  • Magmatic water contents determined through clinopyroxene : Examples from the Western Canary Islands, Spain
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems. - 1525-2027. ; 16:7, s. 2127-2146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water is a key parameter in magma genesis, magma evolution, and resulting eruption styles, because it controls the density, the viscosity, as well as the melting and crystallization behavior of a melt. The parental water content of a magma is usually measured through melt inclusions in minerals such as olivine, a method which may be hampered, however, by the lack of melt inclusions suitable for analysis, or postentrapment changes in their water content. An alternative way to reconstruct the water content of a magma is to use nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs), such as pyroxene, which take up low concentrations of hydrogen as a function of the magma's water content. During magma degassing and eruption, however, NAMs may dehydrate. We therefore tested a method to reconstruct the water contents of dehydrated clinopyroxene phenocrysts from the Western Canary islands (n=28) through rehydration experiments followed by infrared and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Employing currently available crystal/melt partitioning data, the results of the experiments were used to calculate parental water contents of 0.710.07 to 1.490.15 wt % H2O for Western Canary magmas during clinopyroxene crystallization at upper mantle conditions. This H2O range is in agreement with calculated water contents using plagioclase-liquid-hygrometry, and with previously published data for mafic lavas from the Canary Islands and comparable ocean island systems elsewhere. Utilizing NAMs in combination with hydrogen treatment can therefore serve as a proxy for pre-eruptive H2O contents, which we anticipate becoming a useful method applicable to mafic rocks where pyroxene is the main phenocryst phase.

  • Iron isotopes constrain sub-seafloor hydrothermal processes at the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) active sulfide mound
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications Earth & Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-4435. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sub-seafloor hydrothermal processes along volcanically active plate boundaries are integral to the formation of seafloor massive sulfide deposits and to oceanic iron cycling, yet the nature of their relationship is poorly understood. Here we apply iron isotope analysis to sulfide minerals from the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) mound and underlying stockwork, 26°N Mid-Atlantic Ridge, to trace hydrothermal processes inside an actively-forming sulfide deposit in a sediment-free mid-ocean ridge setting. We show that data for recently formed chalcopyrite imply hydrothermal fluid–mound interactions cause small negative shifts (<−0.1‰) to the δ56Fe signature of dissolved iron released from TAG into the North Atlantic Ocean. Texturally distinct types of pyrite, in turn, preserve a δ56Fe range from −1.27 to +0.56‰ that reflects contrasting precipitation mechanisms (hydrothermal fluid–seawater mixing vs. conductive cooling) and variable degrees of progressive hydrothermal maturation during the >20 kyr evolution of the TAG complex. The identified processes may explain iron isotope variations found in fossil onshore sulfide deposits.

  • Carbonatite ring-complexes explained by caldera-style volcanism
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbonatites are rare, carbonate-rich magmatic rocks that make up a minute portion of the crust only, yet they are of great relevance for our understanding of crustal and mantle processes. Although they occur in all continents and from Archaean to present, the deeper plumbing system of carbonatite ring-complexes is usually poorly constrained. Here, we show that carbonatite ring-complexes can be explained by caldera-style volcanism. Our geophysical investigation of the Alnö carbonatite ring-complex in central Sweden identifies a solidified saucer-shaped magma chamber at ∼3 km depth that links to surface exposures through a ring fault system. Caldera subsidence during final stages of activity caused carbonatite eruptions north of the main complex, providing the crucial element to connect plutonic and eruptive features of carbonatite magmatism. The way carbonatite magmas are stored, transported and erupt at the surface is thus comparable to known emplacement styles from silicic calderas.

  • Boron isotope fractionation in magma via crustal carbonate dissolution.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon dioxide released by arc volcanoes is widely considered to originate from the mantle and from subducted sediments. Fluids released from upper arc carbonates, however, have recently been proposed to help modulate arc CO2 fluxes. Here we use boron as a tracer, which substitutes for carbon in limestone, to further investigate crustal carbonate degassing in volcanic arcs. We performed laboratory experiments replicating limestone assimilation into magma at crustal pressure-temperature conditions and analysed boron isotope ratios in the resulting experimental glasses. Limestone dissolution and assimilation generates CaO-enriched glass near the reaction site and a CO2-dominated vapour phase. The CaO-rich glasses have extremely low δ11B values down to −41.5‰, reflecting preferential partitioning of 10B into the assimilating melt. Loss of 11B from the reaction site occurs via the CO2 vapour phase generated during carbonate dissolution, which transports 11B away from the reaction site as a boron-rich fluid phase. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of boron isotope fractionation during crustal carbonate assimilation and suggest that low δ11B melt values in arc magmas could flag shallow-level additions to the subduction cycle.

