  • Older people in persistent pain : nursing and paramedical staff perceptions and pain management
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Blackwell. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 41:6, s. 575-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Persistent pain is a common problem for older people. Knowledge about how nursing and paramedical staff perceive these people and what they do to relieve the pain seems scarce. AIM: To explore nursing and paramedical staff perceptions of older people in persistent pain and their day-to-day management of pain. METHODS: Interviews in Swedish with 52 nursing auxiliaries, Registered Nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists were collected from February to May 2000. The analysis was based on their stories (n = 150) about older people in persistent pain who received help in their own homes or in special accommodation. A typology of staff perceptions of pain in older people was developed. Activities to manage pain were examined using content analysis. RESULTS: Respondents perceived the pain as real, exaggerated, trivial, care-related, endured, concealed, self-caused or inarticulate. Older people perceived as exaggerating the pain, those with care-related and self-caused pain evoked frustration in the staff, while those perceived as enduring their pain evoked satisfaction. Various strategies to manage pain were used: no activity, medication, mediating contacts, distracting activities, physical therapies, mobility, work in a gentle way, rest or relieving pressure on body part, and communication concerning pain. The activities differed between the types, as well as between staff with different professional backgrounds. CONCLUSION: Care and treatment provided by staff should be based on older people's needs rather than on staff attitudes and preferences. The typology revealed that staff perceived older people in pain as a heterogeneous group and that their perceptions affected the pain-relieving activities that were offered. It seems urgent to address how to handle pain in older people who never complain and those who complain a great deal, as well as how to handle pain in people with impaired communicative ability. Reflective discussions on feelings related to different individuals are needed.

  • Life satisfaction among older people (65+) with reduced self-care capacity : the relationship to social, health and financial aspects.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 15:5, s. 607-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at investigating life satisfaction and its relation to living conditions, overall health, self-care capacity, feeling lonely, physical activities and financial resources among people (65+) with reduced self-care capacity. BACKGROUND: Knowledge about factors related to low life satisfaction among older people with reduced self-care capacity is sparse, although this is important in health care and nursing so that the care is adapted to their needs and perspective. Previous research has mainly focused on isolated aspects such as pain in relation to life satisfaction among older people in general and less among so those with reduced self-care capacity in general. DESIGN AND METHOD: A subsample of 522 persons was selected from a randomly selected cross-sectional survey using a modified form of the Older Americans' Resources Schedule and Life Satisfaction Index Z. RESULTS: The mean age in the total sample was 77.9; women (79.5) were significantly older than men (77.0). Low life satisfaction was found among women, as well as those living in special accommodations. Life Satisfaction Index Z was 15.3 (SD 5.6) in the total sample. Gender and living conditions did not explain life satisfaction whilst poor overall self-reported health and poor financial resources in relation to needs had the strongest explanatory value. Also of significant importance were loneliness, the degree of reduced self-care capacity and feeling worried. CONCLUSION: Life satisfaction in older people with reduced self-care capacity is determined by several factors, with social, physical, mental and financial aspects probably interacting with each other; especially feeling lonely, degree of self-care capacity, poor overall health, feeling worried and poor financial resources in relation to needs. These factors need to be considered in the care of these people to preserve or improve their life satisfaction. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Nursing interventions in terms of preventive home visits, rehabilitation, health education directed towards physical, psychological, social and economic aspects of importance may help to preserve or improve life satisfaction for those with reduced self-care capacity.

  • Entrepreneurial ecosystems : towards a systemic approach to entrepreneurship?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Geografisk tidsskrift. - : Routledge. - 0016-7223 .- 1903-2471. ; 120:2, s. 87-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite its relative newness, entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) have attracted much attention from research and policy but they are recognized to be largely untheorized. It is claimed that one aspect which distinguishes the EE perspective from other perspectives related to business environments is its systemic approach; however, much of the systemic approach still needs to be investigated. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate how the systemic and complex approach of EEs can be theoretically strengthened. We do this by investigating what values complex adaptive system theory holds for advancing the EE perspective. We highlight four propositions which are of particular importance for strengthening the systemic approach of EE: spatial and component boundaries of the system; self-governance; the relational dimension between system components and the system; and the evolution of the system. We propose that boundaries should be seen as a natural part of the system, that a complex system is too complex to capture all components and all interactions, and that studying only individual activities will not enable us to fully understand the system's behaviour.

  • Local culture as a context for entrepreneurial activities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Routledge. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 25:9, s. 1556-1574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how an industrial legacy leads to the formation of a distinct local culture and how the culture's survival provides a context for the subsequent entrepreneurial activities in new local industries. The discussion about culture as a key driver of entrepreneurship and economic growth is well established in the academic debate. However, we know little about how culture is formed. Through a qualitative case study of two polar Swedish cities, the study highlights four key factors which are instrumental in the formation of local culture: initial conditions, characteristics of key players, network activities and composition of newcomers. We show how the local entrepreneurs responded to the underlying assumptions of the two different cultures.

