The Bugs Coleopteran Ecology Package (BugsCEP) : the development and implementation of software for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatological research

- This book describes the development and practical application of a unique database orientated software package, BugsCEP, for environmental, climatic and biodiversity reconstruction from beetle assemblages. BugsCEP consists of a database of ecology and distribution data for over 9400 insect taxa, and includes temperature tolerance data for 436 species. It contains abundance and summary data for over 770 sites, most of the known European Quaternary fossil coleopteran record, supported by a bibliography of over 3700 sources. Built in statistics, including a specially developed habitat classification system, provide semi-quantitative environmental reconstructions to aid in the interpretation of sites. BugsCEP's querying and reporting functions also increase the efficiency with which analyses can be undertaken, including the facility to explore the fossil record of species by searching ecology and distribution data. The Mutual Climatic Range (MCR) reconstruction method is implemented and improved upon, including predictive modelling and the graphical output of reconstructions and climate space maps. - Lost World of Rēkohu explores the extraordinary fossil record of one of the most remote regions of the planet—the Chatham Islands. Once the home of the mysterious Moriori people, this archipelago approximately 850 km east of mainland New Zealand preserves a rock archive from a dynamic time in Earth’s history when the southern continents were land-locked together near the South Pole 100 million years ago. Isolated for 83 million years, we now know since the dawn of the new millennium that this ancient region was heavily forested with both avian and non-avian dinosaurs, and the warm waters hosted the largest sea monsters—marine reptiles—that ever lived. This diversity of life on land and in the sea tells a tale never told before in Zealandia, the Moriori’s magical land of the ‘Misty Skies’.

Benthic foraminifera and environmental change: a case study from the SW Baltic Sea

- The Baltic Sea ecosystem undergoes a high environmental variability due to the occasional ventilation of deep water by highly saline Kattegat water, which enters the Baltic through the narrow and shallow Danish Straits. During the past two decades, the frequency of major inflows decreased and led to extended periods of stagnation with reduced deep-water oxygenation. At the same time, a growing economy caused a significant anthropogenic pollution in the area. The anthropogenic influx of different pollutants caused eutrophication, oxygen depletion and left elevated levels of trace metals in the sediments. These environmental changes are seen today at all trophic levels of living organisms and affected even one of the smallest inhabitants of the Baltic Sea: benthic foraminifera. In this thesis, foraminifera are evaluated as proxies of recent environmental change of both natural and anthropogenic origin in two shallow fjords of the Kiel Bight (SW Baltic Sea).

- Do you know silica, the tetrahedra of silicon and oxygen constituting the crystals of New Agers and the desiccant in a box of new shoes? It’s no mere mundane mineral. As chemically reacting silicate rocks, silica set off the chain of events known as the origin of life. As biomineralized opal, it is the cell wall, skeleton, spicules, and scales of organisms ornamenting numerous lobes of the tree of life. Cryptocrystalline silica made into stone tools helped drive the evolution of our hands and our capability for complex grammar, music, and mathematics. As quartz crystals, silica is impressively electric and ubiquitous in modern technology (think sonar, radios, telephones, ultrasound, and cheap but precise watches). Silica is inescapable when we take a drink or mow the lawn and it has already started to save the Earth from the carbon dioxide we’re spewing into the atmosphere. This book tells these scientific tales and more, to give dear, modest silica its due.

- En geopark är ett område med geologi av internationell betydelse – alltså något som är unikt i världen. Inom geoparken arbetar vi aktivt för att sprida kunskap om geologi och sambanden mellan geologi, biologi och kulturhistoria till barn och unga. Platåbergens Geopark är ett samverkansprojekt mellan de nio kommunerna Trollhättan, Vänersborg, Grästorp, Lidköping, Skara, Götene, Mariestad, Skövde och Falköping. Grästorps kommun är projektägare. Under hösten 2019 lämnas en ansökan in till Unesco, om att bli en Unesco Global Geopark. Serietidningen Trollberg är ett samarbete mellan Platåbergens Geopark och projektet KASTiS – Kulturarv och spelteknologi i Skaraborg. KASTiS finansieras av Skaraborgs kommunalförbund och Högskolan i Skövde. Med den här serietidningen vill vi skapa nyfikenhet kring geologi och särskilt då för platser som finns inom Platåbergens Geopark.
