  • Automation and the imbrication of human and material agency : A sociomaterial perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International journal of human-computer studies. - London : Elsevier. - 1071-5819 .- 1095-9300. ; 145, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automation is projected to transform many industries and work domains and enable both increased levels of safety and efficiency by reallocating many of the functions traditionally performed by operators. However, research on the relation between automation and work practice is lagging and needs to be further explored in order to ground the debate and design of automated work on a sound empirical basis reflecting work in actual organizational settings. In particular, research is needed that offers rich naturalistic representations of human automation interaction that accounts for the mutual shaping of human and material agency over time. The ethnographic workplace study reported in this paper draws on the sociomaterial practice perspective and on the theory of imbrication to analyze a case in which an automatic speed regulation system was installed onboard five large passenger ferries in order to improve the energy efficiency of the execution of voyages. The results show how the adoption, appropriation and use of automated technologies is inextricable from the local patterns of social interaction and collaboration. The study contributes with a deeper understanding of the relation and entanglement of the social and technological elements in human automation interaction.

  • Co-generation of biofuels for transportation and heat for district heating systems – an assessment of the national possibilities in the EU
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 0301-4215 .- 1873-6777. ; 37:12, s. 5260-5272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomass gasification with subsequent synthesis to liquid or gaseous biofuels generates heat possible to use in district heating (DH) systems. The purpose here is to estimate the heat sink capacity of DH systems in the individual EU nations and assess the possibilities for biomass-gasification-based co-generation of synthetic biofuels for transportation and heat (CBH) for DH systems in the EU countries. The possibilities are assessed (i) assuming different levels of competiveness relative to other heat supply options of CBH corresponding to the EU target for renewable energy for transportation for 2020 and (ii) assuming that the potential expansion of the DH systems by 2020 is met with CBH. In general, the size of the DH heat sinks represented by the existing national aggregated DH systems can accommodate CBH at a scale that is significant compared to the 2020 renewable transportation target. The possibilities for CBH also depend on its cost-competitiveness compared to, e.g., fossil-fuel-based CHP. The possible expansion of the DH systems by 2020 represents an important opportunity for CBH and is also influenced by the potential increase in the use of other heat supply options, such as, industrial waste heat, waste incineration, and CHP.

  • On the possibility for cogeneration of biofuels for transport and heat for district heating systems in EU25
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: World Bioenergy 2008 Conference & Exhibition on Biomass for Energy.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gasification of biomass with subsequent conversion to liquid biofuels (BtL) results in considerable amounts of surplus heat. Some of this heat could be used in district heating (DH) systems. The aim of this study is to assess the potential for integration of BtL plants with the EU’s DH systems. The major parts of the DH systems are presently based on the use of fossil fuels. The fossil fuels are also dominating the EU transport sector. Thus, integration of BtL plants with the EU’s DH systems could contribute to EU goals of increasing the use of biomass for both heat and transport. The heat sink represented by the aggregated national DH systems is large enough to produce substantial amounts of biofuels for transport by co-generation. However, the potential contribution of the assessed option for meeting the EU target for biofuels for transport for 2020 is highly dependent on BtL plant configuration and competitiveness vs. other heat sources in the DH systems, e.g., CHP. It is found that integration of BtL with DH offers a substantial opportunity, but the attractiveness and possible impacts of expanding such systems need to be further analyzed.

  • Cogeneration of biofuels and heat in the European district heating systems
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th EU BC&E.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Union (EU) aims at an increased use of bioenergy in all sectors as well as an increased energy efficiency. The gasification of biomass with subsequent conversion to gaseous and liquid biofuels generates considerable amounts of surplus heat. Given that some of this heat is made useful in district heating systems, the energy efficiency of such biofuel options would increase. Since the district heating systems in the EU to a large extent is based on fossil fuels, CO2 emissions reduction from the district heating systems could be an additional benefit. The aim of this study is to assess the potential for integrating biofuel plants generating surplus heat with the district heating systems in the member states of the EU. On a national level, the heat sink represented by the district heating systems is large enough to accommodate a substantial biofuel production. However, the realization of this potential is highly dependent on national conditions and its competitiveness against other heat sources in the district heating systems. The attractiveness and possible impacts need to be further analyzed.

