  • The Posthumanities Hub Webinars and Workshops Spring 2023 : Creative with Concepts
  • 2023
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Posthumanities Hub round-table workshop On "Creative with concepts"Speakers: Prof. Nanna Verhoeff (Utrecht University), Prof. Iris van der Tuin (Utrecht University), Dr Janna Holmstedt (Sweden’s Historical Museums), Prof. Christina Fredengren (Uppsala University), Prof. Paola Ruiz Moltó (Universitat Jaume) & Prof. Cecilia Åsberg (LiU) with friends.11th May, 2023 on-location workshop at Linköping UniversityEngaging with what concepts can do, we explore in this experimental round-table workshop what happens in the arts and creative humanities when "theory words" (concepts) work across different research practices. We move through a set of concepts, like, "assembling", "cartography", "curation", "dirt", "following", "micrology", "unlearning" and "wonder" (all from Iris van der Tuin & Nanna Verhoeff's (2022) Critical Concepts for the Creative Humanities, see below how to download it!). Such concepts are put to work differently across the invited speakers' various research projects. Come meet artistic research on soil and sustainability; museum ecologies and heritage research on past and future waste sites of the present Antropocene; imaginative teacher education with art, science and tiny, tiny critters, as well as other forms of blue/ environmental/ feminist/ more-than-human and creative humanities.

  • Greenhouse Doppelgänger Deposed : An Indexical Prototype about Parastructures, Anarchives, and the Social (Hyperobjective) Pedestal
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Architecture in Effect: Volume 1: Rethinking the Social in Architecture. - Barcelona : ACTAR. - 9781940291994
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Greenhouse is an opaque manifold of meanings. The opacity is not just the result of a layering that occurs when considering its many definitions. It is more so the result of the suppressed colonial violence that is implicit in its technological instrumentalization. This mythical violence, of willfully transplanting the exotic, is at the heart of allother compound terms and subsets of ‘greenhouse’. I have been working on how this opacity obscures a range of forces that shape the environment. More specifically, I amexploring how these opaque forces affect, and may be perceived through, the forms and languages of sculptural and spatial production beyond prescribed visual or imagined outcomes. The work you will encounter here is then a probe to test how the violent opacity of greenhouse may be demystified by shaping an index as potential format for dematerialized display.

  • MIUN Research Exhibition : Utställningsproduktion i universitetsbibliotekets fysiska och webbaserade rum
  • 2023

  • EP9 Starlight Reserves
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård, GIBCA Extended, 2023-08-19.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The sculpture EP9 Starlight Reserves was installed in Amerikadammen in Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård and part of GIBCA Extended 2023. This work is situated in the expanded field of sculpture, where the negotiation with a specific situation plays a central role in material investigations of environmental and sustainability concerns. The shape and title of the sculpture derive from the container of old batteries, "Exposed Pallet 9," which the International Space Station launched into space in 2021 to circulate around the Earth for 2-4 years before entering the Earth's atmosphere and hopefully burn up. [1] Commercial interests, colonization, and tourism led by rich nations and private companies contribute to the increase of space debris. The main inquiry of this research project is how artistic work, through visualization in sculptural form, can draw attention to scientific observations and advocacy in establishing international environmental space law concerning space debris. By using recycled plastic from electronic scrap for the large-scale IRBAM printing of the sculpture, the work highlights the potential for sustainable and ephemeral materials in sculptural production to promote environmental awareness and question the validity of the standard requirement for "permanence" in public sculpture. 3D printing in collaboration with Samuel Johansson and Woodrow Wiest RISE – AM center in Mölndal, Sweden with in-kind funding. Supported by Göteborgs Stad Kultur och Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård. [1] Mike Wall, “Space station tosses 2.9-ton hunk of space junk overboard. • Designing dynamic textile patterns
  • 2010
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Designing Dynamic Textile Patterns Progress in chemistry, fibres and polymers technology provides textile designers with new expressive materials, making it possible to design dynamic textile patterns, where several different expressions are inherent in the same textile, textiles that, for example, could alternate between a striped and checkered pattern. Textiles are traditionally designed and produced to keep a given, static expression during their life cycle; a striped pattern is supposed to keep its stripes. In the same way textile designers are trained to design for static expressions, where patterns and decorations are meant to last in a specific manner. However, things are changing. The textile designer now deals also with a new raw material, a dynamic textile, ready to be further designed, developed and/or programmed, depending on functional context. This transformation in practice is not an easy one for the designers. Designers need to learn how to design with these new materials and their specific qualities, to be able to develop the full expressional potential inherent in “smart textiles design”. The aim of this thesis is to display, and discuss, a methodology for designing dynamic textile patterns. So far, something that mainly has been seen in different experimental and conceptual prototypes, in artistic expressions and for commercial efforts etc. In terms of basic experimental research this thesis explores the turn in textile design practice through a series of design experiments with focus on contributing to identifying and characterizing new design variables, new design methods and new design techniques as a foundation for dynamic textile patterns.

