  • Construction of n-Lie algebras and n-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0022-2488 .- 1089-7658. ; 52:12, s. 123502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As n-ary operations, generalizing Lie and Poisson algebras, arise in many different physical contexts, it is interesting to study general ways of constructing explicit realizations of such multilinear structures. Generically, they describe the dynamics of a physical system, and there is a need of understanding their quantization. Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras provide a framework that might be an appropriate setting in which n-Lie algebras (n-ary Nambu-Lie algebras) can be deformed, and their quantization studied. We present a procedure to construct (n + 1)-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras from n-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras equipped with a generalized trace function. It turns out that the implications of the compatibility conditions, that are necessary for this construction, can be understood in terms of the kernel of the trace function and the range of the twisting maps. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of defining (n + k)-Lie algebras from n-Lie algebras and a k-form satisfying certain conditions. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. • Encountering Proportional Reasoning During a Single Algebra Lesson: A Microgenetic Analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Electronic Journal of Mathematics Education. - Eastbourne, United Kingdom : Modestum Publishing Ltd. - 1306-3030. ; 17:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case study explores how 12-13-year-old students encounter proportional reasoning while working with geometric patterning tasks using concrete materials. The focus is on the students’ use of spontaneous concepts when first dealing with such patterns in the context of collaborative work. Based on video recordings of a single lesson, a microgenetic analysis was performed to identify students’ learning trajectories, starting with students familiarizing themselves with pattern structure, followed by engagement in proportional reasoning, and ending with students perceiving a new technique to handle a situation where proportional reasoning did not suffice. While some student groups were able to move along the whole trajectory, most groups, when facing challenges, regressed to simpler techniques. The results provide new insights into students’ learning trajectories, which can be used to support students’ progress in the context of student-teacher interaction.

  • The Chicken Braess Paradox
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Magazine. - : Taylor and Francis Inc.. - 0025-570X .- 1930-0980. ; 92:3, s. 213-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary.: The Braess Paradox is the counterintuitive fact that creation of a shortcut may make travel slower. As each driver seeks to minimize his/her travel time, the shortcut may become so popular that it causes congestion elsewhere in the road network, thereby increasing the travel time for everyone. We extend the paradox by considering a shortcut that is a single-lane but two-way street. The conflict about which drivers get to use the single-lane shortcut is an example of a game theoretic situation known as Chicken, which merges with the Braess Paradox into the novel Chicken Braess Paradox: meeting traffic may make travel quicker.

  • What games support the evolution of an ingroup bias?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Theoretical Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-5193 .- 1095-8541. ; 373, s. 100-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an increasing wealth of models trying to explain the evolution of group discrimination and an ingroup bias. This paper sets out to systematically investigate the most fundamental assumption in these models: in what kind of situations do the interactions take place? What strategic structures - games - support the evolution of an ingroup bias? More specifically, the aim here is to find the prerequisites for when a bias also with respect to minimal groups - arbitrarily defined groups void of group-specific qualities - is selected for, and which cannot be ascribed to kin selection.Through analyses and simulations of minimal models of two-person games, this paper indicates that only some games are conducive to the evolution of ingroup favouritism. In particular, this class does not contain the prisoners׳ dilemma, but it does contain anti-co-ordination and co-ordination games. Contrasting to the prisoners׳ dilemma, these are games where it is not a matter of whether to behave altruistically, but rather one of predicting what the other person will be doing, and where I would benefit from you knowing my intentions. In anti-co-ordination games, on average, not only will agents discriminate between groups, but also in such a way that their choices maximise the sum of the available payoffs towards the ingroup more often than towards the outgroup. And in co-ordination games, even if agents do manage to co-ordinate with the whole population, they are more likely to co-ordinate on the socially optimal equilibrium within their group. Simulations show that this occurs most often in games where there is a component of risk-taking, and thus trust, involved. A typical such game is the stag hunt or assurance game.

  • Transposition of Knowledge: Encountering Proportionality in an Algebra Task
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1571-0068 .- 1573-1774. ; 16:3, s. 559-579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on an analysis of the process in which knowledge to be taught was transposed into knowledge actually taught, concerning a task including proportional relationships in an algebra setting in a grade 6 classroom. We identified affordances and constraints of the task by describing the mathematical praxeology of the two different types of knowledge exposed, in the task as such and in the activity of the classroom. Through the teacher’s explicit process of reasoning, modeling, revising, solving, and repeatedly explaining the task, we found that the transposition of knowl- edge was seriously affected by the contextualization of the task. Modeling word problems about everyday situations has its limitations and can, as in this case, make the problem unsolvable unless it is accepted as a Btextbook task^ disguised as real but adjusted to the norms of school mathematics. Such constraints may obscure mathe- matical ideas afforded by the task. We conclude that learning opportunities embedded in a task do not necessarily surface when a task is treated in a classroom setting

  • Explicit Estimators of Parameters in the Growth Curve Model with Linearly Structured CovarianceMatrices
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multivariate Analysis. - : Elsevier BV. - 0047-259X .- 1095-7243. ; 101:5, s. 1284-1295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Estimation of parameters in the classical Growth Curve model when the covariance matrix has some specific linear structure is considered. In our examples maximum likelihood estimators can not be obtained explicitly and must rely on optimization algorithms. Therefore explicit estimators are obtained as alternatives to the maximum likelihood estimators. From a discussion about residuals, a simple non-iterative estimation procedure is suggested which gives explicit and consistent estimators of both the mean and the linear structured covariance matrix.

  • Combinatorial invariance of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials for fixed point free involutions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics. - : SPRINGER. - 0925-9899 .- 1572-9192. ; 47:4, s. 543-560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When acts on the flag variety of , the orbits are in bijection with fixed point free involutions in the symmetric group . In this case, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials can be indexed by pairs of fixed point free involutions , where denotes the Bruhat order on . We prove that these polynomials are combinatorial invariants in the sense that if is a poset isomorphism of upper intervals in the Bruhat order on fixed point free involutions, then for all v amp;gt;= u.

  • Topology of posets with special partial matchings
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advances in Mathematics. - : Academic Press. - 0001-8708 .- 1090-2082. ; 348, s. 255-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Special partial matchings (SPMs) are a generalisation of Brentis special matchings. Let a pircon be a poset in which every non-trivial principal order ideal is finite and admits an SPM. Thus pircons generalise Mariettis zircons. We prove that every open interval in a pircon is a PL ball or a PL sphere. It is then demonstrated that Bruhat orders on certain twisted identities and quasiparabolic W-sets constitute pircons. Together, these results extend a result of Can, Cherniaysky, and Twelbeck, prove a conjecture of Hultman, and confirm a claim of Rains and Vazirani.

  • A Dantzig-Wolfe Reformulation for AutomatedAircraft Arrival Scheduling in TMAs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on the Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling, PATAT 2024. - 9780992998462 ; , s. 268-271
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we introduce a Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation to compute aircraft arrival routes in a terminal maneuvering area (TMA) where the aircraft are flying according to theoptimal continuous-descent-operation (CDO) speed profile with idle thrust. This model assumes fixed entry times for all aircraft and a single separation time that is independent of wake-turbulence categories.Preliminary experiments show that this approach leads to significantly reduced runtimes. Moreover, the results indicate the possiblity of extending the reformulation to the full model and applying it to address additional practical considerations, such as wind effects in the future.
