  • Defend, Retreat and Attack: Urban Waters and Valuation Practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Water Alternatives. - : Water Alternatives Association. - 1965-0175. ; 15:1, s. 175-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the river landscapes and concomitant values resulting from tensions between flood management and visions of a River City. The aim is to contribute to an understanding of the management of urban waters as valuation practices. We regard valuation practices as co-constitutive of current and future river landscapes. Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg, is located next to the sea, and the Göta River, Sweden’s largest water system, runs through it. Our empirical focus is on how this city approaches increasing risks of flooding. We explore three approaches that have been formulated in relation to flood management: defend, retreat and attack. We ask how these approaches are applied in the management of Göta River flooding and in the city’s vision of a future Gothenburg that embraces the river as a genuinely positive aspect of urban life. We present the case as a journey that takes us upstream from the river’s sea inlet port and through Gothenburg. During our kilometre by kilometre journey, the river’s appearance shifts. The varied river landscape mirrors the diversity in how its waters are valuated, both historically and in present times. The perception of urban waters is shaped by practices of valuation. These valuations are generative. They connect the value of water to other entities, actors, plans, activities and buildings, and they are thus key to the river landscapes that will eventually be realised. By way of conclusion, we identify a number of governance challenges that are particularly relevant to urban rivers.

  • User involvement in Swedish residential building projects : a stakeholder perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing and the Built Environment. - Dordrecht, Netherlands : Springer Netherlands. - 1566-4910 .- 1573-7772. ; 30:2, s. 313-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One factor influencing quality in the building industry is the ability of users, such as residents, to identify and express their requirements for the product, i.e. the residential building. However, the handling of communication with users in building projects has been insufficiently specified and studied. Drawing on a study of user involvement in building project design, production, and management, this paper examines user involvement in Swedish residential projects. To map current perceptions and approaches, building industry actors met in four focus groups. Group participants were asked to reflect on the definition of users, communication handling, how information from users is used, and challenges and opportunities in user involvement. Our initial emphasis was front-end activities, but focus group results revealed that user involvement was a continuous process extending from project initiation to evaluating the finished project as a basis for future projects. Discussions indicated confusion about who constituted users in various situations but, regardless of level of experience, focus group participants agreed on the importance and potential of user involvement and on the need for specific methods to acquire useful input.

  • Impact of panelist's age on the ease of swallow and sensory perception of texture-modified broccoli purees
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of sensory studies. - : John Wiley and Sons Inc. - 0887-8250 .- 1745-459X. ; 37:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swallowing disorders affect approximately 8% of the global population. It is more prevalent in the elderly, leading to malnutrition and dehydration. Different strategies have been investigated to design new texture-modified food products that would reduce or mitigate the suffering from these swallowing disorders. Despite the recent interest and research in this area, there are, however, still a lot of unknowns regarding the specific sensory insights by this targeted group. The aim of this work was to understand if the ease of swallow and related sensory characteristics are perceived differently by “young” and “elderly” healthy individuals. Broccoli purees with different textural properties were created by changing the fluid component (water or xanthan solution) or processing conditions. Samples were evaluated by an elderly panel (n = 19, average age = 68.9 years) and a young panel (n = 16, average age = 25.4 years). Multivariate data analysis strategies were used to understand the intrapanel sample discrimination and to compare between panels. Results showed a similar overall discrimination between samples between young and elderly panels. The use of xanthan improved the ease of swallow in both age groups. In the absence of xanthan gum, processing conditions determined the ease of swallow, which was related to the particle size distribution. Nevertheless, small differences were found between panels. For example, the elderly panel was more sensitive when discriminating samples based on the ease of swallow (p =.005). Therefore, panelist age seems to be relevant when designing tailored foods enhancing the ease of swallow for the elderly populations. Practical Applications: The present study highlights new insights on the relevance of age and sensory capabilities when designing new texture-modified food products. It also provides new insights regarding the key sensory attributes to consider and how these are affected by the type of food processing. © 2022 The Authors.

  • Nominated procurement and the indirect control of nominated sub-suppliers: Evidence from the Sri Lankan apparel supply chain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 127, s. 179-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and discusses nominated procurement as a means through which buyers select sub-suppliers to achieve sustainability compliance upstream in emerging economies' supply chains. Hence, it critically examines the ways buyers articulate nominated procurement and the unfolding supply chain consequences. Based on in-depth interviews and fieldwork in the Sri Lankan apparel supply chain, the findings indicate that buyers accomplish sustainability compliance among their sub-suppliers while prioritizing their own business agenda. In doing so, however, buyers perpetuate “suboptimal compliance” of raw material suppliers and “sandwiching” of direct suppliers as harmful consequences on the supply chain. These consequences link theoretically with commercial, geographical, compliance and extended-compliance pressure. This article contributes to the advancement of the Sustainable Supply Chain Management literature by theorizing about nominated procurement, direct and indirect pressure, and pointing to the supply chain consequences beyond achievements in sustainability compliance.

