  • Performance of lightning locating systems in extracting lightning flash characteristics
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-6826 .- 1879-1824. ; 112, s. 31-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study was carried out to compare the negative cloud to ground lightning discharges recorded using Swedish lightning locating system against time correlated direct field measurements. Only the first 200 ms time window was investigated. A total of 167 flashes were recorded and time matched against the lightning locating system records. The comparison shows that for negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes, the stroke detection efficiency of lightning locating system is at 93% for detecting the first stroke accurately. The efficiency drops to about 77% in detecting all strokes accurately. Thus, the system tends to give a low value for average multiplicity and a significantly higher value for parameters such as percentage of single stroke flashes. In agreement with the direct field measurements, when the individual strokes are identified correctly, both systems show the expected 2:1 ratio between the first and subsequent stroke peak field. Data also shows that the LLS system has a tendency of identifying isolated cloud pulses as positive return strokes. Hence one must take into account the systematic deficiency in lightning locating systems when reporting characteristics of cloud to ground lightning flashes.

  • On the velocity of positive connecting leaders associated with negative downward lightning leaders
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 35:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A self-consistent leader propagation model is used to estimate the velocity of upward connecting positive leaders initiated from a tall tower under the influence of downward negative lightning leaders. The propagation of upward connecting leaders has been found to be influenced not only by the average velocity of the downward leader but also by the prospective return stroke current, the lateral position of the downward leader channel as well as by the ambient electric field. This result show that the velocity and propagation time of upward connecting positive leaders change from flash to flash due to the variations in these parameters.

  • Effect of the space charge layer created by corona at ground level on the inception of upward lightning leaders from tall towers
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 112:D12, s. D12205-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric field measurements above ground have shown that the space charge layer created by corona at ground level shields the background electric field produced by the thundercloud. Therefore it is expected that this space charge layer can also influence the conditions required to initiate upward lightning from tall objects. For this reason, a numerical model that describes the evolution of the main electrical parameters below a thunderstorm is used to compute the space charge layer development. The time variation of the electric field measured at 600 m above ground during the 1989 rocket triggered lightning experiment at the Kennedy Space Center (Florida) is used to drive the model. The obtained space charge density profiles are used to compute the conditions required to initiate stable upward lightning positive leaders from tall towers. Corona at the tip of the tower is neglected. It is found that the space charge layer significantly affects the critical thundercloud electric fields required to initiate upward lightning leaders from tall objects. The neutral aerosol particle concentration is observed to have a significant influence on the space charge density profiles and the critical thundercloud electric fields, whereas the corona current density does not considerably affect the results for the cases considered in the analysis. It is found that a lower thundercloud electric field is required to trigger a lightning flash from a tall tower or other tall slender grounded structure in the case of sites with a high neutral aerosol particle concentration, like polluted areas or coastal regions.

  • Single-station narrowband ranging of active storm cells without lightning-type discrimination
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-6826 .- 1879-1824. ; 71:8-9, s. 911-922
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a statistical technique for ranging the edges of active storms cell using a very simple narrowband receiver tuned to 1 MHz (the MW band in radio, just below HF frequencies). We show that a principle based on the "30-30 rule" can be used to define practical warning levels. From the measurements carried out in Finland, we show that the narrowband source intensities of cloud-to-ground lightning vary log-normally; this results in a ranging uncertainty of about 20%, which can be reduced if a suitable floating average is used. Based on one storm, we suggest that the differences between intra-cloud and ground-to-cloud signals at 1 MHz are small enough to make an IC-CG discrimination. Eliminating such a discrimination allows all lightning impulses to be used in the range and improves the accuracy, since more flashes are then available as inputs into the distance-estimation algorithm. Although the system is only validated against a single storm, we provide definitions by which this and other narrowband detectors could be independently verified; existing narrowband devices have not been verified in this manner, due in part to a lack of such standardized definitions.

  • Audible Frequency Analysis of Ground Flashes
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thunder signatures categorized into three types based on peak pressure and variation in fundamental frequency, have been studied by using acoustic spectrum of thunder. S-transformation has been used to estimate the dominant frequency variation around the peak pressure. The mean fundamental frequencies of type 3 ground and cloud flashes are 160 Hz and 98 Hz respectively. The mean frequencies of type 2 ground and cloud flashes are 108 Hz and 82 Hz respectively.

  • Sound Source Localization of Lightning Discharges
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lightning channel can be retraced by thunder signature recorded with an array of microphones. Four microphones were arranged to capture thunder sound, and acoustic cross-correlation of captured pressure signals estimated the time lag of each pair of microphones. A wave segment with 0.25 s or 0.5 s of duration was compared with the acoustic signal recorded by other microphones to estimate time lapse. The direction of channel propagation has been estimated by the time difference of arrival of each pair of microphones. Thunder source locations estimated by this method can be extended to investigate the channel propagation inside clouds.

  • Lightning Localization Based on VHF Broadband Interferometer Developed in Sri Lanka
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 34th international conference on lightning protection (ICLP 2018). - New York : IEEE. - 9781538666357
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A basic broadband digital interferometer was developed, which is capable of locating Very High Frequency (VHF) radiation sources in two spatial dimensions and time. Three antennas sensed the time series of broadband electromagnetic (EM) signals and digitized with 4 ns sampling interval for a duration of several milliseconds. A technique based on cross-correlations has been implemented for mapping lightning source locations. A map of the first return stroke (RS) and the preceding stepped leader was mapped successfully, using the system with a time resolution of few milliseconds. The result was compared with the visible events of the ground flash to validate the system.

  • Chaotic Pulse Train in Cloud-to-Ground and Cloud Flashes of Tropical Thunderstorms
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we report for the first time the observation of chaotic pulse train (CPT) preceding natural subsequent negative return strokes and also CPT occurrence in IC flashes from tropical thunderstorms in South Malaysia. In CG flashes, all CPTs were occurred in between return strokes with 41.1% have occurred between the first and second return strokes. The maximum number of CPT in one sequence is 3, which can be observed between the first and third return strokes only. In IC flashes, all CPTs were observed to occur in between IC flash pulses.
