    • The high dropout rate of students in vocational education and training (VET) has been considered a serious problem in policy of education in the last decade in Denmark as well as in the other Nordic countries. In the Danish VET system only half of the students, who take up a vocational programme, complete the programme. The dropout rate has stayed on a high level despite a large number of initiatives to increase retention. This article argues, that the problem lies not only with the measures to reduce dropout, but also in the conceptualisation of the dropout phenomenon. We examine the concept of dropout and argue that the concept covers a range of different strategies among students in vocational education. Empirically the article is based on a large interview study among vocational students in Denmark. In addition the article is based on international research that uses a process related concept of dropout, which we connect to research in young peoples' school to work transitions. In this conceptualisation dropout is seen as the result of the interplay over time between the transition system, young people’s conditions of life and young people’s own strategies and choices.

    • Charter tourism as a product: a sociological analysis of agency in the experience economyIn recent years charter tourism as a convenient and cost-effective mode of travelling has been declining. This may be related to dominating societal ideals promoting self-actualization, individual exploration and spontaneity. However, not much is known about the development of ideals and practices among charter tourists. By use of ethnographic fieldwork methodology, including pre-departure and post-travel telephone interviews, this exploratory study investigated a group of Danish charter tourists travelling to Gran Canaria. Results show that the charter tourists were active in navigating between a series of central dilemmas posed by the consumption of a mass product in an individualized societal context, thereby shaping their experiences to form a desirable tourist product.

    • On categorization and symbolic power in social work: The myth of the resourceful parents to children with neuro-psychiatric diagnosesSocial workers often use the term resourceful about a certain group of parents to children with neuro-psychiatric diagnoses, e.g. autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. This paper discusses the consequences of this sort of stereotyping/categorization with particular regard to the collaboration between these parents and the social workers as they meet in the social services system, when the parents apply for help for their children. Drawing upon Pierre Bourdieu, it is suggested that the categorization resourceful is not only overly simplistic and a myth, but is straight out misguiding and complicates the interaction – in fact it represents an act of symbolic power. Based upon a six months long sociological field-work study it is shown, that even though social workers seem to acknowledge the difficult and grueling life-situation of the parents, they are first and foremost perceived as resourceful and knowledgeable but hence also as annoying, insufferable, demanding and basically unjustified, even though they have obvious legal rights. Parents and social workers alike described the collaboration as being conflictual and a struggle and the complex power-relations are discussed in the light of Bourdieu.

    • Self-help and self-censorship: A self-help cultural perspective on organizational silenceThis paper seeks to explain silence in the workplace through an analytical perspective derived from Judith Butlers work on censorship, and in this way suggest an alternative to explanations in the existing literature on employee silence, which are often tied to the actions and motivations of the individual subject. It is thus argued that self-help books can be seen as indicative of a pervasive culture of self-improvement, which among other things promotes the absence of criticism in the workplace. The empirical point of departure for this argument is the two bestselling self-help books The secret by Rhonda Byrne and The 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey. Theoretically, the paper applies Butlers notion of ”implicit censorship” where censorship is understood as productive in the sense of being constitutive of language. Hence, in the analysis it is shown how discursive regimes in self-help literature tend to be constructed in such a way, that explicit criticism cannot emerge as a meaningful activity, and is thus implicitly censored.

    • Ensuring “qualitative quality": Tendencies in English and Scandinavian qualitative methodology literature.A research project concerning the quality of Danish qualitative interview investigations has been conducted at The Danish National Institute of Social Research in Copenhagen (Olsen, 2002a-c). In this article, selected parts of the project are presented. The main theme of the article is qualitative analyses and different - more or less competing - criteria for “qualitative quality”. The article is based on textual analysis of a wide range of English and Scandinavian qualitative methodology literature - approximately 200 books and articles - concerning qualitative analysis strategies, analytic induction versus deduction, coding and conceptualization, generalization and theory related versus theory generating qualitative analyses. In the article focus is also on how to ensure “qualitative quality” and its conceptual foundation. The article is concluded by the author presenting his own quality ensuring proposals.

    • Focussing on construction of questionnaires, the author is answering the following question: H ow are respondents solving semantic and other cognitive tasks, and what are the resulting consequences with regard to questionnaire construction? The article — also comprising research grounded questionnaire construction recommendations developed by the author — is based on textual analysis of a wide range of English quantitative methodology literature problematizing questionnaire construction as arts and crafts striving to convert questionnaire construction into an interdisciplinary science comprising linguistics and cognitive psychology. The author is arguing that respondents, when solving their tasks, should be offered wide-ranging semantic and other cognitive reliefs based on survey researcher's thorough linguistic and psychological expertise.

    • Integration or illusion – a deviance perspectiveDenmark experienced one of its most successful periods of economic growth in 2004– 2008 with a tremendous reduction of unemployment, which in June 2008 was around. 1.5 percent, far below the expected level of structural unemployment. In the wake of this development the lack of utilization of migrants’ educations and skills became, once again, a core concern. The political, societal and academic debate followed to a great extent the traditional top-down approach to the problem and revolved around two axes: 1. How effective the labour market was/is to make use of migrants’ skills. 2. Whether there were patterns of over-education as expression of institutional and societal discrimination. The focus of the present study is, however, quite different: We examine the pattern of deviance in relation to labour market participation (not integration), and instead of searching for explanations for the lack of integration, we attempt to identify and explain the deviance pattern as a product of institutionally inherent possibilities and barriers on the one hand and articulating immigrants as rational actors (not victims) on the other. We argue that deviance is not only a more fruitful theoretical and analytical framework than integration and discrimination. Taking departure in empirical evidence on immigrants’ preferences and behaviour as bounded rational actors, and how they actually articulate their everyday life practical experiences, including adjustment of what they want and what they can, the deviance perspective, we believe, also reduces the theoretical and normative biases, that characterises the discrimination and integration framework, and provide more reliable explanations.
