Automatic generation of the axial lines of urban environments to capture what we perceive

- Based on the concepts of isovists and medial axes, we developed a set of algorithms that can automatically generate axial lines for representing individual linearly stretched parts of open space of an urban environment. Open space is the space between buildings, where people can freely move around. The generation of the axial lines has been a key aspect of space syntax research, conventionally relying on hand-drawn axial lines of an urban environment, often called axial map, for urban morphological analysis. Although various attempts have been made towards an automatic solution, few of them can produce the axial map that consists of the least number of longest visibility lines, and none of them really works for different urban environments. Our algorithms provide a better solution than existing ones. Throughout this paper, we have also argued and demonstrated that the axial lines constitute a true skeleton, superior to medial axes, in capturing what we perceive about the urban environment.

Computing the fewest-turn map directions based on the connectivity of natural roads

- In this paper, we introduced a novel approach to computing the fewest-turn map directions or routes based on the concept of natural roads. Natural roads are joined road segments that perceptually constitute good continuity. This approach relies on the connectivity of natural roads rather than that of road segments for computing routes or map directions. Because of this, the derived routes posses the fewest turns. However, what we intend to achieve are the routes that not only possess the fewest turns, but are also as short as possible. This kind of map direction is more effective and favorable by people, because they bear less cognitive burden. Furthermore, the computation of the routes is more efficient, since it is based on the graph encoding the connectivity of roads, which is significantly smaller than the graph of road segments. We made experiments applied to eight urban street networks from North America and Europe in order to illustrate the above stated advantages. The experimental results indicate that the fewest-turn routes posses fewer turns and shorter distances than the simplest paths and the routes provided by Google Maps. For example, the fewest-turn-and-shortest routes are on average 15% shorter than the routes suggested by Google Maps, while the number of turns is just half as much. This approach is a key technology behind FromToMap.org - a web mapping service using openstreetmap data.

Transformational knowledge practices in social-ecological systems

- Climate change and poverty alleviation are examples of interconnected challenges propelling changes across environmental, social, cultural and political spheres. Interconnected challenges are characterized by multiple causality, feedback loops, non-linear dynamics. Transformations, as fundamental reconfigurations of social-ecological relations, are increasingly proposed as a strategy for tackling interconnected challenges. Transformations seem to require a move towards diverse, integrated, imaginative, anticipatory, dynamic forms of knowledge making. Although new forms of knowledge creation are indeed emerging in sustainability science and practice, this area of studies is yet to yield a coherent research framework for analyzing the contribution of these practices to transformations in social-ecological systems. The central aim of this thesis is to a) provide a theoretical framework and b) to explore and assess feasibility and effectiveness of concrete knowledge practices that could help governance actors to move towards forms of deliberate transformations in the face of interconnected challenges. Two empirical research papers based on a case-study in Coastal Kenya are presented. In these papers we approached the interconnected challenges of social-ecological trade-offs by engaging multiple knowledge practices (ranging from dialogue, to narrative scenarios, participatory modelling and ecological modelling) to create a space for imagination and deliberation amongst governance actors and scientists. Assessment of this process was performed with a mixed methods research design, including interviews, surveys, and participant observation. Results suggest that overall, these knowledge practices supported: a) development of systemic and collaborative mindsets (Paper 1); b) revision of core assumptions (Paper 1); c) the identification of key cross-scale tradeoffs that were previously not considered by governance actors (Paper 2). These results highlight the potential of these knowledge practices in fostering knowledge relevant for re-imagination and reconfiguration of social-ecological systems. I conclude by proposing that transformational knowledge practices present at least four key elements in that they are: plural and coproduced, affect change across scales, involve multiple ways of knowing and foster imagination.

- Arktiska spår: Natur och kultur är en mångvetenskaplig antologi om förändringsprocesser i världens mest nordliga delar. Samtidigt är det en rikt illustrerad, närmast bilddriven, publikation som ger fördjupning kring en utställning: Arktis - medan isen smälter (Nordiska museet 2019-20). I boken medverkar över fyrtio skribenter från olika fakulteter och även konstnärer och andra experter. De längre artiklarna har genomgått granskning av extern läsare, i samverkan med Journal of Northern Studies. Huvudteman som blir belysta ur olika ämnens perspektiv är Arktis som tid och rum, Isens dynamik (ur maringeologiskt djuptidsperspektiv) och historisk antropologi samt Arktis som resurslandskap. Nordiska museets och andra museers samlingar dras in i den mångvetenskapliga undersökningen av spår och rörelser, i ett antal korta essäer om föremål och arkivalier.

