  • Distribution of arsenic and its mobility in shallow aquifer sediments from Ambikanagar, West Bengal, India
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Applied Geochemistry. - : Elsevier. - 0883-2927 .- 1872-9134. ; 26:4, s. 505-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sediments from a core retrieved during installation of a shallow drinking water well in Ambikanagar (West Bengal, India) were analyzed for various physical and chemical parameters. The geochemical analyses included: (1) a 4-step sequential extraction scheme to determine the distribution of As between different fractions, (2) As speciation (As(3+) vs. As(5+)), and (3) C, N and S isotopes. The sediments have a low percentage of organic C and N (0.10-0.56% and 0.01-0.05%, respectively). Arsenic concentration is between 2 and 7 mg kg(-1), and it is mainly associated with the residual fraction, less susceptible to chemical weathering. The proportion of As(3+) in these sediments is high and ranges from 24% to 74%. Arsenic in the second fraction (reducible) correlates well with Mn, and in the residual fraction As correlates well with several transition elements. The stable isotope results indicate microbial oxidation of organic matter involving SO(4) reduction. Oxidation of primary sulfide minerals and release of As from reduction of Fe(oxy)hydroxides do not seem important mechanisms in As mobilization. Instead, the dominance of As(3+) and presence of As(5+) reducing microorganisms in this shallow aquifer imply As remobilization involving microbial processes that needs further investigations.

  • Mapping Tree Height in Burkina Faso Parklands with TanDEM-X
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Remote Sensing. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-4292. ; 13:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mapping of tree height is of great importance for management, planning, and research related to agroforestry parklands in Africa. In this paper, we investigate the potential of spotlight-mode data from the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) satellite system TanDEM-X (TDM) for mapping of tree height in Sapone, Burkina Faso, a test site characterised by a low average canopy cover (similar to 15%) and a mean tree height of 9.0 m. Seven TDM acquisitions from January-April 2018 are used jointly to create high-resolution (similar to 3 m) maps of interferometric phase height and mean canopy elevation, the latter derived using a new, model-based processing approach compensating for some effects of the side-looking geometry of SAR. Compared with phase height, mean canopy elevation provides a more accurate representation of tree height variations, a better tree positioning accuracy, and better tree height estimation performance when assessed using 915 trees inventoried in situ and representing 15 different species/genera. We observe and discuss two bias effects, and we use empirical models to compensate for these effects. The best-performing model using only TDM data provides tree height estimates with a standard error (SE) of 2.8 m (31% of the average height) and a correlation coefficient of 75%. The estimation performance is further improved when TDM height data are combined with in situ measurements; this is a promising result in view of future synergies with other remote sensing techniques or ground measurement-supported monitoring of well-known trees.

  • Metamorphism and Structural Interpretation of the Zanskar Shear Zone, PJW Himalaya, India
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Geological Society of India. - : Geological society of India. - 0016-7622 .- 0974-6889. ; 41:3, s. 187-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herren in 1987, reported normal faults resulted in the telescoping of metamorphic isograds within a 200 meter zone between Sumche Topko to Mulung Topko in the Zanskar Shear Zone NW Himalaya. However petrographic study-of sections obtained from Mulung Topko and surrounding areas (pensila-padarn section) indicate that the rocks belong to the kyanite-sillimanite-starurolite grade only. Extension crenulation cleavage and other shear criteria show an initial NESW movement after which a layer parallel extension occurred and the shear zone developed. Minieralogical assemblage and mapping indicate that the isograds run paralleI to each other before they possibly truncate against the shear zone along the Pensila-Padam section. A probable model has been proposed to explain the features

