  • Ecology and sociotechnical systems research – motivations for theoretical and methodological integration across fields
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Sustainability Transitions conference 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Currently, we are witnessing a number of global trends that do not promise well for the future. Accelerating climate change, loss of biodiversity, chemical pollution, disappearance of natural forest and degradation of fishing grounds and agricultural lands are just a few of the serious environmental problems that threaten the functional and structural integrity of ecosystems, to an extent that also human societies risk collapse. The scale of human impact is now such that scholars suggest that we live in the Anthropocene. The trends are driven by several linked factors, which are not easily disentangled into manageable specific problems to be solved by specific policies. More than ever, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations are needed in order to address these urgent challenges. The objective of this paper is to argue for the importance of research on socio-technical-ecological systems (STES) rather than social-ecological (SES) and sociotechnical systems (STS) separately. Hence, we address researchers in both the social-ecological and sociotechnical fields. We organize the argument around six reasons why “technology” should be integrated into SES studies. We call these reasons: (1) the interface and mediation aspect, (2) ambivalence, (3) the agency aspect, (4) the question of scale, (5) the question of governance and politics, and (6) the question of epistemology and framing. We also highlight potential conceptual conflicts and mistranslations. Our discussion is primarily a theoretical argument, exemplified with empirical examples.Among the conceptual challenges, we note that SES scholars, if they consider technology in their analyses, generally treat it as an exogenous factor or as a passive background element. Similarly, STS scholars tend to neglect ecological dynamics and refer to the ecological domain mainly in terms of inputs and outputs, e.g. natural resources, environmental and health problems caused by human activities. In light of the discussion, we conclude that the importance of collaborating across the two fields goes beyond each field adding pieces together. We argue that integration and translation across these domains will lead to qualitative change in the theoretical and methodological approaches of both fields; and that technology, society and ecology should be given symmetric analytical attention.

  • Change Agent Infrastructure (CHAI) – a Stakeholder Analysis Tool for Ergonomics- and Work Environment- Related Change Projects
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This paper is a short communication introducing a novel method forstakeholder analysis, Change Agent Infrastructure (CHAI). The method isspecifically developed in the context of ergonomics/work environment-relatedchange projects and is meant for early stages of change projects. It mapspotential stakeholders against eight distinct “roles” that have been found inprevious research to facilitate or hinder workplace change. Mapping the“decision dilemmas” that stakeholders may face, as well as identifying over- orunderrepresented roles, may benefit the change project in terms of determininginformation needs and how the project team should be staffed. The method hasbeen iteratively developed and tested in educational and research projects. Themethod is visual, participative and helps to clarify the various participants’understanding of the change at hand and what it means for them – thiscontributes positively to information strategies and decisions that facilitates theplanning and execution of a sustainable change.

  • Tapping into western technologies by Chinese multinationals: Geely's purchase of Volvo Cars and Huawei hiring of Ericsson employees in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Innovation spaces in Asia entrepreneurs, multinational enterprises and policy edited by Maureen McKelvey, Sharmistha Bagchi-Sen. ; s. 231-255
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on how firms from emerging markets can access, and tap into, relevant external knowledge for innovation in Western countries, and thereby stimulate flows within new innovation spaces across countries.. This chapter focuses on China and Sweden, and more specifically on companies in the automobile and telecommunication industries. Chinese companies are increasingly moving abroad to access both advanced technologies and new markets. The chapter presents two case studies of Chinese firms moving into Sweden, including Geely’s purchase of Volvo Car Corporation in the automotive industry and Huawei’s hiring of Ericsson’s previous employees in the telecommunication industry. The cases represent two mechanisms for accessing scientific and technological resource, namely foreign acquisition and employment of key individuals from competitors through the establishment of R&D labs.

  • The organizational nexus of changing management practices for sustainable renovation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Annual ARCOM Conference, 5-7 September 2016, Manchester, UK.. ; 2, s. 1141-1150
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambitiously set governmental sustainability targets together with a run-down building stock in need of renovation force public construction client organisations to find sustainable and new ways to renovate. Besides technology development, these challenges require that sustainability targets are embedded in decision making practices. Focusing on organising processes and management practices related to sustainable renovation of public buildings in Sweden this paper outlines a future research proposal that acknowledges the intertwined relationship between multi-levelled processes in sustainable renovation, i.e. unveiling the organisational nexus of renovation management practice. Findings from an ongoing case study were analysed by applying an analytical lens inspired by the theoretical framework of institutional work. Focusing on organization processes and management practices the case concerns a ‘strategy development process’ for renovation of public pre-schools in Gothenburg, Sweden. In total six meeting observations and eleven interviews were conducted. A conceptual model describing the organizational nexus of changing management practice for sustainable renovation is presented, from which a set of critical research questions for further investigation is derived.

