  • COMPARISON OF SENTINEL-1 SAR AND SENTINEL-3 ALTIMETRY DATA FOR SEA ICE TYPE DISCRIMINATION
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. - 9781538691540
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper near co-incidental Sentinel-1 C-band SAR imagery and Sentinel-3 SRAL Ku-band altimeter data are compared for their capabilities of sea ice type discrimination. Knowledge of sea ice type is important for climate research and safety in Arctic offshore operations. First-year ice is characterised by a low SAR backscatter intensity in both HH and HV polarisation compared to multi-year ice, while the altimeter waveform parameters show high pulse peakiness and peak power compared to multi-year ice. Thus SAR imagery and altimetry can principally discriminate different ice types. The complexity of the backscattered radar signal however impedes a clear separation of the two types for all cases. Cross comparison of the two sensors offers an opportunity of high resolution validation data, which is often lacking for sea ice studies.

  • REMOTE ASSESSMENT OF SUSTAINABLE GROUNDWATER RESOURCES USING KAREZES (QANATS), NORTH OF KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference Surveying Geology and Mining Ecology Management, SGEM Vol. 21, Iss. 3.2. - 1314-2704.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Karezes represent a sustainable water supply since their discharge is regulated by the natural groundwater renewal in the mountains and on upslope surfaces in the valleys. Although most karezes have become inactive due to lowered groundwater levels, they can still be used together with other accessible information sources to initially and remotely interpret basin geohydrology and the groundwater resources when they were constructed (and today if still active). This is mainly done by using karezes to map the depth and slope of the groundwater table. Also, spatial and temporal changes in the water supply from karezes can indicate changing climatic and anthropogenic influences on groundwater resources. The aim of this paper is to present an approach that combines the “karez archive” of hydrogeological information with other, assessable information sources, such as topographic and climatic databases. Endemic knowledge is stressed as an importance and practical verification of the assessment, as well as a crucial component of the applications toward sustainable water management. The basin-specific conditions interpreted are most important in regions with poor data control for modeling basin hydrology. The characterization and combination of information sources is exemplified using karezes NW of Kandahar, Afghanistan.

  • Hydrological Feasibility of Flood Barriers to Protect the Gothenburg (Sweden) during the 21st Century - An Initial Assessment
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Conference: XXVIII Nordic Hydrological Conference, Nordic Water 2014: The Nordic Hydrology Model - Linking science and practice, At Stockholm, Sweden, 11-13 August 2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Climate change due to increasing of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere will cause mean sea level to rise about +1 m by 2100. To prevent coastal floods resulted from the sea level rising, different flood control structures have been built and showed acceptable protection levels at least so far; e.g. Thames Barrier in London, UK. Gothenburg city on the south-west coast of Sweden, with the Göta älv River running through it, is one of vulnerable cities to the accelerated sea level rise. Besides, a high tide in southern Sweden will be increased to +2 m above the current sea level by 2100. Hence, most parts of Gothenburg will experience flooding events during the 21st century, even the City Planning Office of Gothenburg suggests +2.5 m above the current sea level as the safe level for setting the shelter of especially important facilities by 2100. Developing water level model by MATLAB, we investigated the hydrological feasibility of using flood barriers in the Göta älv River to protect the Gothenburg city against flooding events during this century. One flood control barrier at the river upstream (upstream barrier) in the Gothenburg region and a sea barrage (Göta älv barrage) at the entrance point of the river to the North Sea were suggested by this study. Considering three operational scenarios for these barriers, the highest sea level was estimated to +2.95 m above the current mean sea level by 2100. To prove flood protection against such high sea levels, both barriers have to be closed. In order to prevent high water levels in the Göta älv reservoir due to the runoff generation from rainfall, the barriers would be open when the sea level is low. This preliminary assessment concluded the suggested sea and flood barriers would successfully protect the Gothenburg city from flooding events during the 21st century.

  • Mantle viscosity derived from geoid and different land uplift data in Greenland
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Earth’s mass redistribution due to deglaciation and recent ice sheet melting causes changes in the Earth’s gravity field and vertical land motion in Greenland. The changes are because of ongoing mass redistribution and related elastic (on a short time scale) and viscoelastic (on time scales of a few thousands of years) responses. These signatures can be used to determine the mantle viscosity. In this study, we infer the mantle viscosity associated with the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and long-wavelength geoid beneath the Greenland lithosphere. The viscosity is determined based on a spatio-spectral analysis of the Earth’s gravity field and the land uplift rate in order to find the GIA-related gravity field. We used and evaluated different land uplift data, i.e. the vertical land motions obtained by the Greenland Global Positioning System (GPS) Network (GNET), GRACE and Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) data. In addition, a  combined land uplift rate using the Kalman filtering technique is presented in this study. We extract the GIA-related gravity signals by filtering the other effects due to the deeper masses i.e. core-mantle (related to long-wavelengths) and topography (related to short-wavelengths). To do this, we applied correlation analysis to detect the best harmonic window. Finally, the mantle viscosity using the obtained GIA-related gravity field is estimated. Using different land uplift rates, one can obtain different GIA-related gravity fields. For example, different harmonic windows were obtained by employing different land uplift datasets, e.g. the truncated geoid model with a harmonic window between degrees 10 to 39 and 10 to 25 showed a maximum correlation with the GIA model ICE-6G (VM5a) and the combined land uplift rates, respectively. As shown in this study, the mantle viscosities of 1.6×1022 Pa s and 0.9×1022 Pa s for a depth of 200  to 650  km are obtained using ICE-6G (VM5a) model and the combined land uplift model, respectively, and the GIA-related gravity potential signal.

  • 7E.3: Urban Energy Balance from Space: the URBANFLUXES Project
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 10th International Conference on Urban Climate/14th Symposium on the Urban Environment, New York, US, August 2018.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The H2020-Space project URBANFLUXES investigated the potential of Copernicus Sentinels to retrieve the key components of the Urban Energy Budget (UEB). The Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer (DART) model was used to estimate the net all-wave radiation fluxes. The storage heat flux was determined using the Element Surface Temperature Method (ESTM) after being modified to use satellite observations. Turbulent sensible and latent heat fluxes were estimated with the Aerodynamic Resistance Method (ARM). The fluxes were evaluated with in-situ flux measurements in London, Basel and Heraklion. URBANFLUXES prepared the ground for further innovative exploitation of Earth Observation data in climate variability studies scales and emerging applications (sustainable urban planning, mitigation technologies) to benefit climate change mitigation and adaptation. The wide range of data produced (e.g. land cover, vegetation phenology, surface morphology) have a much large possible applications. This project website (http://urbanfluxes.eu) provides more detailed information.