  • Multi-proxy study of soil organic matter dynamics in permafrost peat deposits reveal vulnerability to climate change in the European Russian Arctic
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Chemical Geology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0009-2541 .- 1872-6836. ; 368, s. 104-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil organic carbon (SOC) in permafrost terrain is vulnerable to climate change. Perennially frozen peat deposits store large amounts of SOC, but we know little about its chemical composition and lability. We used plant macrofossil and biomarker analyses to reconstruct the Holocene paleovegetation and paleoenvironmental changes in two peat plateau profiles from the European Russian Arctic. Peat plateaus are the main stores of permafrost soil C in the region, but during most of the Holocene peats developed as permafrost-free rich fens with woody vegetation, sedges and mosses. Around 2200 cal BP, permafrost aggraded at the site resulting in frost heave and a drastic reduction in peat accumulation under the drier uplifted surface conditions. The permafrost dynamics (aggradation, frost-heave and thaw) ushered changes in plant assemblages and carbon accumulation, and consequently in the biomarker trends too. Detailed biomarker analyses indicate abundant neutral lipids, which follow the general pattern: n-alkanols > sterols >= n-alkanes >= triterpenols. The lignin monomers are not as abundant as the lipids and increase with depth. The selected aliphatic and phenolic compounds are source specific, and they have different degrees of lability, which is useful for tracing the impact of permafrost dynamics (peat accumulation and/or decay associated with thawing). However, common interpretation of biomarker patterns, and perceived hydrological and climate changes, must be applied carefully in permafrost regions. The increased proportion (selective preservation) of n-alkanes and lignin is a robust indicator of cumulative decomposition trajectories, which is mirrored by functional compounds (e. g. n-alkanol, triterpenol, and sterol concentrations) showing opposite trends. The distribution of these compounds follows first order decay kinetics, and concurs with the down core diagenetic changes. In particular, some of the biomarker ratios (e. g. stanol/sterol and higher plant alkane index) seem promising for tracing SOC decomposition despite changes in botanical imprint, and sites spanning across different soil types and locations. Carbon accumulation rate calculated at these sites varies from 18.1 to 31.1 gC m(-2) yr(-1), and it's evident selective preservation, molecular complexity of organic compounds, and freezing conditions enhance the long-term stability of SOC. Further, our results suggest that permafrost dynamics strongly impact the more undecomposed SOC that could be rapidly remobilized through ongoing thermokarst expansion.

  • Chloride retention in forest soil by microbial uptake and by natural chlorination of organic matter
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Geochimica Cosmochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7037 .- 1872-9533. ; 71:13, s. 3182-3192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inorganic chlorine (i.e. chloride; Cl-in) is generally considered inert in soil and is often used as a tracer of soil and ground water movements. However, recent studies indicate that substantial retention or release of Cl-in can occur in soil, but the rates and processes responsible under different environmental conditions are largely unknown. We performed Cl-36 tracer experiments which indicated that short-term microbial uptake and release of Cl-in, in combination with more long-term natural formation of chlorinated organic matter (Cl-org), caused Cl-in imbalances in coniferous forest soil. Extensive microbial uptake and release of Cl-in occurred over short time scales, and were probably associated with changes in environmental conditions. Up to 24% of the initially available Clin within pore water was retained by microbial uptake within a week in our experiments, but most of this Cl-in, was released to the pore water again within a month, probably associated with decreasing microbial populations. The natural formation of Clorg resulted in a net immobilization of 4% of the initial pore water Clin over four months. If this rate is representative for the area where soil was collected, Clorg formation would correspond to a conversion of 25% of the yearly wet deposition of Cl-in. The study illustrates the potential of two Clin retaining processes in addition to those previously addressed elsewhere (e.g. uptake of chloride by vegetation). Hence, several processes operating at different time scales and with different regulation mechanisms can cause Clin imbalances in soil. Altogether, the results of the present study (1) provide evidence that Cl-in cannot be assumed to be inert in soil, (2) show that microbial exchange can regulate pore water Cl-in, concentrations and (3) confirm the controversial idea of substantial natural chlorination of soil organic matter.

