  • Carbon dioxide reduction mechanism on Ru-based electrocatalysts [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) : insights from first-principles theory

    • Solar fuel production through the so-called artificial photosynthesis has attracted a great deal of attention to the development of a new world energy matrix that is renewable and environmentally friendly. This process is characterized by light absorption with enough photon energy to generate conduction electrons, which drive the carbon dioxide reduction to produce organic fuels. It is also common to couple Ru-complex electrocatalysts to form a more efficient and selective hybrid system for this application. In this work, we have undertaken a thorough investigation of the redox reaction mechanism of Ru-based electrocatalysts by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods under the experimental conditions that have been previously reported. More specifically, we have studied the electrochemistry and catalytic activity of the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) coordination complex. Our theoretical assessment supports the following catalytic cycle: (i) [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) is transformed into [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)](0) upon two-electron reduction and CO release; (ii) [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)](0) is protonated to form the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)H](+) hydride complex; (iii) CO2 is activated by the hydride complex through an electrophilic addition to form the [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(OCHO)](+) intermediate; (iv) the resulting formic acid ligand is released in solution; and, finally, (v) the CO ligand is reattached to the complex to recover the initial [Ru(bpy)(2)(CO)(2)](2+) catalyst.

  • COMPARE analysis of the toxicity of an iminoquinone derivative of the imidazo[5,4-f]benzimidazoles with NAD(P)H:quinone Oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) activity and computational docking of quinones as NQO1 substrates

    • Synthesis and cytotoxicity of imidazo[5,4-f]benzimidazolequinones and iminoquinone derivatives is described, enabling structure-activity relationships to be obtained. The most promising compound (an iminoquinone derivative) has undergone National Cancer Institute (NCI) 60 cell line (single and five dose) screening, and using the NCI COMPARE program, has shown correlation to NQO1 activity and to other NQO1 substrates. Common structural features suggest that the iminoquinone moiety is significant with regard to NQO1 specificity. Computational docking into the active site of NQO1 was performed, and the first comprehensive mitomycin C (MMC)-NQO1 docking study is presented. Small distances for hydride reduction and high binding affinities are characteristic of MMC and of iminoquinones showing correlations with NQO1 via COMPARE analysis. Docking also indicated that the presence of a substituent capable of hydrogen bonding to the His194 residue is important in influencing the orientation of the substrate in the NQO1 active site, leading to more efficient reduction.   • High-performance all-polymer solar cells enabled by a novel low bandgap non-fully conjugated polymer acceptor

    • Anon-fully conjugated polymer as a new class of acceptor materials has shown some advantages over its small molecular counterpart when used in photoactive layers for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), despite a low power conversion efficiency (PCE) caused by its narrow absorption spectra. Herein, a novel non-fully conjugated polymer acceptor PFY-2TS with a low bandgap of similar to 1.40 eV was developed, via polymerizing a large pi-fused small molecule acceptor (SMA) building block (namely YBO) with a non-conjugated thioalkyl linkage. Compared with its precursor YBO, PFY-2TS retains a similar low bandgap but a higher LUMO level. Moreover, compared with the structural analog of YBO-based fully conjugated polymer acceptor PFY-DTC, PFY-2TS shows similar absorption spectrum and electron mobility, but significantly different molecular crystallinity and aggregation properties, which results in optimal blend morphology with a polymer donor PBDB-T and better device physical processes in all-PSCs. As a result, PFY-2TS-based all-PSCs achieved a PCE of 12.31% with a small energy loss of 0.56 eV enabled by the reduced non-radiative energy loss (0.24 eV), which is better than that of 11.08% for the PFY-DTC-based ones. Our work clearly demonstrated that non-fully conjugated polymers as a new class of acceptor materials are very promising for the development of high-performance all-PSCs.

