  • Solubilization of hydrophobic dyes in surfactant solutions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944. ; 6:2, s. 580-608
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the use of surfactants for solubilization of hydrophobic organic dyes (mainly solvent and disperse dyes) has been reviewed. The effect of parameters such as the chemical structures of the surfactant and the dye, addition of salt and of polyelectrolytes, pH, and temperature on dye solubilization has been discussed. Surfactant self-assemble into micelles in aqueous solution and below the concentration where this occurs-the critical micelle concentration (CMC)-there is no solubilization. Above the CMC, the amount of solubilized dye increases linearly with the increase in surfactant concentration. It is demonstrated that different surfactants work best for different dyes. In general, nonionic surfactants have higher solubilization power than anionic and cationic surfactants. It is likely that the reason for the good performance of nonionic surfactants is that they allow dyes to be accommodated not only in the inner, hydrocarbon part of the micelle but also in the headgroup shell. It is demonstrated that the location of a dye in a surfactant micelle can be assessed from the absorption spectrum of the dye-containing micellar solution.

  • Have covalent organic framework films revealed their full potential?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Crystals. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4352. ; 11:7
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Porous organic polymers provide high accessible surface areas, which make them attrac-tive for gas storage, separation, and catalysis. In addition to those classical usage areas, such compounds are particularly interesting for electronic applications since their high dimensional, electron-rich backbone provides advanced electronic and photophysical properties. However, their non-sol-uble nature is a challenge for their processability, especially in the case of film formation, hence their limited utilization in organic electronic devices so far. Nevertheless, there are several techniques presented in the literature to overcome that issue, most of which were on the crystalline porous organic polymers, namely covalent organic frameworks (COFs). In this perspective, the develop-ments on COF film formation and prospects for the improvements are discussed with suggestions to further their performances in organic electronics.

  • Investigating the potential of membranes formed by the vapor induced phase separation process
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Membrane Science. - : Elsevier. - 0376-7388 .- 1873-3123. ; 597
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • About 100 years ago, Zsigmondy and Bachmann invented a new method to induce phase inversion, the so-called vapor induced phase separation (VIPS). Since then many researchers have demonstrated this method in membrane fabrication. Here we present a review on membrane fabrication via VIPS to provide insights into membrane formation parameters in order to achieve desired properties for different applications. The key factors upon membrane preparation including solution parameters (i.e. polymer type and concentration, type of solvent, and additives) as well as operating parameters (i.e. exposure time, relative humidity, dissolution temperature, and vapor temperature) are comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, the design of a fouling-resistance membrane by the VIPS process has recently gained attention and is elaborated in details. The applications of the produced membranes via VIPS in water and wastewater treatment, gas separations, electrochemical applications (i.e. secondary batteries and supercapacitors) as well as in medical and biological applications are summarized and an outlook for future investigation is presented.

  • Electrochemical Detection and Characterization of Nanoparticles with Printed Devices
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biosensors. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-6374. ; 9:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovative methods to achieve the user-friendly, quick, and highly sensitive detection of nanomaterials are urgently needed. Nanomaterials have increased importance in commercial products, and there are concerns about the potential risk that they entail for the environment. In addition, detection of nanomaterials can be a highly valuable tool in many applications, such as biosensing. Electrochemical methods using disposable, low-cost, printed electrodes provide excellent analytical performance for the detection of a wide set of nanomaterials. In this review, the foundations and latest advances of several electrochemical strategies for the detection of nanoparticles using cost-effective printed devices are introduced. These strategies will equip the experimentalist with an extensive toolbox for the detection of nanoparticles of different chemical nature and possible applications ranging from quality control to environmental analysis and biosensing.