  • Resolving volatile sources along the western Sunda arc, Indonesia
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chemical Geology. - : Elsevier. - 0009-2541 .- 1872-6836. ; 339:SI, s. 263-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the chemical and isotope (HeCN) characterization of active fumaroles and hydrothermal gases and waters from the summits and flanks of 19 volcanic centers along the western Sunda arc, Indonesia. Samples were collected over two field expeditions (1991 and 2010) and cover 13 volcanic centers in Sumatra, 5 in Java and one in Bali. In addition, we present data from three geothermal sites in Sumatra associated with active fault systems in-between volcanic centers (IBVC). The overall aim is to resolve volatiles associated with the sub-arc mantle (subducting slab and mantle wedge) from inputs derived from the over-riding arc crust. The western Sunda arc is a prime locality to assess controls on volatile provenance at subduction zones due to changes in composition and thickness of over-riding crust and variations in sediment input rates along the strike of the arc.The dry gas chemistry of the majority of volcanic samples is dominated by CO2 with inert gas variations (HeArN2) typical of subduction zone gases. However, there is a strong crustal control on the HeCO2 isotope and relative abundance systematics on a number of volcanic centers: this effect is most clearly observed at flank localities and in water phase samples. Filtering the entire database for modifications due to air contamination, degassing-induced fractionation (C-isotopes and CO2/3He ratios) and crustal contamination associated with volatile transport within shallow-level hydrothermal systems allows recognition of the magmatic volatile signature of individual volcanoes along the arc. Helium isotopes at all but two volcanic centers (Talang and Dempo on Sumatra) range from 5.3 RA to 8.1 RA (RA = air 3He/4He) pointing to the mantle wedge as the principal source of He but with a small input of crustal (radiogenic) He at some localities. Samples from Java and Bali span an even more limited range (6.6 to 7.9 RA) implying a relatively smaller input of crustal He. Carbon isotope and CO2/3He ratios vary from − 1.4‰ to − 6.4‰ and 4.38 to 150 (× 109), respectively, with higher and more variable values to the north of Sumatra. This latitudinal effect is not apparent in air-corrected N-isotope values (δ15NC = − 3.91 to + 5.92‰) or various elemental ratios such as N2/Ar and N2/He. The three IBVC sites, all located in Sumatra, have significantly lower 3He/4He ratios (< 3.6 RA) with CO2/3He values both higher and lower than volcanic centers. Their δ13C, δ15NC and gas ratios overlap with the volcanic centers. The elemental and isotopic characteristics of carbon and helium have been modified at IBVC sites due to crustal processes. However, based upon relationships between CH4 and 3He as well as co-variations between HeCN isotopes, the over-riding crust and associated sediments add minimal volatiles to volcanic centers throughout the western Sunda arc. In turn, subducted sediment, particularly the Nicobar Fan which supplies Himalayan-derived sediment to the slab off Sumatra, exerts a strong control on the magmatic CO2 characteristics although it is less influential for N2. In spite of large sections of incoming sedimentary material being off-scraped during subduction, our data suggest that a significant fraction must enter the trench, enhancing fluid/melt production in the mantle wedge. We propose that subduction-related source contamination plays the dominant role over thick/old crustal basement in supplying the major volatile output budget of the western Sunda arc.

  • Magmatic differentiation processes at Merapi Volcano : inclusion petrology and oxygen isotopes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-0273 .- 1872-6097. ; 261:SI, s. 38-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Indonesian volcano Merapi is one of the most hazardous volcanoes on the planet and is characterised by periods of active dome growth and intermittent explosive events. Merapi currently degasses continuously through high temperature fumaroles and erupts basaltic-andesite dome lavas and associated block-and-ash-flows that carry a large range of magmatic, coarsely crystalline plutonic, and meta-sedimentary inclusions. These inclusions are useful in order to evaluate magmatic processes that act within Merapi's plumbing system, and to help an assessment of which phenomena could trigger explosive eruptions. With the aid of petrological, textural, and oxygen isotope analysis we record a range of processes during crustal magma storage and transport, including mafic recharge, magma mixing, crystal fractionation, and country rock assimilation. Notably, abundant calc-silicate inclusions (true xenoliths) and elevated δ18O values in feldspar phenocrysts from 1994, 1998, 2006, and 2010 Merapi lavas suggest addition of limestone and calc-silicate materials to the Merapi magmas. Together with high δ13C values in fumarole gas, crustal additions to mantle and slab-derived magma and volatile sources are likely a steady state process at Merapi. This late crustal input could well represent an eruption trigger due to sudden over-pressurisation of the shallowest parts of the magma storage system independently of magmatic recharge and crystal fractionation. Limited seismic precursors may be associated with this type of eruption trigger, offering a potential explanation for the sometimes erratic behaviour of Merapi during volcanic crises.

