  • Professional voices on risk and accidents in home care – a Swedish survey study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Facilities. - 0263-2772. ; 38:374, s. 218-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this study is to find out what knowledge and experience of occupational therapists, personal assistants and public health nurses/nurses in Sweden can contribute concerning the vulnerability of residents to injury in different residential care-settings. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on a online survey. A total of 832 individuals responded to the survey. The data was analysed from a mixed-method approach, using descriptive statistics, correlations and textual-analysis. Findings –More than one in four representatives of these professions had witnessed accidents. The results show that bedrooms and bathrooms are the rooms in which accidents are most likely to occur in homes. Research limitations/implications – One limitation of the study is that the impact of educational initiatives on the different professions was not investigated, so it is not possible to ascertain what effect this may have had on risk identification and accident prevention measures in residential care-settings. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no prior study of these issues has been conducted. This study is deemed to have significant social benefit because of the steadily increasing need for care in residential settings. No other study has addressed the importance of the physical environment in this context. Collaborations involving researchers from various disciplines, professional organizations and public and private sector employers involved in personal assistance have contributed specific knowledge.

  • Funktionshinderrörelse och forskare tillsammans i undersökning: Enkla åtgärder förebygger ohälsa och skador i bomiljön.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Fastighetsfakta - Tidningen för fastighetsägare. - 2000-9976. ; :4

  • (In-)equality before the law - house adapting policy in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Sweden approximately one million individuals have some form of disability (Bonander et al., 2014),and a recent survey of Swedish living conditions found that disabilities are more frequently diagnosed in women compared to men, with the only exception to that being hearing loss (Swedish Agency for Participation, 2015). This paper will discuss the government policy regarding housing adaption in Sweden by combining two political perspectives: housing politics and disability politics. In Sweden the process of residential adaptation is legislated and also the right to have support to enabling the individual to maintain an independent life, where the individual feels safe and has improved accessibility (The Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairment (LSS),1993; The Social Service Act (SoL), 2001). However, the interpretation of the law on a municipal level is still unequal, and not all those in need of or house adaptation are receiving it (The National Board of Housing and Planning, 2014; The National Board of Health and Welfare, 2015). The paper will analyze court documents from Western Sweden related to appeals on house adaptions for the age group 18-25 years during 2010-2016. This selection also problematize The UN statement (2006) about “The right to life, freedom and personal safety’ for people living with disabilities”, the transaction from youth to adult and the importance of the first apartment as a part of independent living. The aim is to highlight the discrepancy between- and within cases of approved/denied housing adaption in the court. The upcoming results of the study will contribute to a discussion regarding the relation between design and active living, but also the importance of design as a facilitator or hinderer for independency.

  • Rethinking Injury Events. Explorations in Spatial Aspects and Situational Prevention Strategies
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation employs a holistic approach to injuries in everyday settings. It examines spatial aspects of adolescents’ injury events in residential situations, school situations, and suicidal situations, seeking to throw light on any reciprocal influence between situated activity and the physical environment in such events. Thus far, research has generally neglected to pay sufficient attention to everyday injuries and the more mundane sites where they occur. Previous studies on the topic have, moreover, been predominantly mono-disciplinary. Due to the complexity of injury research more broadly and injury prevention more specifically, this dissertation makes a conscious effort to go beyond such limitations. Applying an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary focus, it also aims to contribute to research on social sustainability more in general.    The more theoretical aspects of the research are geared to providing a better understanding of injury events as something explicable and situated, that is to say, as neither random nor unpreventable. Towards this end, core concepts of architectural research are brought to bear on the interrelationship between humans, objects, and contexts (cf. Love, 2002), defined for the purposes of this dissertation as socio-spatial practice. From this perspective, injury events are then looked at as something resulting from the convergence of factors addressed by the key concepts just named, as something caused by elements traceable to routine or situational activities (cf. Cohen & Felson, 1979; Wikström, 2011). Analysing injury events within this conceptual framework, the causal mechanisms and emergent processes behind injury events can be not only identified, but also prevented, through the use of situational prevention strategies. What this implies is the translation of, mainly, the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) approach into Injury Prevention through Environmental Design (IPTED). The research here is conducted using a mixed-method approach producing qualitative findings and quantitative data, so as to bridge the gap between the “how” and the “why” (cf. Clarke et al., 2015:13f.; Katz, 2001).    The results put forth in this dissertation suggest situational prevention specifically aimed at spatial aspects to be a promising approach to injury prevention, having the capability to reduce the occurrence of injury events. In private residential settings, however, the strategy showed itself to be more limited in its efficiency, being more effective when applied in semi-private settings such as building entrances/ lobbies. A still more effective context for it was found to be institutional settings: in them the spatial aspect appeared to be of great importance in relation to injury situations and the degree of visibility. In schools, for instance, the results pointed out to a close relationship between the injury situation, the spatial organization, and the social organization. In such settings, certain injuries tended to cluster spatially due to the organization of day-to-day activities. Finally, the results suggest that also suicides and suicide attempts in semi-public and public spaces could be significantly reduced through carefully thought-out environmental interventions. At the same time, there remains a need for further analysis of the events and places involved in suicides and their attempts, to fully understand who commit them in these settings and why.

  • Residential movements in connection to renovation of rented multi-residential housing: A pilot study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science. - : IOP Publishing. - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315. ; 297:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Residential movement and displacement as an effect of renovation has earned attention and also affected renovation practices in Sweden. While statistical studies have linked deep renovation to residential movement and displacement, there are no recent studies that investigate why people move or remain in housing areas that are renovated, and if and how the relocation is determined by the renovation. A pilot study was initiated as a means to develop a methodology to study residential movement in connection to renovation. In this paper, methodological considerations are discussed based on 31 interviews (face-to-face and telephone) with movers related to 34 municipally owned rented housing areas about to undergo renovation, as well results from a questionnaire sent to two finalised renovation projects (N=113). So far, the pilot study indicate that few relocations can be linked to the up-coming or finalised renovation in the studies cases. The questionnaire that was sent out to remaining tenants had a low response rate of 29%, and the efficiency of using questionnaires is discussed.