    • Recent years have seen an increasing interest in molecular electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Efficient hydrogen evolution would play an important role in a sustainable fuel economy, and molecular systems could serve as highly specific and tunable alternatives to traditional noble metal surface catalysts. However, molecular catalysts are currently mostly used in homogeneous setups, where quantitative evaluation of catalytic activity is non-standardized and cumbersome, in particular for multistep, multielectron processes. The molecular design community would therefore be well served by a straightforward model for prediction and comparison of the efficiency of molecular catalysts. Recent developments in this area include attempts at applying the Sabatier principle and the volcano plot concept - popular tools for comparing metal surface catalysts - to molecular catalysis. In this work, we evaluate the predictive power of these tools in the context of experimental operating conditions, by applying them to a series of tetraphenylporphyrins employed as molecular electrocatalysts of the HER. We show that the binding energy of H and the redox chemistry of the porphyrins depend solely on the electron withdrawing ability of the central metal ion, and that the thermodynamics of the catalytic cycle follow a simple linear free energy relation. We also find that the catalytic efficiency of the porphyrins is almost exclusively determined by reaction kinetics and therefore cannot be explained by thermodynamics alone. We conclude that the Sabatier principle, linear free energy relations and molecular volcano plots are insufficient tools for predicting and comparing activity of molecular catalysts, and that experimentally useful information of catalytic performance can still only be obtained through detailed knowledge of the catalytic pathway for each individual system.

    • The erythro form of the lignin model compound 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1,3-propanediol (1) was oxidized with laccase/ABTS, lead(IV) tetraacetate (LTA), lignin peroxidase/H2O2, cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) and Fenton's reagent. The product profiles obtained with the different oxidants were compared after separation, identification and quantification of the products using HPLC, UV-diode array detector and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in positive ionization mode. The oxidants generated different product profiles that reflected their different properties. Oxidation with laccase/ABTS resulted almost exclusively in formation of 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-propanone (2). Oxidation with LTA resulted in more 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (3) than ketone 2. Lignin peroxidase and CAN gave similar product profiles and aldehyde 3 was the predominant product (only small amounts of ketone 2 were formed). Oxidation with Fenton's reagent resulted in the formation of more aldehyde 3 than ketone 2 but the yields were very low. CAN served as an excellent model for the lignin peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation, while the laccase-mediator system, LTA and Fenton's reagent provided distinctly different product profiles. Erythro-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2,3-propanetriol was present among the products obtained on oxidation with LTA, lignin peroxidase, CAN and Fenton's reagent. The differences in redox potential between the oxidants afford an explanation of the diverse product patterns but other factors may also be of importance. The reactions leading to cleavage of the β-ether bond with formation of 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2,3-propanetriol (veratrylglycerol) were found to proceed without affecting the configuration at the β-carbon atom.

    • Understanding the interactions and the solvent effects on the distribution of several species in equilibrium and how it can influence the 1H-NMR properties, spectroscopy (UV-vis absorption), and the acid–base equilibria can be especially challenging. This is the case of a bis-bidentate bridging ligand bis(2-pyridyl)-benzo-bis(imidazole), where the two pyridyl and four imidazolyl nitrogen atoms can be protonated in different ways, depending on the solvent, generating many isomeric/tautomeric species. Herein, we report a combined theoretical–experimental approach based on a sequential quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics procedure that was successfully applied to describe in detail the acid–base characterization and its effects on the electronic properties of such a molecule in solution. The calculated free-energies allowed the identification of the main species present in solution as a function of the solvent polarity, and its effects on the magnetic shielding of protons (1H-NMR chemical shifts), the UV-vis absorption spectra, and the acid–base equilibrium constants (pKas) in aqueous solution. Three acid–base equilibrium constants were experimentally/theoretically determined (pKa1 = 1.3/1.2, pKa2 = 2.1/2.2 and pKa5 = 10.1/11.3) involving mono-deprotonated and mono-protonated cis and trans species. Interestingly, other processes with pKa3 = 3.7 and pKa4 = 6.0 were also experimentally determined and assigned to the protonation and deprotonation of dimeric species. The dimerization of the most stable neutral species was investigated by Monte Carlo simulations and its electronic effects were considered for the elucidation of the UV-vis absorption bands, revealing transitions mainly with the charge-transfer characteristic and involving both the monomeric species and the dimeric species. The good matching of the theoretical and experimental results provides an atomistic insight into the solvent effects on the electronic properties of this bis-bidentate bridging ligand.

