    • The Colombian Andes are the product of the interaction of terranes with different geological affinity, such as the Western Cordillera, which is made up of blocks of oceanic affinity, that have been accreted to the western boundary of pre-existing terranes with continental affinity. The study area is geologically dominated by the Sabanalarga Batholith, which has at least two facies, gabro-diorite and tonalitie-granodiorite, that intrude the Barroso Formation. Both units have been affected strongly by regional faults generating large areas of mylonites closely related with hydrothermal alterations and mineralization occurrences. Due the clear intrusive relationship between the Sabanalarga Batholith and Barroso Formation, and due the Cauca-Almaguer fault cuts both units without separating them, it is suggested that the Terranes Theory must be reconsidered in this part of the country, because the Cauca-Almaguer fault do not correspond to the boundary between Calima Terrane and the terranes Arquía and Quebradagrande.

    • Trilobites from two lower Ovetian (low lower Cambrian) localities in Sierra Morena (south of Spain) are described. Serrania palaciosi nov. sp. and Serrania? gordaensis nov. sp. come from the western locality (Alconera). New specimens of Serrania verae Linan Guijarro, 1978 come from the eastern locality (Sierra de Cordoba). The ontogenetic study of S. verae suggests that this species evolved from S. palaciosi. The new material allows us to include the genus Serrania within the new subfamily Serrinae defined herein, belonging to the family Bigotinidae. We include also two more genera with a lateral spine in the glabella, Hupetina and Sdzuyia. According to its stratigraphical position and the associated taxa, we can determinate that S. verae belongs to the Lemdadella linaresae Zone, corresponding to the lower part of the archaeocyatids Zone III. On the basis of stratigraphic and phylogenetic criteria, S. palaciosi nov. sp. and S.? gordaensis nov. sp. from Alconera belong probably to the Zone I of archaeocyathids. Some unclassifiable trilobite fragments have been also found in the Zone I of archaeocyathids at the Ovetian stratotype in Sierra de Cordoba, below the trilobite zone of Bigotina bivallata (which is equivalent to the trilobite Zone 0, or Eofallotaspis Zone, of Morocco). The new species defined herein are, up to now, the oldest trilobites described from Gondwana.

  • In vitro digestibility of starch in cooked-milled common beans

    • In spite of the importance of legumes in Latin American diets, nutritional features of carbohydrates in these seeds are scarcely known. The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro digestibility of starch in cooked powdered black beans, a common type of product in Mexico and Central America. The properties of a commercial product were compared to those of an experimental material obtained by seed pressure cooking, milling and drum drying. Available starch content varied between 29 and 35% (d.m.b.), whereas retrograded resistant starch (RS) levels ranged between 2.7 and 3.7%. The experimental product exhibited the highest RS values. Both types of samples were slowly digested by a-amylase, in particular the commercial preparation, suggesting that these products may elicit low glycemic responses.