  • Deep Learning With DAGs
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social science theories often postulate causal relationships among a set of variables or events. Although directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are increasingly used to represent these theories, their full potential has not yet been realized in practice. As non-parametric causal models, DAGs require no assumptions about the functional form of the hypothesized relationships. Nevertheless, to simplify the task of empirical evaluation, researchers tend to invoke such assumptions anyway, even though they are typically arbitrary and do not reflect any theoretical content or prior knowledge. Moreover, functional form assumptions can engender bias, whenever they fail to accurately capture the complexity of the causal system under investigation. In this article, we introduce causal-graphical normalizing flows (cGNFs), a novel approach to causal inference that leverages deep neural networks to empirically evaluate theories represented as DAGs. Unlike conventional approaches, cGNFs model the full joint distribution of the data according to a DAG supplied by the analyst, without relying on stringent assumptions about functional form. In this way, the method allows for flexible, semi-parametric estimation of any causal estimand that can be identified from the DAG, including total effects, conditional effects, direct and indirect effects, and path-specific effects. We illustrate the method with a reanalysis of Blau and Duncan’s (1967) model of status attainment and Zhou’s (2019) model of conditional versus controlled mobility. To facilitate adoption, we provide open-source software together with a series of online tutorials for implementing cGNFs. The article concludes with a discussion of current limitations and directions for future development.

  • Manners, Parameters and the Gay Sciences : Realities from the Paramannerist Treatise
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Space Matters. - Vienna : Ambra Verlag. - 9783990435632 - 9783990435762 ; , s. 120-137
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper I aim to remind a brief projection about the inseparable difference between mental and physical space. This projection intends to thicken the aesthetics of sustainability by rejecting social Darwinism as the normalization of chaos and the irrational by way of evolutionary teleology and technocratic domination. To do so, I describe a mannerist recurrence in cultural production and how I hope it may inform a revitalized movement beyond an age of mass industrialization, beyond claims of Parametricism. I argue that this move can be activated by revising Charles Peirce’s Infinite Community of Inquiry, and Gerald Raunig’s notion of Abstract Machines, as vehicles for anthropocentric cybernetics and contemporary ecology. This is not about metaphorical relations between the visual arts and the hard sciences, but to set forth a topological heuristic, an ongoing inquiry to further categorize aspects between the human and non-human worlds, reflecting through Nietzsche's idea of 'gay science.'

  • Solidarity Report : Two Witness Seminars on Danish and Swedish Welfare Housing in Crisis
  • 2024. - 1
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report documents the conversations that occurred during two seminars, “Caring for Plans: Narratives of the Parallel Society Package”, held at the Copenhagen Architecture Festival CAFx, October 17, 2021,1 and “Solidarity in Times of Repressive Politics: A Seminar on the Effects of the Concepts ‘Particularly/Vulnerable Areas’”, held at Folkets Husby, October 15, 2022, in the Stockholm suburb of Husby.Narratives about the “failure” of large-scale housing from the postwar decades are now guiding major physical, social, and economic changes in neighborhoods all over Europe. Denmark and Sweden have long been known for their welfare-state systems and benevolent housing policies. However, in recent years, both countries have enacted new national “anti-segregation” measures that call for major physical and social changes to neighborhoods built in the 1960s and 1970s. In these processes, the opinions of local communities and residents of the neighborhoods have seldom been heard. By working with “witness seminars,” a method adopted from oral history, it is our aim to foreground residents’ perspectives and how they have enacted solidarity and collective resistance to these measures.