  • Atomic force microscopy probing interactions and microstructures of ionic liquids at solid surfaces
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 14:31, s. 11098-11128
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ionic liquids (ILs) are room temperature molten salts that possess preeminent physicochemical properties and have shown great potential in many applications. However, the use of ILs in surface-dependent processes, e.g. energy storage, is hindered by the lack of a systematic understanding of the IL interfacial microstructure. ILs on the solid surface display rich ordering, arising from coulombic, van der Waals, solvophobic interactions, etc., all giving near-surface ILs distinct microstructures. Therefore, it is highly important to clarify the interactions of ILs with solid surfaces at the nanoscale to understand the microstructure and mechanism, providing quantitative structure–property relationships. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) opens a surface-sensitive way to probe the interaction force of ILs with solid surfaces in the layers from sub-nanometers to micrometers. Herein, this review showcases the recent progress of AFM in probing interactions and microstructures of ILs at solid interfaces, and the influence of IL characteristics, surface properties and external stimuli is thereafter discussed. Finally, a summary and perspectives are established, in which, the necessities of the quantification of IL–solid interactions at the molecular level, the development of in situ techniques closely coupled with AFM for probing IL–solid interfaces, and the combination of experiments and simulations are argued.

  • Recent advances in triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion and singlet fission, towards solar energy applications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environmental Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1754-5692 .- 1754-5706. ; 15, s. 4982-5016
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar energy is an ample renewable energy resource, with photovoltaic (PV) technology enabling a direct route from light to electricity. Currently, PVs are limited in photon conversion efficiency, due in major part to spectral losses. Mitigation of these losses is therefore important, economically and environmentally. Two processes that aim to increase solar light utilisation are described herein. The first is triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC), through which two incoherent photons of low energy can produce one of higher energy, reducing below bandgap losses. Secondly, singlet fission (SF), through which two triplet states may be obtained from one initial singlet excited state, in theory allowing two electrons per photon in a PV, reducing thermalisation losses. These fields are often covered seperately, despite being the reverse processes of one another. This work aims to consolidate research in the two fields and highlight their similarities and common challenges, specifically those relevant to PV applications. Herein, we cover systems primarily based on organic small molecules (anthracene, rubrene, tetracene, pentacene), and detail the fabrication of functional materials containing them (MOFs, gels, SAMs on TiO2, thin evaporated and solution cast films, and cavities). We further offer our recommendations for the focus of future work in both the TTA and SF fields, and discuss the need to address current limitations such as poor triplet diffusion, limited charge injection to PVs, and material stability. Specifically, one could do this by cherry picking ideas from other research fields, for example photosensitisers for photodynamic therapy could be used as TTA sensitisers, and molecules having a considerable excited state aromaticity could be considered as SF materials. We hope this review may aid development towards the end goal of an efficient PV, incorporating either, or both, SF and TTA-UC materials.

  • Harnessing the unique properties of MXenes for advanced rechargeable batteries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: JPhys Energy. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7655. ; 3:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, two-dimensional MXenes have been emerged as potential electrode materials for rechargeable batteries due to their unique properties such as exceptional safety, significant interlayer spacing, environmental flexibility, large surface area, high electrical conductivity, and excellent thermal stability. This review examined all of the recent advances in the field of MXenes and their composites (hybrid structures), which are found to be useful for the electrochemical applications of advanced rechargeable batteries. The main focus of this review is on metal-ion batteries and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. It is intended to show that the combination of recent improvements in the synthesis and characterization, greater control of the interlayer distance, and new MXene composites, together serve as an emerging and potential way for energy storage applications.

  • Coordination polymers for energy transfer: Preparations, properties, sensing applications, and perspectives
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Coordination chemistry reviews. - : Elsevier. - 0010-8545 .- 1873-3840. ; 284, s. 206-235
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review highlights the recent progress of bulk and nanoscale coordination polymer (CP) materials forenergy transfer. Artificial light-harvesting materials with efficient energy transfer are practically usefulfor a variety of applications including photovoltaic, white emitting devices, and sensors. In the pastdecades CP (aka Metal-organic framework, MOF) has experienced rapid development due to a multitude of applications, including catalyst, gas storage and separations, non-linear optics, luminescence, and soon. Recent research has shown that CP is a very promising light-harvesting platform because the energytransfers can occur between different ligands, from ligand to metal centers, or from MOF skeleton to guestspecies. This review comprehensively surveyed synthetic approaches to light-harvesting CPs, and postfunctionalization. Sensing applications and achievements in energy-transfer CP nanoparticles and thinfilms were also discussed.