  • The magma plumbing system for the 1971 Teneguía eruption on La Palma, Canary Islands
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0010-7999 .- 1432-0967. ; 170:5-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 1971 Teneguía eruption is the most recent volcanic event of the Cumbre Vieja rift zone on La Palma. The eruption produced basanite lavas that host xenoliths, which we investigate to provide insight into the processes of differentiation, assimilation and magma storage beneath La Palma. We compare our results to the older volcanomagmatic systems of the island with the aim to reconstruct the temporal development of the magma plumbing system beneath La Palma. The 1971 lavas are clinopyroxene-olivine-phyric basanites that contain augite, sodic-augite and Aluminium augite. Kaersutite cumulate xenoliths host olivine, clinopyroxene including sodic-diopside, and calcic-amphibole, whereas an analysed leucogabbro xenolith hosts plagioclase, sodic-augite-diopside, calcic-amphibole and hauyne. Mineral and mineral-melt thermobarometry indicate that clinopyroxene and plagioclase in the 1971 Teneguía lavas crystallised at 20 to 45 km depth, coinciding with clinopyroxene and calcic-amphibole crystallisation in the kaersutite cumulate xenoliths at 25 to 45 km and clinopyroxene, calcic-amphibole and plagioclase crystallisation in the leucogabbro xenolith at 30 to 50 km.Combined mineral chemistry and thermobarometry suggest that the magmas had already crystallised, differentiated and formed multiple crystal populations in the oceanic lithospheric mantle. Notably, the magmas that supplied the 1949 and 1971 events appear to have crystallised deeper than the earlier Cumbre Vieja magmas, which suggests progressive underplating beneath the Cumbre Vieja rift zone. In addition, the lavas and xenoliths of the 1971 event crystallised at a common depth, indicating a reused plumbing system and progressive recycling of Ocean Island plutonic complexes during subsequent magmatic activity.

  • High Arctic Large Igneous Province Alkaline Rocks in Canada : Evidence for Multiple Mantle Components
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Petrology. - : Oxford University Press. - 0022-3530 .- 1460-2415. ; 62:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cretaceous High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) in Canada, although dominated by tholeiites (135-90 Ma), contains two main groups of alkaline igneous rocks. The older alkaline rocks (similar to 96 Ma) scatter around major fault and basement structures. They are represented by the newly defined Fulmar Suite alkaline basalt dykes and sills, and include Hassel Formation volcanic rocks. The younger alkaline group is represented by the Wootton Intrusive Complex (92.2-92.7 Ma), and the Audhild Bay Suite (83-73 Ma), both emplaced near the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. Fulmar Suite rocks resemble EM-type ocean island basalts (OIB) and most show limited crustal contamination. The Fulmar Suite shows increases of P2O5 at near-constant Ba-K-Zr-Ti that are nearly orthogonal to predicted fractionation- or melting-related variations, which we interpret as the result of melting composite mantle sources containing a regionally widespread apatite-bearing enriched component (P1). Low-P2O5 Fulmar Suite variants overlap compositionally with enriched HALIP tholeiites, and fall on common garnet Iherzolite trace element melting trajectories, suggesting variable degrees of melting of a geochemically similar source. High-P2O5 Hassel Formation basalts are unusual among Fulmar rocks, because they are strongly contaminated with depleted lower crust; and because they involve a high-P2O5-Ba-Eu mantle component (P2), similar to that seen in alkali basalt dykes from Greenland. The P2 component may have contained Ba-Eu-rich hawthorneite and/or carbonate minerals as well as apatite, and may typify parts of the Greenlandic sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). Mafic alkaline Audhild Bay Suite (ABS) rocks are volcanic and hypabyssal basanites, alkaline basalts and trachy-andesites, and resemble HIMU ocean island basalts in having high Nb, low Zr/Nb and low Sr-87/Sr-86(i). These mafic alkaline rocks are associated with felsic alkaline lavas and syenitic intrusions, but crustally derived rhyodacites and rhyolites also exist. The Wootton Intrusive Complex (WIC) contains geochemically similar plutonic rocks (alkali gabbros, diorites and anatectic granites), and may represent a more deeply eroded, slightly older equivalent of the ABS. Low-P2O5 ABS and WIC alkaline mafic rocks have flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) profiles suggesting shallow mantle melting; whereas High-P2O5 variants have steep HREE profiles indicating deeper separation from garnet-bearing residues. Some High-P2O5 mafic ABS rocks seem to contain the P1 and P2 components identified in Fulmar-Hassel rocks, whereas other samples trend towards possible High-P2O5 + Zr (PZr) and High-P2O5 + K2O (PK) components. We argue that the strongly alkaline northern Ellesmere Island magmas sampled mineralogically heterogeneous veins or metasomes in Greenlandic-type SCLM, which contained trace phases such as apatite, carbonates, hawthorneite, zircon, mica or richterite. The geographically more widespread apatite-bearing component (P1) could have formed part of a heterogeneous plume or upwelling mantle current that also generated HALIP tholeiites when melted more extensively, but may also have resided in the SCLM as relics of older events. Rare HALIP alkaline rocks with high K-Rb-U-Th fall on mixing paths implying strong local contamination from either Sverdrup Basin sedimentary rocks or granitic upper crust. However, the scarcity of potassic alkaline HALIP facies, together with the other trace element and isotopic signatures, provides little support for a ubiquitous fossil sedimentary subduction-zone component in the HALIP mantle source.