    • Homology models of CYP26B1 (cytochrome P450RAI2) and CYP26B1 spliced variant were derived using the crystal structure of cyanobacterial CYP120A1 as template for the model building. The quality of the homology models generated were carefully evaluated, and the natural substrate all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA), several tetralone-derived retinoic acid metabolizing blocking agents (RAMBAs), and a well-known potent inhibitor of CYP26B1 (R115866) were docked into the homology model of full-length cytochrome P450 26B1. The results show that in the model of the full-length CYP26B1, the protein is capable of distinguishing between the natural substrate (atRA), R115866, and the tetralone derivatives. The spliced variant of CYP26B1 model displays a reduced affinity for atRA compared to the full-length enzyme, in accordance with recently described experimental information.

  • Exploring Metastable Phases During Lithiation of Organic Battery Electrode Materials

    • In this work, the Li-ion insertion mechanism in organic electrode materials is investigated through the lens of atomic-scale models based on first-principles theory. Starting with a structural analysis, the interplay of density functional theory with evolutionary and potential-mapping algorithms is used to resolve the crystal structure of the different (de)lithiated phases. These methods elucidate different lithiation reaction pathways and help to explore the formation of metastable phases and predict one- or multi-electron reactions, which are still poorly understood for organic intercalation electrodes. The cathode material dilithium 2,5-oxyterephthalate (operating at 2.6 V vs. Li/Li+) is investigated in depth as a case study, owing to its rich redox chemistry. When compared with recent experimental results, it is demonstrated that metastable phases with peculiar ring-ring molecular interactions are more likely to be controlling the redox reactions thermodynamics and consequently the battery voltage.

  • Unveiling the Interfacial Effects for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on MoS2/WTe2 Hybrid Structures

    • Using the MoS2-WTe2 heterostructure as a model system combined with electrochemical microreactors and density function theory calculations, it is shown that heterostructured contacts enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of monolayer MoS2. Two possible mechanisms are suggested to explain this enhancement: efficient charge injection through large-area heterojunctions between MoS2 and WTe2 and effective screening of mirror charges due to the semimetallic nature of WTe2. The dielectric screening effect is proven minor, probed by measuring the HER activity of monolayer MoS2 on various support substrates with dielectric constants ranging from 4 to 300. Thus, the enhanced HER is attributed to the increased charge injection into MoS2 through large-area heterojunctions. Based on this understanding, a MoS2/WTe2 hybrid catalyst is fabricated with an HER overpotential of -140 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), a Tafel slope of 40 mV dec(-1), and long stability. These results demonstrate the importance of interfacial design in transition metal dichalcogenide HER catalysts. The microreactor platform presents an unambiguous approach to probe interfacial effects in various electrocatalytic reactions.

    • “Water-in-polymer salt” electrolytes (WiPSEs) based on potassium polyacrylate (PAAK) belong to a new family of “water-in-salt” electrolytes that is envisioned as a potential solution for large-scale supercapacitors to balance the electric grid at short time scales. The WiPSEs display a broad electrochemical stability window up to 3 V, yet they are nonflammable and provide high ionic conductivity (100 mS/cm) as required in high-power devices. However, the transport of matter in PAAK-based WiPSEs has not been studied. In this work, we have extensively characterized PAAK by spectroscopic methods such as Raman spectroscopy and NMR diffusometry to determine the state of water and elucidate the mechanism of ionic transport as well as its interplay with water and polymer chain dynamics, which reveals that a significant proportion of the transport in WiPSEs is attributed to hydrated cations. The results are further supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Finally, the potential of WiPSEs based on PAAK is demonstrated in an activated carbon-based supercapacitor operating up to 2 V with reasonable self-discharge. This proof of concept shows promise for low-cost and large-scale supercapacitors.