  • Ice-dammed lakes and deglaciation history of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in central Jämtland, Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extensive glacial lakes dammed in the Scandinavian Mountains during the retreat of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet were first hypothesised over a century ago. Here, using high-resolution LiDAR, we report >4500 relict shorelines, deltas and palaeo-channels related to ice-dammed lakes over a -30 000 km2 area of central Jämtland, west-central Sweden. Shorelines occur as flights on the valley sides, a consequence of sequential lowering of palaeo-lake levels during ice margin retreat and lower threshold outlets becoming ice-free. Based on the extent and elevation of shorelines, we identify requisite lake-damming ice-margin positions and lake drainage outlets, and we reconstruct the coupled evolution of ice-dammed lakes and the retreating ice margin. Beginning as a series of smaller ice-dammed lakes along the Swedish-Norwegian border, draining westward across the present-day water divide and into the Atlantic Ocean, the lakes successively coalesced during eastward ice margin retreat to form water bodies covering 1000s of km2 with 10s of km-long calving margins. Ultimately, the lake system coalesced into a single lake: the Central Jämtland Ice Lake, which exceeded 3500 km2 in area and 360 km3 in volume. Eventually, the damming ice-margin split in two, resulting in a large (-200 km2) catastrophic glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that reversed the drainage of the entire lake system from the west to an eastern outlet draining to the Baltic basin. We present new radiocarbon ages for one lake drainage event prior to the eastward outburst flood and, together with previously published deglacial ages and local varve records, we suggest that the region was possibly deglaciated within just 350 years, sometime between 10.5 and 9.2 cal ka BP. We tentatively correlate the penultimate drainage of the Central Jämtland Ice Lake to the zero-varve of the Swedish Time Scale, a drainage varve at Döviken, eastern Jämtland, raising the tantalising prospect of using the evolution of the ice-dammed lake system to tie the varve-based Swedish Time Scale to the radiocarbon timescale with a new programme of radiocarbon dating in central Jämtland.

  • Possible artifacts in inferring seismic properties from X-ray data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0031-9201 .- 1872-7395. ; 260, s. 14-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the experimental and computational artifacts relevant for the extraction of aggregate elastic properties of polycrystalline materials with particular emphasis on the derivation of seismic velocities. We use the case of iron as an example, and show that the improper use of definitions and neglecting the crystalline anisotropy can result in unexpectedly large errors up to a few percent. • Isometric Point-Circle Configurations on Surfaces from Uniform Maps
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics. - Cham : Springer-Verlag New York. - 2194-1009. ; 159, s. 201-212, s. 201-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We embed neighborhood geometries of graphs on surfaces as point-circle configurations. We give examples coming from regular maps on surfaces with a maximum number of automorphisms for their genus, and survey geometric realization of pentagonal geometries coming from Moore graphs. An infinite family of point-circle v4'>v4v4 configurations on p-gonal surfaces with two p-gonal morphisms is given. The image of these configurations on the sphere under the two p-gonal morphisms is also described.

  • On Rotational Waves of Limit Amplitude
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Functional analysis and its applications. - : PLEIADES PUBLISHING INC. - 0016-2663 .- 1573-8485. ; 55:2, s. 165-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this note we discuss some recent results on extreme steady waves under gravity. They include the existence and regularity theorems for highest waves on finite depth with and without vorticity. Furthermore, we state new results concerning the asymptotic behavior of surface profiles near stagnation points. In particular, we find that the wave profile of an extreme wave is concave near each crest, provided that the vorticity is negative near the surface.

  • Learning Motion Patterns in AIS Data and Detecting Anomalous Vessel Behavior
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 IEEE 24th International Conference on Information Fusion (FUSION). - : IEEE. - 9781737749714 - 9781665414272 ; , s. 612-619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new approach to anomaly detection in maritime traffic based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data is proposed. The method recursively learns a model of the nominal vessel routes from AIS data and simultaneously estimates the current state of the vessels. A distinction between anomalies and measurement outliers is made and a method to detect and distinguish between the two is proposed. The anomaly and outlier detection is based on statistical testing relative to the current motion model. The proposed method is evaluated on historical AIS data from a coastal area in Sweden and is shown to detect previously unseen motions.
