  • Commercial pressure, local responsiveness and synergies in globalised engineering services
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 26th International Association for Management of Technology Conference, IAMOT 2017. ; , s. 166-174, s. 166-174
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how medium-size engineering service companies working traditionally in national markets have engaged with challenges of globalisation and competition from multinationals. The Nordic region has many smaller domestic engineering services companies in the industry, which are under pressure in their established national and wider international markets. The research uses mixed-methods with empirical data from a desk study of sector development supplemented by qualitative studies of individual companies. It also includes comparative case study analyses of two medium-size engineering service companies with headquarters in two different Scandinavian countries. Among the companies studied there is a plethora of strategies and diversification into other revenue generating activities. Mergers and acquisitions are the most important strategies among the largest companies. Also there are a number of network strategies involving local resources from sister companies etc. The case companies illustrate many of the findings. They both have a multidisciplinary profile in the Nordic region while establishing a more limited presence in North America and elsewhere in Northern Europe. They are also developing a global business focusing on separate areas such as large bridges, environmental consulting, developmental consulting and industrial engineering. The research reveals an array of different strategic positions that combine local, regional and global elements resulting in unique strategic “bundles”. The paper adds to strategic technology management concepts and approaches by identifying the strong role of emergent strategy moves made by senior managers in the companies. It complements established theory and practice concerning the Resource-Based View and Knowledge-Based View as well as on network operations and extended enterprises.

  • Sustainable Operations Management: Key Practices and Cases
  • 2023
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sustainable Operations Management applies the issues of sustainability to all strategic decisions of operations: capacity management, supply network, process technology, and development and organisation. This book extends the existing literature of operations management that for years has been paramount in creating economic value with little consideration of environment and social dimensions. Whilst based on robust theoretical frameworks, some developed by its own authors, the book is enriched by international case studies and real-world illustrations throughout, to demonstrate how this theory translates to practice. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and ends with a summary, activity and questions for discussion. Readers will gain a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge on how to manage operations for sustainability. They will learn the ways to formulate a sustainable operations strategy and the elements involved in managing tactical and operational activities to enhance sustainability performance over time. The book covers all aspects of the new business sustainability paradigm from an operations perspective, including sustainable development goals, the circular economy, digital transformation, and organisational structures.

  • Taking Engineering Services Offshore - The Scandinavian Experience
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Wu X, Shi Y, Du J and Guo B (Eds) “High Performance Manufacturing - Global Perspective”, Proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Global Manufacturing and China, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, UK.. - 9781902546186 ; , s. 155-159
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Offshoring” has become increasing attractive for European engineering consulting firms, either through the use of external resources (outsourcing) or by relocating internal activities (the captive arrangement of foreign direct investment). Consulting companies may experience lack of skilled personnel and or an increasing pressure on costs. Moreover countries like China and India provide highly qualified engineers at a relative low level of remuneration compared with their Western counterparts. The aim of this paper is to investigate the experiences of Scandinavian based consulting engineers concerning offshoring, which often begins with a single project, but early positive results and the production flexibility of many developing countries can quickly lead to a more profound collaboration and even to a strategic transformation of the Scandinavian firm. For its theoretical foundations the paper builds on international business and strategic management approaches. The empirical research uses desk research investigations of companies in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. An exploratory study focuses on a single case supplemented with a preliminary evaluation of the 30 largest consulting engineering companies in Scandinavia.

  • Intermediation for technology diffusion and user innovation in a developing rural economy : a social learning perspective
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 26:7–8, s. 645-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology intermediaries are seen as potent vehicles for addressing perennial problems in transferring technology from university to industry in developed and developing countries. This paper examines what constitutes effective user-end intermediation in a low-technology, developing economy context, which is an under-researched topic. The social learning in technological innovation framework is extended using situated learning theory in a longitudinal instrumental case study of an exemplar technology intermediation programme. The paper documents the role that academic-related research and advisory centres can play as intermediaries in brokering, facilitating and configuring technology, against the backdrop of a group of small-scale pisciculture businesses in a rural area of Colombia. In doing so, it demonstrates how technology intermediation activities can be optimized in the domestication and innofusion of technology amongst end-users. The design components featured in this instrumental case of intermediation can inform policy making and practice relating to technology transfer from university to rural industry. Future research on this subject should consider the intermediation components put forward, as well as the impact of such interventions, in different countries and industrial sectors. Such research would allow for theoretical replication and help improve technology domestication and innofusion in different contexts, especially in less-developed countries. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

  • Global Operations Management
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Operations Management. - 9781802201932 ; , s. 25-48
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter considers the factors that influence why companies and industries internationalise operations and use globalisation to pursue competitive operations strategies. It describes how, historically, industrialised economies have sought resources and exploited overseas markets and later offshored operations to optimise costs. It also explores why the concern has shifted towards resilience and sustainability in recognition of how natural events, as well as political and economic risks, can offset the benefits of globalising operations. The chapter examines how different forms of inter-firm relationship and ownership shape how global operations function, as well as considering how emerging country firms compete in entry markets. In this regard, digital technologies – and the transfer of technology and knowledge between developed and developing countries – is an important concern for transforming businesses. In the final section, we identify some ‘takeaway’ messages together with the implications for teaching and learning in operations management courses.