  • Toward outcome-based approaches in higher education in two nordic countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Public sector reform and performance management in developed economies. - Kristianstad : Routledge. ; :23, s. 248-270, s. 248-270
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent decades, modernization efforts by public sector organizations have been driven by neoliberalism principles, while simultaneously focusing on performance measurement and management systems (PMMS). These systems are expected to promote a stronger emphasis on effectiveness, quality, and outcomes. Based on a documentary analysis, this chapter investigates how PMMS within higher education in Finland and Sweden have defined, measured, and managed outcomes and effectiveness. The findings shed light on converging and diverging trends and the potentialities and challenges of outcome-based approaches and provide scholars and practitioners with insights into the current development and key features of such systems.

  • Activity and Artifact : The symbiosis of truck drivers' work
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: This paper outlines design ideas from a project dealing with different interaction concepts for the design of a computer based navigation system for truck drivers. The incentive for thinking about interaction concepts is that programming of navigation systems often occurs while driving, since that is when the support is needed. We have been working with ethnographical studies of truck drivers driving both over short and long distances. There has been quite a lot of work done in the field of cars and navigation, in this paper however the main theme is not navigation in cars as such, but the truck environment as an example of a high-demanding room for work activities. This lead to a design situation where the artifact and the activity has to go together, the artifact has to ?melt-in? to the work practice. We discuss how the design of computational power can melt-in to the work-practice without demanding too much of the attention needed for driving the truck safely.

  • Lärarlärdom Högskolepedagogisk konferens 2012
  • 2013

  • Backer behaviors – changing investment dynamics in equity crowdfunding markets
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Baltic Journal of Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1746-5265 .- 1746-5273. ; 18:6, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to establish the shape of investment dynamics in equity crowdfunding to better understand backer behavior. Design/methodology/approach: This study provides insights into when backers invest in successful funding campaigns. It uses t-tests to compare differences in means between observation windows during successful funding campaigns. It is based on 4,938 transactions from 61 campaigns, focusing on the first and last tail ends. Findings: In contrast to previous findings, the current investment dynamics seem more U-shaped than L-shaped. This supports previous findings about a strong start but also suggests a late collective attention effect. The strength is higher at the first tail end. However, differences in the later tail ends are statistically significant and emphasize the presence of late investment activities, especially in crowded or less complex campaigns. Practical implications: These findings emphasize the importance of signaling during the entire funding window. This encourages platforms to invest in user-friendly functionalities that guide entrepreneurs and help backers when investing in successful campaigns. Originality/value: This study improves the understanding of backer behavior and suggests changing investment dynamics in equity crowdfunding. In addition, this pattern contrasts with previous findings on dynamic collective attention effects in rich digitally informative markets, implying two attention effects when uncertainty is high. © 2023, Ola Olsson.

  • Backer behaviours : An explorative study of investor types in equity crowdfunding
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 42:1-2, s. 156-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Equity crowdfunding (ECF) is a new source of early-stage finance where ordinary people are the investors. In this context, investors are called backers, and their behaviours are less well understood. The contribution of this paper is to explore differences between backer investment behaviours. This is important, as it further positions backers when it comes to behaviour of different investor types, but also enables a discussion of attitudes and management of uncertainty from a portfolio theory perspective. The data include 4, 938 backer transactions collected from FundedByMe.com during 2012-2016. Most backers invest in single campaign portfolios (single-portfolio backers) and seem less attracted to uncertainty. However, 16% of the crowd invest in multiple campaign portfolios (multi-portfolio backers). They seem more attracted to uncertainty and most of them diversify to manage the portfolio uncertainty. Hence, a minority of the crowd seem to care about uncertainty and manage it in a professional manner. Copyright © 2021 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Top managers’ formal and informal control practices in product innovation processes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management/Emerald. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 1176-6093 .- 1758-7654. ; 17:4, s. 497-524
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to understand the formal and informal practices of top managers as they seek to control product innovation processes and how the style of control used differs during development stages and gates. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative in-depth case study was conducted at a multinational corporation (pseudonym: MEC). The authors examined 12 product innovation projects and carried out semi-structured interviews to understand the experiences, perceptions and challenges of the people involved in product development projects with a focus on the interactions between top managers and the project teams. Findings: The authors found that MEC uses formal control mechanisms such as a stage-gate model and a project management and reporting system to keep track of the progress of innovation projects. In addition, top managers use informal controls through involvement in innovation activities and interaction with the team members during the stages and gates of the development process. To carry out their control practices top managers use four distinct styles of control as follows: participative, facilitative, empowering and authoritative. Practical implications: Suggestions are provided for managers on how formal and informal management control tools can be used in innovation processes. The authors show how top managers can broaden their range of interventions by involving themselves in product innovation projects in different ways. Originality/value: This paper shows how the combination of formal and informal controls can generate a more holistic view of management control in innovation. It also adds to previous conceptualizations of control use by suggesting four distinct styles, which top managers can use to involve themselves in product innovation processes. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.