  • Fostering the Development of Emerging Knowledge Intensive Industry in China: The role of local governmnet
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Globelics conference 2015. ; 2015:404, s. 1-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does the local government stimulate knowledge intensive industry, within a regional innovation system? That is the research question for this paper. We analyze the development of the nanotechnology industry in Suzhou and the electrical vehicle industry in Hangzhou. They are used as cases to analyze the role of local government, and we do so from four aspects, namely technology, human capital, market and finance. In these cases, the local government helped the emerging industry not only in stimulating technological collaboration but also in creating market demand. While the local governments stimulated all four aspects listed above, the incentive to create demand has been particularly crucial.

  • How Networks and Sectoral Conditions Affect Commercialization in a Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurial Venture in the Medical Technology Industry: A case study of Aerocrine
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Dynamics of Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship : Business Strategy and Public Policy/Edited by Franco Malerba, Yannis Caloghirou, Maureen McKelvey, Slavo Radoševic. - 978-1-13-802528-8 ; s. 265-288
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses upon the development of a KIE venture in the medical technology sector in Sweden. The case study described and analyzed in this chapter is very specific, but it also provides insights into the more general processes about developing and managing a KIE venture. So although the KIE venture is located in Sweden, the dimensions related to market, and indeed increasingly those related to finance and production, are global. In the context of this book, this chapters show how networks and specific conditions in the sectoral systems of innovation influence the development and performance of a knowledge intensive entrepreneurial (KIE) venture.

  • Energy efficient transition in Sweden: triggers and barriers for retrofitting processes in municipality owned housing companies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ENHR Edinburgh July 1-4, 2014. Book of abstracts.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Globally and in Europe, the housing sector is responsible for a large share of the energy use, and large efforts have therefore been directed towards reduced energy use in the housing sector. In Sweden 39 percent of the energy use relate to “housing and business locations”, there is an ambition to reduce the energy use with 20 percent until year 2020, following the EU directive of energy efficiency. However, the national government has up to present responded quite hesitantly to the energy efficiency debate, possibly as the National Institute of Economic Research (NIER) claims that relevant transition measures will be met regardless of any specific measures directed to the sector of housing. Yet, the project group Collaborative learning for urban energy efficiency (the ClueE-project) has studied a number of examples where energy efficient retrofitting takes place in sub-urban areas. A central question for the overall project was: What are the major triggers and barriers in retrofitting processes, with special regards to the social sciences? From a financial point of view, the costs of energy efficient retrofitting are demanding, as most of the heating in these areas to 90 percent are sustainable district-heating. But seen from the perspective of the ‘third generation of energy policies’, there is an increasing potential today for local energy production solutions, zero-houses, or even houses that generates a surplus of energy, energy-plus-houses. The judicial tools used in these processes does not relate to minimum quality levels, rather, a more conscious use of the public procurement act is activated, as wise use of partnering contracting. The ClueE study also found that it is not specifically environmentally interested tenants that have been attracted by the energy efficient apartments, rather that has been the opportunity at hand. The lower ecological footprints of these tenants are supported as these groups are among the poorest segments of the population. To conclude, the core triggers found were: the necessity of broad political anchoring across majority and opposition, inclusive and transparent tenant-dialogues, comparable indicators in relation to evaluations and benchmarking. A more general conclusion is that more attention needs to be directed towards business locations, as the private homes’ market.

  • Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship: A new research agenda?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Book of abstracts of the 6th CIM Community Workshop.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Cultural and creative entrepreneurship are topics which during the past decade has increased significantly in relevance. This can be detected in numerous ways; e.g. increasing research attention, increasing publication outlets, increasing number of academic programs offering education tailored specifically to this context. One reason why cultural activities and creative industries have come into focus is the recognition that value realization takes place in different manners in and across different spheres. Where economists tend to focus on the spheres of the private company – implying that market and government are the central mechanisms for value realization – activities in the cultural and creative spheres have also proven to be important domains of significant value realization. For example, DiMaggio in his seminal 1982 paper demonstrated that founders of institutions for high culture would combine their interest in the arts with a willingness to assume responsibility, and thereby converting cultural institutions into significant business opportunities. Such insights clearly parallel what we find in, for example, Schumpeter’s definition of the entrepreneur, characterized as a risk- taker who stimulates change and captures business opportunities. Focus on entrepreneurship in these contexts, may in fact involve entirely new types of expression of value creation. For example, consider the British street artist Banksy, who in spite of (or maybe even due to) his controversial political messages and explicit rejection of normal market mechanisms (supplier-customer relations) has become a highly esteemed (and highly priced) artist and entrepreneur.Entrepreneurship and value creation in these spheres is argued to be activated through different mechanisms than purely financial market mechanisms. Often times we see aspect of social values being at the center of the value realization; like community, a sense of identity, solidarity, neighborhood, security, conviviality, friendship, and so on. It is this informal sphere, more generally denoted as civil society, that is critical for the realization of the cultural values (see e.g. Bendixen, 2000; Jeffcut and Pratt, 2002; Konrad, 2013).
