. Atomic force microscopy measurements carried out under different environmental conditions (temperature and atmosphere) suggest that the damaged material at the nanosize impact spots has very different water affinity properties (higher hydrophilicity or water adsorption) compared with the non-irradiated rutile surface.

  • Stability of (B4C)-B-10 thin films under neutron radiation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Radiation Physics and Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-806X .- 1879-0895. ; 113, s. 14-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin films of (B4C)-B-10 have shown to be very suitable as neutron-converting material in the next generation of neutron detectors, replacing the previous predominantly used He-3. In this contribution we show under realistic conditions that (B4C)-B-10 films are not damaged by the neutron irradiation and interactions, which they will be exposed to under many years in a neutron detector. 1 mu m thick (B4C)-B-10 thin films were deposited onto Al or Si substrates using dc magnetron sputtering. As-deposited films were exposed to a cold neutron beam with fluences of up to 1.1 x 10(14) cm(-2) and a mean wavelength of 6.9 angstrom. Both irradiated and as-deposited reference samples were characterized with time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. We show that only 1.8 ppm of the B-10 atoms were consumed and that the film composition does not change by the neutron interaction within the measurement accuracy. The irradiation does not deteriorate the film adhesion and there is no indication that it results in increased residual stress values of the as-deposited films of 0.095 GPa. From what is visible with the naked eye and down to atomic level studies, no change from the irradiation could be found using the above-mentioned characterization techniques. (C) 2015 The Authors. • Localised modifications of anatase TiO2 thin films by a Focused Ion Beam
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X .- 1872-9584. ; 268:19, s. 3142-3146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Focused Ion Beam (FIB) has been used to implant micrometer-sized areas of polycrystalline anatase TiO2 thin films with Ga+ ions using fluencies from 10(15) to 10(17) ions/cm(2). The evolution of the surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the chemical modifications of the surface were followed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The implanted areas show a noticeable change in surface morphology as compared to the as-deposited surface. The surface loses its grainy morphology to gradually become a smooth surface with a RMS roughness of less than 1 nm for the highest ion fluence used. The surface recession or depth of the irradiated area increases with ion fluence, but the rate with which the depth increases changes at around 5 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). Comparison with implantation of a pre-irradiated surface indicates that the initial surface morphology may have a large effect on the surface recession rate. Detailed analysis of the XPS spectra shows that the oxidation state of Ti and O apparently does not change, whereas the implanted gallium exists in an oxidation state related to Ga2O3.

  • Localized 56Fe+ ion implantation of TiO2 using anodic porous alumina
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ion Beams and Nano-Engineering. - Warrendale, PA, USA : Materials Research Society. - 9781605111544 ; , s. 3-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present result following localized ion implantation of rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) using anodic porous alumina as a mask. The implantation were performed with 100 keV 56Fe+ ions using a fluence of 1.3·1016 ions/cm2. The surface modifications where studied by means of SEM, AFM/MFM and XRD. A well-defined hexagonal pattern of modified material in the near surface structure is observed. Local examination of the implanted areas revealed no clear magnetic signal. However, a variation in mechanical and electrostatic behavior between implanted and non-implanted zones is inferred from the variation in AFM signals.

  • Continuous and Localized Mn Implantation of ZnO
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: NANOSCALE RESEARCH LETTERS. - New York : Springer. - 1931-7573 .- 1556-276X. ; 4:8, s. 878-887
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results derived from continuous and localized 35 keV Mn-55(+) ion implantations into ZnO. Localized implantations were carried out by using self-ordered alumina membranes as masks leading to ordered arrays of implanted volumes on the substrate surfaces. Defects and vacancies in the small implantation volumes of ZnO were generated due to the implantation processes besides the creation of new phases. Rapid thermal annealing was applied in the case of continuous implantation. The samples were characterized by HRSEM, GIXRD, Raman spectroscopy and RBS/C. Magnetic characterization of the samples pointed out appreciable differences among the samples obtained by the different implantation methods. This fact was mainly attributed to the different volume/surface ratios present in the implanted zones as well as to the increase of Mn atom concentrations along the grain frontiers in the nanostructured surfaces. The samples also showed a ferromagnetic transition phase at temperature value higher than room temperature.

  • A high-efficiency thermal neutron detector based on thin 3D (B4C)-B-10 converters for high-rate applications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 123:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • new position-sensitive thermal neutron detector based on boron-coated converters has been developed as an alternative to today's standard He-3-based technology for application to thermal neutron scattering. The key element of the development is a novel 3D (B4C)-B-10 converter which has been ad hoc designed and realized with the aim of combining a high neutron conversion probability via the B-10(n, alpha)(7) Li reaction together with an efficient collection of the produced charged particles. The developed 3D converter is composed of thin aluminium grids made by a micro-waterjet technique and coated on both sides with a thin layer of( 10)B(4)C. When coupled to a GEM detector this converter allows reaching neutron detection efficiencies close to 50% at neutron wavelengths equal to 4 angstrom. In addition, the new detector features a spatial resolution of about 5 min and can sustain counting rates well in excess of 1 MHz/cm(2). The newly developed neutron detector will enable time-resolved measurements of different kind of samples in neutron scattering experiments at high flux spallation sources and can find a use in applications where large areas and custom geometries of thermal neutron detectors are foreseen.

  • Neutron reflectometry with the Multi-Blade B-10-based detector
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1364-5021 .- 1471-2946. ; 474:2216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Multi-Blade is a boron-10-based gaseous detector developed for neutron reflectometry instruments at the European Spallation Source in Sweden. The main challenges for neutron reflectometry detectors are the instantaneous counting rate and spatial resolution. The Multi-Blade has been tested on the CRISP reflectometer at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in the UK. A campaign of scientific measurements has been performed to study the Multi-Blade response in real instrumental conditions. The results of these tests are discussed in this paper.

  • The Multi-Blade Boron-10-based neutron detector performance using a focusing reflectometer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 15:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Multi-Blade is a Boron-10-based neutron detector designed for neutron reflectometers and developed for the two instruments (Estia and FREIA) planned for the European Spallation Source in Sweden. A demonstrator has been installed at the AMOR reflectometer at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI - Switzerland). AMOR exploits the Selene guide concept and can be considered a scaled-down demonstrator of Estia. The results of these tests are discussed. It will be shown how the characteristics of the Multi-Blade detector are features that allow the focusing reflectometry operation mode. Additionally the performance of the Multi-Blade, in terms of rate capability, exceeds current state-of-the-art technology. The improvements with respect to the previous prototypes are also highlighted; from background considerations to the linear and angular uniformity response of the detector.
