  • Anatomy of a 21st-century sustainability project: The untold stories
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What does a sustainability project look like in the 21st century? Not the glossy version, but the naked truth? Tired of manicured, over-theorised accounts of the ‘musts’ and ‘shoulds’ of sustainability transitions, we got to the bottom of things; actually, to the very bottom of the project hierarchy: the individual. Our point of departure is that projects are nothing but temporarily interconnected people. This means that if we don’t know what people do and what they think about their work, we will never be able to create a deeper understanding of the project, its rationale and future impact. Making use of the autoethnographic method, this book provides critical insights into what it’s like being part of a 21st-century project. Building on unfiltered first-hand contributions from 73 authors representing the five organs of a project’s anatomy – the brain (theoreticians), the skeleton (leaders), the limbs (strategists), the heart (local stakeholders) and the lungs (researchers) – the book covers all the important aspects of contemporary project-making: (1) projectification as a societal phenomenon; (2) sustainability as the main project buzzword; (3) transdisciplinarity as a hot working method; (4) economy as the invisible project propeller; (5) space as the contextual project qualifier; (6) gender and integration as the obstinate orphans of project-making; (7) trends as the villains of thoughtless project mimicry; (8) politics as the “necessary evil” of projects; and (9) knowledge production as the cornerstone of all project work. The book ends with an extensive critical analysis of what makes a project tick and how to avoid project failure. We infer that talking about project outcomes and impacts is just that… talking. What makes a difference is what can be done to the project in itself. Three important virtues – the ABC of project-making – emanate from this book’s 40 chapters: building good relationships (Affinity), having the guts to make a change (Bravery), and showing willingness to learn (Curiosity). These are the basis for the successful execution of future sustainability projects, where complexity, unpredictability and desperation will become a staple force to recon with. The original contribution of this book is to shed light on the silent triumphs and hidden pathologies of everyday project-making in an effort to elevate individual knowledge to a level of authority for solving the wicked – yet project-infused – problems of our time.

  • Adapting the queer language of Anne Lister’s diaries
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lesbian Studies. - Philadelphia : Routledge. - 1089-4160 .- 1540-3548. ; 26:4, s. 382-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and Gentleman Jack (2019–2022) are both television dramas based on the private journals of Anne Lister (1791–1840). The diaries were not only partly written in code but make use of idiosyncratic terms, and  the two adaptations deal in different ways with the language used in the diaries. This essay examines the language of Anne Lister’s diaries and compares their two adaptations, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, with a particular focus on the use of queer vocabulary. © 2022 The Author(s). • Phonetic Characteristics of Domestic Cat Vocalisations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International Workshop on Vocal Interactivity in-and-between Humans, Animals and Robots, VIHAR 2017. - 9782956202905 ; , s. 5-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cat (Felis catus, Linneaus 1758) has lived around or with humans for at least 10,000 years, and is now one of the most popular pets of the world with more than 600 millionindividuals. Domestic cats have developed a more extensive, variable and complex vocal repertoire than most other members of the Carnivora, which may be explained by their social organisation, their nocturnal activity and the long period of association between mother and young. Still, we know surprisingly little about the phonetic characteristics of these sounds, and about the interaction between cats and humans.Members of the research project Melody in human–cat communication (Meowsic) investigate the prosodic characteristics of cat vocalisations as well as the communication between human and cat. The first step includes a categorisation of cat vocalisations. In the next step it will be investigated how humans perceive the vocal signals of domestic cats. This paper presents an outline of the project which has only recently started.

  • Bildningsboxen
  • 2022

  • The Street of Associations : Migration and Infrastructural (Re)Production of Norra Grängesbergsgatan, Malmö
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As global migration alters the demography of Swedish cities in the postwelfare era, socio-spatial polarisation and discrimination present acute challenges. In recent decades, Malmö has transformed from an industrial into a postindustrial, service economy-oriented city. The neoliberal urban planning and regeneration policies guiding such processes carry detrimental social and economic effects for unprivileged groups with limited opportunities and access to recourses, such as migrants. The focus of this study is the post-industrial street of Norra Grängesbergsgatan (NGBG) in the southeast part of Malmö. Geographically central, yet peripheral and long associated with crime, surveillance, and ‘informal’ economy, it has transformed into a hub for migrant breadwinners and entrepreneurs, as well as artistic and activist groups. NGBG provides a complex case of how migration and urban marginalisation intersect with neoliberal policies, and how migrants have responded creatively to such processes through spatial and material interventions. By weaving together the stories of and from the street, the thesis unfolds the translocal associations created in this nexus. Based on a combination of ethnographic and architectural methods, mapping the in situ post-industrial conditions of NGBG, the thesis explores how migrants have (re)produced infrastructures in support of their aspirations to remain in the street in face of the risk of banishment. The spatial, socio-economic, and temporal infrastructures in focus of this study reveal how migrants negotiate their right to difference and their right to the city. In the face of obstacles and limitations, spatial as well as temporal, places of belonging, care, and survival emerge otherwise. Paradoxically, however, these transformations from below have placed NGBG in the limelight of commercial development interests, intent on ‘revitalising’ the street into a hub for leisure and entertainment. Hence, migrant practices remain ‘off the map’, discursively and materially invisible in planning and design policies and practices. This thesis argues that other ways of city-making require a revision of the value systems guiding planning institutions, which engage with multiple voices and subjectivities in the pursuit of co-production and co-habitation. It suggests an architecture of associations as an epistemological and empirical project, as well as an imperative for urban design practice.

  • The Street Art World
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, street art has become embedded in popular culture and received growing attention from the art market and art institutions. Work by street artists has entered galleries, auction houses and museums, and some artists have been given the opportunity to create large-scale sanctioned public art projects. Simultaneously, widespread photographic documentation of street artworks and the circulation of images online have provided artists with a potentially global audience. The Street Art World investigates street art as a relatively newly established field within contemporary art. With the American sociologist Howard S. Becker’s notion of “art worlds” as a central point of departure, the book seeks to characterise street art by studying and participating in the everyday interaction among the artists, gallerists, collectors, critics, curators, bloggers and street art enthusiasts that make up the social environment (the street art world) in which the term street art is continuously given its meaning. Major themes addressed in the book include: (1) The social construction of the meaning of the term street art and the resulting difficulties in formally defining what street art is. (2) The often contradictory attitudes within the street art world towards art history and the institutions of art. (3) The relationship between street art, the art market and the institutional art world. (4) The relationship between street art and public art. (5) Street art’s potential to affect the viewer’s perception of public space, and the possible challenges the increasing digital mediation of street art may pose to bringing this potential to fruition. While the book presents central characteristics of the street art movement, it also acknowledges that it is not feasible to pin down the nature of street art once and for all, since street art is a product of complex social processes.
