  • Posthumanistiska nyckelstexter
  • 2012. - 1

  • Populism, Democracy, and the Humanities : Interdisciplinary Explorations and Critical Enquiries
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this volume, twelve Sweden-based researchers reflect on the phenomenon and concept of populism in relation to democracy and the humanities from the multiple vantage points of various disciplinary backgrounds: philosophy, history of ideas, media and communication, journalism, political science, gender studies, organization science, education theory, popular culture, and literary studies. While the study of populism has attracted a lot of attention in political science, this topic has been rarely explored by scholars in the humanities. Rather than contribute to the already established area of populism studies in social and political sciences, our authors take a more open and exploratory stance through which they attempt to open up new fields and directions for inquiry from an interdisciplinary humanistic perspective.

  • Undoing Colonial Temporalities - Presentism and the Future of the Post/Past
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Anglistica AION - An Interdisciplinary Journal. - 2035-8504. ; 23:2, s. 83-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to explore the notion of presentism as a way of looking at the fraught temporalities of the post-/de- ‘pre-fixing frontier’ in colonialism studies. Drawing on various interpretations of the concept, presentism can be said to manifest when societies become unable to imagine a future or a past, because of structured powers keen on preserving the status quo. Using a combination of data from media ethnography and literary criticism, we intend to assess the productivity of an updated notion of presentism for the ongoing debates on the coloniality of power. Instances of arrested and recursive temporalities exemplified in recent Anglophone African novels as well as in Swedish media discourses on migration will serve as case studies. Issues of memory and denial, as well as the ideological claim that enduring phenomena such as immigration should be considered symptoms of a contemporary migratory crisis, will be at the centre of our investigation.

  • Gender and status competition in pre-modern societies
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This innovative volume of cultural history offers a unique exploration of how gender and status competition have intersected across different periods and places. The contributions collected here focus on the role of women and the practice of masculinity in setting as varied as ancient Rome, China, Iran and Arabia, medieval and early modern England, and early modern Italy, France, and Scandinavia, as well as exploring issues that affected people of all social rank, from raillery and pranks to shaming, male boasting about sexual conquests, court rituals, violence, and the use and display of wealth. Particular attention is paid to the performance of such issues, with chapters examining status and gender through cultural practices, especielly specific (re)presentations of women. These include Roman priestesses, early Christian virgin martyrs, flirtation in seventh-century Arabia, and the attempt by an early modern French woman to take her place among the immortals. Together this wide-ranging and fascinating array of studies from renowned scholars offers new insights into how and why different cultures responded to the drive for status, and the complications of gender within that drive.

  • 'Lasciatemi morire' & 'Rochers vous etes sourds': interpreting Arianna's tears, sighs and pain by investigating Italian and French ornaments through vocal practice-based research

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT: In my PhD research I depart from a female singer’s perspective of interpreting 17th century opera laments , based on musicologist Mauro Calcagno’s statement signifying the voice of the female singer as a symbol of Nothing in association with the concept of aesthetics in the early 17th century opera genre . The female singer, he points out, justified the relevance of “pure voice” and “over-vocalization” referring to two recurring tropes, pronounced within a larger discourse among 17th century intellectuals in Italy and France, concerned with the concept of aesthetics: the concept of nothingness and the singing of the nightingale. In this presentation I show my perceptions of the voice of Arianna. My aim is to better understand the use of ornamentation in my performance of Italian and French 17th century vocal music. Knowledge of ornamentation can be obtained by investigating at depth the singer’s process from the first encounter with the text and musical score, to the actual performance of stage. There are two important aspects I take into consideration. First, the intellectual discourse, contemporary to the creations and performances of the two laments by Monteverdi and Lambert, carries a great deal of information significant to vocal interpretation. Second, the oriental ornamentation is reflected upon the arts and architecture in Venice during the 16th and 17th centuries, but has not yet been fully addressed in relation to vocal ornamentation in the 17th century opera repertory. I have been observing the life and career of Signora Anna Renzi Romana, one of the first opera prima donnas active in Venice during mid 17th century. Her interpretations of laments and mad scenes made a great impact on her audience as well and on the intellectual academies supporting the early operatic events in Venice. As the sounding voices of the Greek Sirens seducing Odysseus and his sailors , Anna Renzi and her female colleagues seduced their audiences in the Venetian opera theaters. Renzi’s performances are described in a volume published to her honor in 1644, “La Glorie della Signora Anna Renzi Romana”. In my research I explore and reflect upon the vocal sounds of ‘trillo’, ‘esclamazione’ and ‘coup de gosier’ by merging these vocal ornaments and my experience of PURE VOICE to theories of Nothingness, debated by Italian and French17th century intellectuals in Venice and Paris. I also combine their thoughts and theories to philosophical theories of Nothing referring to Jean-Paul Sartre and Marcia Ça Cavalcante Schuback . My personal experience of the lamenting sound is then analyzed along with the glorious description of Renzi’s performances of the laments. Finally in my search for sources of vocal ornaments, I listen to voices and vocal music from the ‘east’, following the 16th and 17th century Venetian trading routes. The Eastern throat–beating ornaments and vibratos appears similar to the ones described by 17th century composers and authors like Giulio Caccini and Benigne de Bacilly, and they inspire my research towards different possible ways of performing the sighs, tears and pains of Arianna. This research and presentation is part of my PhD research project“Passionate Women’s Voices on Stage and an Interpretation of the 17th Century Lamenti and Scene di Pazzie”. • Minuting. Rethinking the Ordinary Through the Ritual of Transversal Listening
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: VIS. - : Society for Artistic Research. - 2003-024X. ; :5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exploratory essay introduces selected sound recordings along with notes and observations from Minuting – a practice of sonic journaling I have performed daily since July 2010 in numerous locations and settings. I weave these observations together in a way that resonates closely with the idea of repetition, in multiple forms: protest, automation, cycle, and ritual, as well as the repetition inherent to my acts of recording. While introducing sounds from the archive of Minuting, I reflect on how this constrained and systematically enacted form of listening, recording, and re-listening leads to a transversal type of sonic reflexivity. It is a form of alertness to sound that stretches beyond the immediate resonance of the 'now' – towards spatially and temporarily distant, yet to some extent intertwined, objects, subjects, events, and environments. The text evolves across three interrelated layers: annotated recordings from the project's archive, a set of thoughts and associations triggered by re-listening to the material, and a discursive analysis that opens up the project to a dialogue with other thematically resonant debates and practices. Drawing on perspectives from media studies, the philosophy of technology, sound studies and durational art, I discuss Minuting as an art work, a creative constraint and a transversal listening practice. Lastly, I propose it as an existential media technique for composing critical and reflective positions towards one's surrounding space, experience of time, and use of sound technologies.