  • Realise the Potential! : Cost Effective and Energy Efficient District Heating in European Urban Areas
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Member States of EU27 need to accelerate the integration of energy efficient technology solutions to reach the 20% energy efficiency target set for 2020. At current pace, projections indicate that only half of expected primary energy reductions will be reached. To meet the energy demands of growing populations and a vibrant economy, while simultaneously reducing primary energy supplies, the European continent faces a new kind of challenge never previously encountered. The identification and application of feasible, competitive, and comprehensive solutions to this problem are of highest priority if the remaining gap is to be closed in time. How is this multi-dimensional and complex dilemma to be dissolved? In this work, expanded use of district heating technology is conceived as a possible solution to substantially reduce future primary energy demands in Europe. By extended recovery and utilisation of vast volumes of currently disregarded excess heat from energy and industry sector fuel transformation processes, district heating systems and combined generation of heat and power can improve the general efficiency of the European energy balance. To investigate the possible range of this solution, this thesis introduces a set of methodologies, theoretical concepts, and model tools, by which a plausible future excess heat utilisation potential, by means of district heat deliveries to residential and service sectors, is estimated. At current conditions and compared to current levels, this potential correspond to a threefold expansion possibility for directly feasible district heating systems in European urban areas and a fourfold increase of European excess heat utilisation.

  • The critical role of informed political direction for advancing technology : The case of Swedish marine energy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. - London : Elsevier. - 0301-4215 .- 1873-6777. ; 101, s. 52-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marine energy technologies can contribute to meeting sustainability challenges, but they are still immature and dependent on public support. This paper employs the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to analyze the development and diffusion of Swedish marine energy up until 2014. While there were promising device developers, relevant industrial capabilities, and world-class research, the system suffered from weaknesses in several important innovation processes. Finally, the analysis identifies the lack of informed political direction as a critical blocking factor and highlights its connection to domestic market potential. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

  • Incumbents’ responses to disruptive business model innovation: the moderating role of technology vs. market-driven innovation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-5098 .- 1368-275X. ; 18:4, s. 289-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research argues that incumbents should respond to disruptive innovation by setting up a separate business unit. This recommendation stems from research predominantly carried out on disruptive technologies in high-tech industries but whether incumbents respond differently to other types of disruptive business model innovations and whether the type of response leads to a difference in performance have not been empirically analysed. By collecting data from 88 strategic business units (SBUs) and dividing the sample into incumbents responding to disruptive technology against those responding to disruptive market-driven innovations, the study shows that the latter type of firms can succeed in managing both disruptive and sustaining innovations without setting up structurally separated business units. We discuss the implications of our results and highlight areas for further research.

  • The teaching and societal services nexus: Academics’ experiences in three disciplines
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Teaching in Higher Education. - Abingdon, Oxon : Informa UK Limited. - 1356-2517 .- 1470-1294. ; 20:2, s. 208-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the perception of academics regarding how their experiences from societal interaction (third mission) inform their teaching and vice versa. We report on a phone survey of Swedish academics in three engineering-related disciplines. The findings show that there is a perceived positive and bidirectional relationship between societal interaction and teaching. Industry-related activities were perceived to inform teaching more than other types of societal interaction. While societal interaction is at large more important for the academics in their search for relevant teaching topics and content, teaching was deemed more important for the implementation of societal interaction. We conclude by proposing that academics creatively (re)combine experiences from third mission and education, often mediated by their research activities.

  • Policy Parsing Panthers at Touché: Ideology and Power Identification in Parliamentary Debates
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - Aachen : RWTH Aachen University. - 1613-0073. ; 3740, s. 3451-3477, s. 3451-3477
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Political debates are vital in shaping public opinion and influencing policy decisions. However, understanding the complex linguistic structures used by politicians to ascertain their orientations and power dynamics can be challenging. In this paper we explore Natural Language Processing techniques for identifying political orientation and power structures in parliamentary debates. We introduce a Located Missing Labels-loss in order to train jointly to predict both power and ideology. Furthermore, our proposed method also trains to predict a third synthetically generated polarity label. Finally, we combine this training method with pre-processing steps including back-translation and meta data inclusion. Our results show that our method manages to improve upon conventional methods of fine-tuning.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Research Technology Management. - Philadelphia, PA : Informa UK Limited. - 0895-6308 .- 1930-0166. ; 59:1, s. 48-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OVERVIEW: Western firms are generally advised to rely on emerging market partners when attempting to develop frugal innovations for these developing markets. Underlying such advice is the idea that the requirements of emerging market consumers may not be familiar to Western firms and local developers will better understand local needs. We propose an alternative approach for high-tech firms-one that relies on home-based breakthrough R&D focused on emerging market needs. Three frugal innovation projects at a Swedish medical devices manufacturer serve to illustrate both how home-based breakthrough R&D can help managers reconceptualize their core products and the contextual factors favoring such an approach.
