  • Characters as fictional migrants : Atonement, adaptation and the screenplay process
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Screenwriting. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1759-7137 .- 1759-7145. ; 11:1, s. 81-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The migration metaphor has been widely used in connection with media adaptions, but the metaphor has remained an abstract figure of speech. Yet, to understand characters as migrants who go through journeys of acculturation when they are adapted for the screen may enhance understanding of both the characters' potential and problems that may arise during the development process. This article proposes that the development of characters and their processes - as fictional beings - can be understood through the use of models that describe real migrants' adaptation processes. Using Christopher Hampton's screenplay drafts for the film Atonement (2001), it outlines how such migratory journeys go hand in hand with screenwriters' problem-solving processes. The article thus develops the idea that migrating characters, in their capacity as fictional beings and the thematic issues that they represent, both adapt to and appropriate their new media environments; simultaneously, they are appropriated by new creative forces and by the conventions of those new media environments, who in turn must adapt to the characters in this process of bi-directional acculturation.

  • "En ny musikuppfostran" : reformpedagogiska anspråk i Siljanskolans bildningsinnehåll
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Educational History. - Umeå : Umeå University Library. - 2001-7766 .- 2001-9076. ; 3:1, s. 47-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "A new form of musical upbringing": Pretenses of reform pedagogy content in the Siljan schoolIn this article, I describe the Siljan school in Tällberg as a Swedish example of alternative pedagogy. The overall questions relate to the reform pedagogy content of the school and its ability to give Swedish music teaching a new form of musical upbringing. An important issue is how the Siljan school as a model for Swedish reform has been inspired by the reform pedagogy movements in USA and Germany. The analysis is thus based on the Alm couple’s ability to give the school an international character which shines light on Swedish reforms in the greater context of reform pedagogy. With its basis in discursive education of the 1930s, two main questions are discussed: what perspective on musical education can be identified in the personal development ethos of the Siljan school? How can the school’s relation to the reform pedagogy music movement during the start of the 1900s be understood? From a hermeneutic perspective, the article contributes by investigating how the Siljan school can have affected decisions in education politics, Swedish schooling, and Swedish musical life. In summary, the article contributes with new knowledge on a chapter in the history of Swedish music pedagogy.

  • My Name is Samoan
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Negotiating Modern Pacific Island Identities.
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • In the Samoan culture, chiefly titles are a form of oral history and cultural knowledge.  In this paper, I interpret the term Samoan to be a title that has its own oral history and cultural knowledge. Those who call themselves Samoan belong to this history. However, Samoan is a title which is contested and (re)defined by contemporary Samoan cultural practitioners in immigration destination countries such as New Zealand. Examples are Victor Roger’s play My Name is Gary Cooper, Oscar Kightley and Simon Small’s play Fresh Off the Boat, and Tusi Tamasese’s film The Orator (O Le Tulafale). These works subvert the Western gaze upon the Samoan as the exotic and present a cultural mirror to Samoans to reveal how they view themselves. They form a larger discussion on a transnational or meta-Samoan culture and identity that is inclusive and that reflects the urban and cosmopolitan realities of Samoans whether they are in Samoa or abroad as seen in web networks such as the “Coconet”.

  • An Aesthetic and Ethical Perspective on Art-Based Environmental Education and Sustainability from a Phenomenological Viewpoint
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ethical Literacies and Education for Sustainable Development Young People, Subjectivity and Democratic Participation. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319490106
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter I seek to understand the links between ethical and aesthetic teaching and learning tools in education concerning sustainability from a phenomenological perspective. Focusing on the phenomenological concepts Being-in-the-world, self-experience, horizon and object I discuss how to engage teachers and pupils in environmental issues from a holistic point of view. Aesthetic educational methods based on ethical aspects and environmental awareness may provide such holistic learning opportunity. Participation and involvement in such teaching and learning contexts might create a shift in perspective to bring plants to the forefront and thus challenge plant blindness.