- En värld bestämd av ett fåtal urämnen – jord, vatten, eld och luft? Med idén om de fyra elementen förklarade antikens människa ett kosmos styrt av gudarnas nyckfullhet. En kosmologisk väv som senare separerades i sinnligt och andligt, fysiskt och metafysiskt. Hur påverkar eld och människors föreställningar om eld verkligheten idag? Från rening, passion och kärlekens låga till förstörelse, offerriter och transformation. Människors föreställningar om eld är många. I mytologin brinner Fågel Fenix upp och återföds ur egen aska, och Prometheus stjäl gudarnas eld och ger till människorna som i sin tur får kunskap och makt. Människor värmer sig och bränner sig genom historien, från att laga mat över elden till att smälta metaller till vapen, från egna eldstäder till svårsläckta bränder i klimatförändringarnas tid. Följ med på en eldexkursion från idéernas historia till vetenskapens och konstens samtid.Duo Granmo/Berg utforskar begreppet eld utifrån det musikaliska perspektivet samt diskuterar och samtalar med en inbjuden skara specialister från olika områden.

New applications of 3D modeling in artefact analysis : three case studies in Viking Age brooches

- Three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning is a nondestructive and versatile technique that provides archaeologists with 3D models of archaeological and ethnographic objects. We have previously shown that 3D models facilitate shape analysis of archaeological bones and stone tools, due to the high measurement accuracy inherent in the latest generation of 3D laser scanners. Here, we explore the utility of 3D modeling as a tool for analyzing Viking Age metal artefacts with complex morphologies. Four highly ornate Viking Age brooches from Scandinavia and Russia were digitized with a portable laser scanner, and the resulting 3D models were used in three case studies of (a) artefact reconstruction, (b) tool mark analysis, and (c) motif documentation. The results revealed both strengths and limitations of the employed techniques. 3D modeling proved to be very well suited for artefact reconstruction and was helpful also in the stylistic and motif analysis. The tool mark analysis was only partially successful, due to the resolution limits of the laser scanner used. 3D-based motif analysis of a grandiose Scandinavian-style brooch from Yelets, Russia, identified an anthropomorphic figure with a bird-like body that previously has been overlooked. This figure may be a Rurikid coat of arms, possibly linking the object to a princely household and providing further evidence for a connection between Scandinavia and the Rurikids. As 3D technology keeps improving, we expect that additional applications for 3D modeling in archaeology will be developed, likely leading to many new findings when old objects are re-analyzed with modern techniques. However, our results indicate that 3D modeling cannot completely replace traditional artefact analysis—instead, we argue that the two approaches are best used in combination.

- Scandinavia is famous for its long summer days, the liminal time bridging sunny brightness with dark nights. DUSK then is the threshold, known for creating an atmosphere of calm openness, curiosity and exploration. We, the inviting actors are a collaboration in between ‘Skovhaven i byen’ / ‘Forest garden in the city’ with its anchoring in Copenhagen, the mobile exploratory household ‘Holding Surplus House’ featuring a research-based Tiny House on Wheels (THoW), the international multispecies collective ‘I.N.S.E.C.T’, and the ‘Living Textiles Collective’. We invite curious participants – no matter whether you’re already part of the Design and Posthumanism network – to gather for a string of sensory co-creative events: a ForestGardenSalon with conversations about urban biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics, Sensory Tours in which we guide visitors through the ForestGarden in mindful discovery, including sensory observations, meditation and creative expressions, a screening of the I.N.S.E.C.T. Summercamp 2022 Documentary film, an exhibition of artefacts/works from the contributors that showcase multispecies relations, a workshop to make seasonal clothing for the Tiny House on Wheels itself and its inhabitants. One such making will be that of insulation panels that can host seeds and insects. This will be the time and place to explore an ecosystemic approach to life-sustaining co-living that strives to, as indicated through the UIA motto, “leave no one behind”. In this case it includes an invitation to multispecies wellbeing for flourishing biodiversity.

- Arbetet med Videobutiken (se https://gupea.ub.gu.se/handle/2077/28345) ställdes ut på en samlingsutställning Canvassing kurerad av Kalle Brolin och Kristina Muntzig. Ifråga om Videobutiken visades en rad, bilder, utsnitt, texter och citat vilka tillsammans utgjorde en form av porträtt av arbetet i stort, i form av färgutskrifter i A4-format vilka satt fritt nålade på en gemensam vägg. Bredvid väggen stod ett bord med en stol där en “karta” över “väggen” var uppritad och där det var möjligt att läsa sig till källor och ursprung för texter och bilder.

- En geopark är ett område med geologi av internationell betydelse – alltså något som är unikt i världen. Inom geoparken arbetar vi aktivt för att sprida kunskap om geologi och sambanden mellan geologi, biologi och kulturhistoria till barn och unga. Platåbergens Geopark är ett samverkansprojekt mellan de nio kommunerna Trollhättan, Vänersborg, Grästorp, Lidköping, Skara, Götene, Mariestad, Skövde och Falköping. Grästorps kommun är projektägare. Under hösten 2019 lämnas en ansökan in till Unesco, om att bli en Unesco Global Geopark. Serietidningen Trollberg är ett samarbete mellan Platåbergens Geopark och projektet KASTiS – Kulturarv och spelteknologi i Skaraborg. KASTiS finansieras av Skaraborgs kommunalförbund och Högskolan i Skövde. Med den här serietidningen vill vi skapa nyfikenhet kring geologi och särskilt då för platser som finns inom Platåbergens Geopark.
