  • A future without drivers? Comparing users', urban planners' and developers' assumptions, hopes, and concerns about autonomous vehicles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Transport Research Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1867-0717 .- 1866-8887. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study identifies and compares perceptions of autonomous vehicle (AV) implementation among three Swedish stakeholder groups: Future Users, Urban Planners, and Developers. Method: Semi-structured comparative focus groups were conducted separately with each of the three groups of stakeholders and the transcripts were analysed in broad themes using thematic analysis. Results: Assumptions, hopes, concerns, and direction of development were the main themes that emerged from the analysis. Assumptions included electrification of vehicles, changes in travel demand, and the need for regulations; Hopes included the idea that AVs will contribute to a more accessible and safer transport system; Concerns included overtrust in AV technology, a possible detrimental impact on the city in the form of congestion and higher demand for investments in infrastructure that could outcompete other modes of transport; and Direction of development and their own role, where the need for collaboration between stakeholders and implementation of AVs in connection with society’s needs were emphasised. Conclusions: AVs were seen to lead to both positive and negative consequences depending on implementation and the development of society. The study shows that dialogue between different stakeholders is lacking but it is desired for the inclusive implementation of AVs.

  • Target the Use Phase! Design for Sustainable Behaviour.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The 6th International Conference on Life Cycle Management in Gothenburg 2013. ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One approach to further decrease the environmental impact of products is to target the use phase. According to the Design for Sustainable Behaviour approach different design strategies can be used to enable a more sustainable use of products by influencing the user’s behaviour. The strategies suggested include matching products to users’ current behaviours, enlightening users, spurring or steering theusers towards more sustainable behaviours, and applying a force dimension to the products. Empirical studies demonstrate the feasibility of different strategies. However further knowledge is needed on which strategies to apply in which situations and for what problems.

  • Eco-driving: Drivers’ understanding of the concept and implications for future interventions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Transport Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-070X .- 1879-310X. ; 39, s. 48-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of the study was to explore dissemination of the concept of eco-driving among Swedish car drivers, with a special focus on the effects of the introduction of eco-driving into the driving school curriculum in 2007. Nine new drivers educated according to this curriculum were compared with nine experienced drivers with regards to their understanding and practise of eco-driving. The results show that a majority of the drivers had heard about 'eco-driving' but that their understanding of the concept differed considerably. Their interpretation can be categorised into three levels: operational, tactical, and strategic eco-driving. Differences were found between experienced and new drivers: new drivers' understanding concerned the operational level, eco-driving as a technique, and had clearly been shaped by the driving education. Experienced drivers' interpretation of eco-driving was broader and included strategic and tactical decisions, such as choice of car, route choice and maintenance. Their understanding was shaped by various sources including experience and media coverage. Each individual driver's interpretation of eco-driving mostly comprised one level in the hierarchy, resulting in lock-in effects reducing their perceived action space. This perceived limited action space clashed with the motivation they felt to act, creating problems. Hence, efforts should be made to enhance the perceived action space.

  • Developing the ‘Service’ in Mobility as a Service: Experiences from a Field Trial of an Innovative Travel Brokerage
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Moving Forward: Innovative Solutions for Tomorrow's Mobility. Proceedings of the 6th Transport Research Arena TRA, Warsaw, Poland, April 18-21, 2016. - : Elsevier BV. ; 14, s. 3265-3273
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents some of the findings from the trial and evaluation of an example of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). The service, UbiGo, was developed within the Go:Smart project in Gothenburg, Sweden. In total 195 individuals in 83 households became paying customers over a period of six months. Overall, outcome of the trial was positive, i.e. the service was used and the customers were satisfied, more so than with their previous travel solution. Based on questionnaires and interviews, key service attributes were identified, including the ‘transportation smorgasbord’ concept, simplicity, improved access and flexibility, convenience, and economy. It is argued that successful implementation of MaaS requires careful consideration of these design attributes. However, MaaS relies on cooperation and collaboration, on the notion of a co-operative and interconnected transport system (including services, infrastructure, information, and payment), where boundaries between not only transport modes are blurred but also between public and private operators. The evaluation of UbiGo indicated that the main obstacles to further dissemination of MaaS may be found within and between service providing companies and organisations in terms of, e.g. regulations and institutional barriers.