  • Relational and Critical Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development. Belonging and Sensing in a Vanishing World
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume focuses on the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), education, to look at sustainability from various angles with the purpose of challenging preconceptions about what sustainable education might entail and how it should be conducted. To this end, the book assembles scholars from various research fields and disciplines, who are willing to be at the cutting edge regarding sustainability and education on all levels with students in the ages of 6-15. Through this approach, the text points towards a “wild pedagogy” in line with post-sustainable thinking. This involves agency and the role of nature itself as a co-educator, and promotes cultural changes, and explorative processes of finding “the wild” – the unknown, and complexity in nature – and thus of challenging the human need for control. This approach is also, in line with the 2030 Agenda, an attempt to move from advocating predetermined behavioural change to embracing a pluralistic perspective on sustainability, based on holistic views on education. Such views include curiosity, wonderment, compassion and agency as guiding lights. The book is structured into three sections, based on three interrelated strands. These strands are, in various ways, dependent on one another and further engaged with bringing education theory and practice together. These strands are 1) Belonging and sensing, 2) Critical thinking, social justice and action competence, and 3) Creating hope in a vanishing world. These strands aim to increase our access to and understanding of the ways in which sustainability can be integrated into education and why. The purpose of the text is to encourage educators of all kinds and levels, as well as scholars in different fields, to explore new perspectives on education for sustainable development. The book examines probes in diverse academic fields and focuses on how to combine different approaches and content, and therefore everyone interested in interdisciplinary and cross-curricular teaching and learning should find this work enlightening.

  • Editorial intentions and viewer perceptions : An audiovisual methodology for studying film editing and eye movements
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Visual Methodologies. - Neuchâtel. - 2040-5456. ; 4:2, s. 13-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents an audio-visual methodology, VOSMET, designed to address activities of the craft of film editing, with a focus on the use of perception, and its implications. The methodology employs 13 different visual aspects and five different audio aspects, starting with video-recording observations of an editor, and ending with the analysis of eye-tracking data from film viewers. Craft research needs methodologies that address craft activities and cognitive approaches. Design practices share a similar need for reaching deeper understanding. It is neither established how film editors achieve perceptual precision in continuity editing in practice. The VOSMET methodology simultaneously captures bodily actions, utterances, software events, and keystrokes, along with the audiovisual material under processing, and uses graphics to distinguish between what takes place. The methodology also contributes by grasping what a film editor attends to, how this attention functions, as well as how perceptual factors are handled by the film editor. Finally, the methodology can evaluate editorial intentions against film viewer perceptions.

  • Strange Masks of Truths and Identities
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The connection between novel-to-film studies and identity politics has been addressed since at least 1915, Kamilla Elliot observes, and Laurence Raw has recently drawn relevant attention to the analogy between Jerome Bruner’s theories about identity formation and personal adaptation through reorienting narration and media adaptations. Inspired by Raw, in this paper, I discuss the perils, truths, and morals of adaptation that the characters in Patrick McCabe’s novels lay bare.McCabe, mostly known for “Butcher Boy” (adapted for the screen by Neil Jordan), consistently dramatizes how people try, and often fail, to adapt to new social conventions and realities with the guidance of cultural archetypes and ideal fictional characters. In Winterwood (2006) and The Holy City (2009) the protagonists, and the novels, conjure adaptions and appropriations of James Bond, mediations of the Irish Paddy, the New Man, Stephen Dedalus and others, in their attempts to mould out new identities in a world of flux. They do so mostly through narrative reconstruction of the truth about themselves, their environment, and of the fictional references they make use of. As McCabe’s protagonists navigate through the mazes of truth and identity, they demonstrate that, as long as fluctuations of ontologies keep epistemological issues at ransom, identities of characters and stories demand re-imaginations at risk of absolute loss of identity, for the sake of adaptation, and vice versa. For characters and stories, it is a matter of life and death both way around. Like Derrida’s postulation “il n'y a pas de hors-text”, McCabe’s narratives ask the field of adaptation studies and creative teams of adaptations the simple questions: What is the true text and what is a true identity within that frame? What strategies should be employed to ascertain a valid truth of the text and valid true identities, in that context? The answer given is that any adaptation entails the human conflict between the yearning for truth and identity, and the fear of loss of the same. Adaptations, McCabe teaches us, is a perilous game of strange masks of identities, regardless of whether media, political, or social adaptations are considered.
