  • The Ab Initio No-core Shell Model

    • This contribution reviews a number of applications of the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) within nuclear physics and beyond. We will highlight a nuclear-structure study of the A = 12 isobar using a chiral NN + 3NF interaction. In the spirit of this workshop we will also mention the new development of the NCSM formalism to describe open channels and to approach the problem of nuclear reactions. Finally, we will illustrate the universality of the many-body problem by presenting the recent adaptation of the NCSM effective-interaction approach to study the many-boson problem in an external trapping potential with short-range interactions.This article is based on the presentation by C. Forssén at the Fifth Workshop on Critical Stability, Erice, Sicily.

  • Novel Scintillation Detectors for Prompt Fission γ-Ray Measurements

    • In this work we present first results from measurements of prompt fission γ-rays from the spontaneous fission in 252Cf. New and accurate data on corresponding γ-rays from the reactions 235U(nth,f) and 239Pu(nth,f) are highly demanded for the modeling of new Generation-IV nuclear reactor systems. For these experiments we employed scintillation detectors made out of new materials (LaBr3, LaCl3 and CeBr3), whose properties were necessary to know in order to obtain reliable results. Hence, we have characterized these detectors. In all the important properties these detectors outshine sodium-iodine detectors that where used in the 1970s, when the existing data had been acquired. Our finding is that the new generation of scintillation detectors is indeed promising, as far as an improved precision of the demanded data is concerned.

  • NA61/SHINE online noise filtering using machine learning methods

    • The NA61/SHINE is a high-energy physics experiment operating at the SPS accelerator at CERN. The physics program of the experiment was recently extended, requiring a significant upgrade of the detector setup. The main goal of the upgrade is to increase the event flow rate from 80Hz to 1kHz by exchanging the read-out electronics of the NA61/SHINE main tracking detectors (Time-Projection-Chambers - TPCs). As the amount of collected data will increase significantly, a tool for online noise filtering is needed. The standard method is based on the reconstruction of tracks and removal of clusters which do not belong to any particle trajectory. However, this method takes a substantial amount of time and resources. A novel approach based on machine learning methods is presented in this proceedings.

  • Runaway electron modelling in the EU-IM framework

    • The Runaway Electron Test Workflow was used to study the behaviour of the Dreicer generation of runaway electrons in dynamic scenarios to find a parameter which can be used to determine the need of kinetic modelling in more complex simulations. It was found that for processes which vary faster than the collision time at the critical velocity for runaway electron generation, kinetic modelling is advised to capture potential kinetic effects. A more complex tool, the ETS have been used to simulate a self-consistent thermal quench induced by massive material injection with promising initial results. Development of ETS capabilities continues with introduction of kinetic modelling and moving onto the new ETS6 versions.

    • Cross-correlations of VCSEL transverse mode groups with different apertures are used to predict dispersion dependent RIN. Experiments with wideband multimode fiber confirm the noise enhancement dependence on aperture, which increases with fewer mode VCSELs.

    • A prototype CEPA4, made of four optically isolated phoswich-crystals of LaBr3(Ce)+LaCl3(Ce) packed together in one can of Al, was tested with high energy protons (70-230 MeV) at the cyclotron of Krakow. Further, the response to different gamma radiation standard sources and cosmic muons was determined. Shape analysis of the pulses derived from the four individually coupled PM-tubes was performed and were used as input functions for Monte Carlo simulations in order to simulate the efficiencies and resolutions of a final detector design consisting of 750 such phoswich crystals arranged in a cylindrical disc. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

    • A sophisticated design of 750 LaBr3(Ce):LaCl3(Ce) phoswich crystals (CEPA10) with a segmentation determined by the Doppler correction and an energy resolution of 5% at 1 MeV is presented. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for high energy protons (50–500 MeV) and gamma radiation (0.5–30 MeV) to determine the length and shape of the crystals for optimum performance of the detector. In the case of protons, the two-layer detector can be used as a ΔELaBr3 − ETot telescope or, for very high energies, as a double energy loss detector (ΔELaBr3 + ΔELaCl3), in order to determine the initial energy. In addition, an experimental test with high energy protons (70–230 MeV) was performed at the cyclotron center in Krakow, Poland with a first prototype of 2 x 2 phoswich rectangular crystals (CEPA4) packed in an aluminum can (0.5 mm case). To simulate CEPA10 efficiencies and resolutions, optical pulses detected in CEPA4 by photomultiplier tubes with a DAQ system were used as energy input functions in Monte Carlo simulations.

    • At the superconducting 130 MeV Darmstadt electron linac S-DALINAC a new source of spin-polarized electrons using a GaAs cathode has been installed, opening the path for experiments with polarized electron and photon beams for nuclear structure studies at low momentum transfers, e.g., the search for forward-backward asymmetries originating from parity non-conservation (PNC) in the photon-induced fission process of 238U.Detailed studies of different properties, e.g., the energy dependence of fission modes, the population of fission isomers, or the search for (PNC) effects in the photon-induced fission process of 238U, depends on high quality data, therefore needing high luminosities. An active gas target containing uranium may overcome the problem that large solid target thicknesses cause poor energy and angular resolution.A single Frisch-grid ionization chamber has been built to test a mixture of standard counting gases (e.g., argon) with depleted uraniumhexafiliguoride (238UF6) using a triple alpha source, evaluating signal quality and drift velocity. For mass fractions up to 2 percent of 238U in the counting gas. The drift velocity increases with rising UF6 content, while a good signal quality and energy resolution is preserved.

  • Coulomb breakup of 17Ne from the viewpoint of nuclear astrophysics

    • By the Coulomb breakup of 17Ne, the time-reversed reaction 15O(2p,γ)17Ne has been studied. This reaction might play an important role in the rp process, as a break-out reaction of the hot CNO cycle. The secondary 17Ne ion beam with an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon has been dissociated in a Pb target. The reaction products have been detected with the LAND-R3B experimental setup at GSI. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb dissociation cross section sCoul has been determined, which then will be converted into a photo-absorption cross section sphoto, and a two-proton radiative capture cross section σcap. Additionally, information about the structure of the 17Ne, a potential two-proton halo nucleus, will be received.