  • ORU2015 Örebro University Research Evaluation 2015 : Evaluation Report
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ORU2015 – Executive SummaryDuring 2015, all research performed from 2008 to 2014 at Örebro University, as well as research at Örebro University Hospital, has been evaluated. This report – ORU2015 – presents the background, planning and implementation of the research assessment and its results. Chapter I includes the panel evaluations, and chapter II presents the bibliometric data. Of the 38 subunits of evaluation, 8 are within the Faculty of Business, Science and Engineering, 17 are within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 7 within the Faculty of Medicine and Health, and 6 at Region Örebro County’s University Hospital. The evaluation had a meta-analytical approach (see Annex A), and the external multidisciplinary panel assessed the research in each subunit of evaluation (see Annex B). The panel’s evaluation material consisted of a research overview, documentation on academic staff and competence, as well as on funding, self-evaluations and bibliometric data. The self-evaluations by each subunit addressed (i) scientific quality and scientific impact, (ii) impact and outreach, (iii) internationalisation, and (iv) research – education interaction. Each overarching evaluation unit was also assessed, including a SWOT analysis, by the respective heads of schools and deans. Apart from the self-evaluations, the material was retrieved from the university databases, Web of Science and Academic Archive Online (DiVA). The subunits had the opportunity to update their research information for the research overview prior to making the material available to the panel. The fourteen panellists, representing economics, natural sciences and technology, humanities, social sciences, medicine and health sciences, met for two days in October at Örebro University for the evaluation discussions. The agreed evaluation statements were delivered shortly thereafter. The great variability in the subunits’ scientific practices, scale, and establishment had to be accounted for in the panel evaluations. The evaluation subunits range from very large (up to 60 researchers), to medium sized (about 20 researchers), and to quite small subunits (fewer than nine researchers). The points of reference for the panel’s statements were the (i) quality of research, (ii) research environment and infrastructure, (iii) scientific and social interaction and (iv) future potential. Gradings ranged between Excellent (5) and Insufficient (1). The key data in the bibliometric assessment was scientific impact, vitality, productivity and international visibility, as indicated by the publications of each subunit. It can be seen from the panel statement of a subunit and the matching bibliometric data that these two assessments correspond to a large extent, but not completely. It is concluded from the panel evaluation that there are Excellent (5), Very Good (4), Good (3), Sufficient (2), as well as Insufficient (1) subunits at the university. A majority of the fourteen subunits that performed well (grade 3 – 5) are medium-sized, whilst the majority of the sixteen weakly performing subunits (grade 1 – 2) are small in size. Of course, for the humanities and social sciences, the Web of Science data only contains output to a limited degree. Therefore data from DiVA has been used and compared as well. For some subunits this makes a difference, but of the 16 subunits that show a weak performance according to Web of Science data, ten also perform weakly as shown in DiVA. Only three of these subunits score Good and one Very Good in DiVA.It can be seen from ORU2015 that the research volume, especially expressed in scientific publications per year and citations, has roughly doubled since ÖRE2010. In 2014, the total number of publications in Web of Science by researchers at the university and the university hospital reached some 600 and the number of citations were 14,000 the same year. The ‘findings’ of ORU2015 provide an important basis for decisions by leaders at all levels of the university in terms of strategic planning, support, and development of the research for the future.

  • The effect of continuous levodopa treatment during the afternoon hours
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 139:1, s. 70-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate if patients with PD, who are treated with levodopa‐carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG), clinically worsen during the afternoon hours and if so, to evaluate whether this occurs in all LCIG‐treated patients or in a sub‐group of patients. Methods: Three published studies were identified and included in the analysis. All studies provided individual response data assessed on the treatment response scale (TRS) and patients were treated with continuous LCIG. Ninety‐eight patients from the three studies fulfilled the criteria. T‐tests were performed to find differences on the TRS values between the morning and the afternoon hours, linear mixed effect models were fitted on the afternoon hours’ evaluations to find trends of wearing‐off, and patients were classified into three TRS categories (meaningful increase in TRS, meaningful decrease in TRS, non ‐meaningful increase or decrease). Results: In all three studies significant statistical differences were found between the morning TRS values and the afternoon TRS values (p‐value <= 0.001 in all studies). The linear mixed effect models had significant negative coefficients for time in two studies, and 48 out of 98 patients (49%) showed a meaningful decrease of TRS during the afternoon hours. Conclusion: The results from all studies were consistent, both in the proportion of patients in the three groups and the value of TRS decrease in the afternoon hours. Based on these findings there seems to be a group of patients with predictable “off” behavior in the later parts of the day.

  • Does uncertainty make cost-benefit analyses pointless?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part A. - Stockholm : Elsevier BV. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 92, s. 195-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is widely used in public decision making on infrastructure investments. However, the demand forecasts, cost estimates, benefit valuations and effect assessments that are conducted as part of CBAs are all subject to various degrees of uncertainty. The question is to what extent CBAs, given such uncertainties, are still useful as a way to prioritize between infrastructure investments, or put differently, how robust the policy conclusions of CBA are with respect to uncertainties. Using simulations based on real data on national infrastructure plans in Sweden and Norway, we study how investment selection and total realized benefits change when decisions are based on CBA assessments subject to several different types of uncertainty. Our results indicate that realized benefits and investment selection are surprisingly insensitive to all studied types of uncertainty, even for high levels of uncertainty. The two types of uncertainty that affect results the most are uncertainties about investment cost and transport demand. Provided that decisions are based on CBA outcomes, reducing uncertainty is still worthwhile, however, because of the huge sums at stake. Even moderate reductions of uncertainties about unit values, investment costs, future demand and project effects may increase the realized benefits infrastructure investment plans by tens or hundreds of million euros. We conclude that, despite the many types of uncertainties, CBA is able to fairly consistently separate the wheat from the chaff and hence contribute to substantially improved infrastructure decisions.

  • The Stockholm Congestion-Charging Trial 2006 : Overview of the effects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part A. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 43:3, s. 240-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Stockholm congestion charging trial in 2006 demonstrated the effects of a full-scale time-differentiated urban road toll scheme. Improvements in travel times were large enough to be perceived by the general public. This was pivotal to the radical change of public attitudes that occurred during the trial and that resulted in a positive outcome of a subsequent referendum on a proposal for making the system permanent. This paper summarises the effects of the trial and analyses to what extent targets were met. Effects on congestion reduction were larger than anticipated, which also resulted in favourable economic and environmental effects. The trial showed that a single-cordon toll could affect traffic within a large area, i.e., not just close to the zone limits.
