  • …Säger du trottoar en gång till…” : Att se staden som relationer istället för ting
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Samhällsbyggandet som mysterium.. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789188661678
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Jane Jacobs blev känd över världen för sin bok The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

  • Free choice in residential care for older people– a philosophical reflection
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - : Elsevier. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 37:April, s. 59-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Free choice in elderly care services is a debated issue. Using the theoretical support of philosophers of free will, this paper explores free choice in relocation to residential care. The three dominant perspectives within this field of philosophy, libertarianism, determinism and compatibilism, are applied from the perspective of the older individual to the process of moving. Empirical data were collected through qualitative interviews with 13 older individuals who had recently moved into residential care. These individuals had made the choice to move following either a health emergency or incremental health problems. In a deterministic perspective they had no alternative to moving, which was the inevitable solution to their various personal problems. A network of people important to them assisted in the move, making the choice possible. However, post-move the interviewees’ perspective had changed to a libertarian or compatibilist interpretation, whereby although the circumstances had conferred little freedom regarding the move, the interviewees reported a high degree of self-determination in the process. It appeared that in order to restore self-respect and personal agency, the older individuals had transformed their restricted choice into a choice made of free will or freer will.

  • Translating spatial experiences to design recommendations : A mission impossible?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Caring architecture. - Cambridge : Cambridge Scholars Publishing. - 9781443898966 - 1443898961
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter relocates to the mid-1970s in Sweden, to a newly opened outpatient clinic for mental healthcare. The clinic, Saltsjöbaden Mental Health Centre (SMHC), was one clinic out of three created in the pilot scheme The Nacka Project 1974-1979, an influential ‘actor’ in the decentralisation and de-institutionalisation of Swedish mental healthcare. The spatial organisation and design of SMHC was encompassing the dual aims of preventing people from becoming long-term psychiatric patients and fostering a culture of co-operation among staff. However, experiences of the architecture differed; it was embraced by many for its innovative and supportive design, whereas the design was criticised by others. Some years later, when SMHC was used as a precedent in guidelines for “the new psychiatry” by The Swedish Health and Social Care Institute for Planning and Rationalisation (SPRI 1985), most of its place-specific aspects relating to care ideology, work organisation and staff experiences were not brought to the fore. Why was this so? Why, in many ways, did these newer recommendations propose quite a different mental health centre to that programmed by the management of SMHC and experienced by staff and patients?

  • IMPLICATIONS OF EU INSTRUMENTS ON COMPANY CAPABILITIES TO DESIGN MORE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS-PRODUCT ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT AND DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Design Society. - : Cambridges Institutes Press. ; 3, s. 2245-2254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the EU, initiatives with concrete instruments for measuring and storing sustainability-related product data are now introduced in legislation. Based on literature review and semi-structured interviews, this study investigates two EU instruments, the Product Environmental Footprint method and Digital Product Passports, and their potential implications for company capabilities to design and select more sustainable solutions in a strategic way. The results show that these instruments can lead to increased transparency and traceability in the design and comparison of solutions, allowing for more effective collaboration across the value chain. By applying a strategic sustainability perspective, it was found that these EU instruments have major limitations as they lack a systems perspective, do not include a full socio-ecological sustainability perspective, and do not support strategic decision-making. This results in risks for suboptimization and the design of solutions that turn out to be costly dead-ends on the way towards a sustainable society. Research is therefore recommended to investigate how these instruments can facilitate a strategic development of sustainable solutions. © The Author(s), 2023. Published by Cambridge University Press.

  • "Freedom for Just One Night" : The Promise and Threat of Information and Communication Technologies
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: WomenWriters.net. - : WomenWriters.net. ; Spring:Special Guest Issue
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ’Freedom for Just One Night’ The Promise and Threat of Information and Communication Technologies Not many novels have been written about technology from a female perspective, but Jeanette Winterson’s The PowerBook and Pat Cadigan’s children’s book Avatar are two examples where information and communication technologies (ICT) play a major role. That women often see the benefits of a less regulated space provided by the technology is explored in these two novels. In this essay I will study them through the lens of Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of smooth and striated space. The focus has been on three different issues: information and communication technology’s impact on identity; privacy and security on the Internet; and also – since both of the authors are women, who consider gender-related strategies – female views of ICT. The novels contradict the idea that there is a virtual reality entirely separated from the real world; both imply that although ICT creates a virtual environment, the meetings and communications that take place in it are real, especially from an emotional perspective. The novels suggest that the characters’ sense of identity and security often is tested when opposites – smooth/striated, online/offline, virtual/real, emotional/technical, private/public – collide, when this collision triggers an emotional response. In Avatar emotions are in fact a method to authenticate the validity of what happens in a virtual environment. Furthermore, the collision and its impact on the emotions create an indeterminacy, a smooth space, and seems to be a narrative strategy for both Winterson and Cadigan, which they both use to examine a number of issues, including patriarchy, which shows what these female authors think is possible to do with the help of ICT. Both texts study how the Internet – and the thoughts mediated through the Internet – influence individuals and societies. As a new medium, Internet can be considered new territory, a new frontier. Whose thoughts are going to be trendsetting on the Net? Who colonizes Cyberspace? Both authors point towards the benefits of a more balanced viewpoint, where more angles than one are taken into account, and what can happen when a hegemonic world-view has been shaken. These novels convincingly show that it is in the dynamic tension between smooth and striated that new viewpoints can be found.

  • Aesthetics of Noise in Digital Poetry
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Cybertext Yearbook. - : University of Jyväskylä. - 1457-6899.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay, I analyze the phenomenon of digital poems represen-tative of the use of a visually “busy” and typographically dense aesthetic.1 As my primary examples I investigate three poetic works: Spawn by Andy Campbell, Diagram Series 6 by Jim Rosenberg, and Leaved Life by Anne Frances Wysocki. I argue that a dominant aesthetic technique of these works, which I propose to call “visual noise,” is generated by a tactilely responsive surface in combination with visual excess which requires an embodied engagement from the reader/user in order for a reading to take place.2 I focus on visual noise, excluding for the moment the common and widespread practice of sonic noise. Analyses of sound and practices of sonic noise in literary practice are an important twin to the analyses I offer here.

  • Architecture as an agent of change : The case of school 53 in St Petersburg
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Contemporary design in the social sector.. - St Petersburg : Design Platform, TOK Curators. ; , s. 50-61
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Conducting a thorough organisational analysis is crucial for coming up with sustainable design interventions and architec- tural alteration. Architecture has the power to influence or constrain spatial practices. Therefore in order to be successful every proposal has to be based on knowledge about the organisation, their everyday activities and goals

  • Macklean som ekonom
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Svaneholms Årsbok. - Skurup : Svaneholm Andelsförening. ; , s. 37-48, s. 37-48
