  • The differences between actions and desires : The role of religious congregations in national crises and disasters
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0966-0879 .- 1468-5973. ; 31:3, s. 441-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last few decades in the handling of ongoing crises and preparing for future crises, governments and other public authorities increasingly emphasize the important role religious organizations can play in crises and disaster management. Considering this development, it is appropriate to ask whether the expectations by policymakers are mirrored by the religious organizations themselves? This article aims to answers this question by studying both the organizations' desired role in time of national crises and disasters and the actual role taken by local congregations in Sweden during the Covid-19 pandemic. It also aims to study whether this differs in relation to organizational differences and religious affiliation. The study clearly shows that 8 out of 10 congregations believe they have an important role to play in the event of a disaster or crisis. However, despite the high level of willingness, the role congregations take may not always mirror the governments expectations. In terms of differences between congregations, although cross-religious differences are noted, the size of the organization is the critical factor. The article concludes by discussing the disparity between policymakers' expectations and the willingness of organizations as well as the complexity of policymakers assuming that non-profit organizations will help unequivocally.

  • Is there a difference in survival between men and women suffering in-hospital cardiac arrest?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Heart & Lung. - : Elsevier BV. - 0147-9563 .- 1527-3288. ; 43:6, s. 510-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To describe in-hospital cardiac arrest (CA) events with regard to sex and to investigate if sex is associated with survival. Background: Previous studies exploring differences between sexes are incongruent with regard to clinical outcomes. In order to provide equality and improve care, further investigations into these aspects are warranted. Methods: This registry study included 286 CAs. To investigate if sex was associated with survival, logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: The proportion of CA with a resuscitation attempt compared to CA without resuscitation was higher among men. There were no associations between sex and survival when controlling for previously known predictors and interaction effects. Conclusions: Sex does not appear to be a predictor for survival among patients suffering CA where resuscitation is attempted. The difference regarding proportion of resuscitation attempts requires more attention. It is important to consider possible interaction effects when studying the sex perspective. • The Family Talk Intervention in Pediatric Oncology : Potential Effects Reported by Parents
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Children. - : MDPI. - 2227-9067. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Childhood cancer impacts the family system and has psychosocial consequences for all family members. For the parents, the ill child, and the siblings to be able to adjust to this challenging situation, the whole family needs access to psychosocial support. However, only a few such family interventions in pediatric oncology have been evaluated. The aim of this study was to explore the potential effects of a family-centered intervention, the Family Talk Intervention (FTI), in pediatric oncology from the parents' perspectives. Methods: A concurrent mixed methods design was used for this study. Data were derived from a pilot study of 26 families recruited from one pediatric oncology center in Sweden. This study focused on questionnaire and interview data from 52 parents. Results: After participation in FTI, the parents felt more satisfied with the conversations within the family about the illness. FTI also contributed to strengthened family togetherness, including more open communication and improved family relations, as described by the parents. Parents further expressed that they felt more empowered in their parenting role following FTI. Conclusions: The findings regarding FTI's ability to improve family communication and family relations, thus strengthening family togetherness in families with childhood cancer, are promising. This provides motivation for a large-scale study of FTIs in pediatric oncology.

  • Supported Visitation in Cases of Violence : Political Intentions and Local Practice in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family. - : Oxford University Press. - 1360-9939 .- 1464-3707. ; 32:3, s. 374-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, supervised visitation has been replaced with a new measure called supported visitation. In the reform process, it was emphasized that if face to face visitation cannot be organized without risk for the child, indirect visitation or no visitation are to be considered better options. The aim of this article is to explore social work practice regarding supported visitation in cases involving violence. It draws on a study of a local visitation centre and the data consists of case files from the social services regarding 37 children where a court ordered visitation support, interviews with seven members of staff, ten parents and three children, and local documents and guidelines. For 18 of the 37 children, case files contained credible information about a history of violence. The study shows that district courts sometimes order visitation support in cases where there is a risk for the child and where in the near future normalization of visitation is unlikely. Thus, the measure of visitation support is sometimes used in a way that was not intended. Regarding social work practice, the analysis indicates that, although the guidelines developed at the local support centre under study adhere to the national policy intentions, both professionals’ validation and invalidation of violence can be seen. For service users previously subjected to violence, the documented court and social services’ practices may actively contribute to children’s and residential parents’ continued vulnerability.

  • Variations in grief, anxiety, depression, and health among family caregivers before and after the death of a close person in the context of palliative home care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Death Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0748-1187 .- 1091-7683. ; 44:9, s. 531-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates longitudinal variations in grief, self-rated health, and symptoms of anxiety and depression among family caregivers in palliative care. Data were taken from a randomized psycho-educational intervention trial and were collected at four time-points; at baseline, upon completion, 2 months later, and 6 months after the patient's death. In total, 117 family caregivers completed all questionnaires. The participants' grief was stable across the measurements, while anxiety, depression, and health varied significantly (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the intervention or control group. In conclusion, grief emerged as a constant phenomenon, distinct from symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Bereavement stressors and psychosocial well-being of young adults following the loss of a parent – A cross-sectional survey
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - : Churchill Livingstone. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 35, s. 33-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The knowledge about young adults who have lost a parent to cancer is limited, and to reach a broader understanding about this group, this study used the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (Stroebe and Schut, 1999) as a theoretical framework. The purpose of this study was to describe loss- and restoration-oriented bereavement stressors and psychosocial wellbeing of young adults following the loss of a parent to cancer. Method: This survey used baseline data from a longitudinal study. Young adults, aged 16–28 years, who lost a parent to cancer more than two months earlier and agreed to participate in support groups held at three palliative care services in Sweden, responded to a comprehensive theory-based study-specific questionnaire. Results: Altogether, 77 young adults (64 women and 13 men) answered the questionnaire an average of five-to-eight months after the loss. Twenty percent (n = 15) had not been aware of their parent's impending death at all or only knew a few hours before the death, and 65% (n = 50) did not expect the death when it occurred. The young adults reported low self-esteem (n = 58, 76%), mild to severe anxiety (n = 55, 74%), mild to severe depression (n = 23, 31%) and low life satisfaction. Conclusion: Young adults reported overall poor psychosocial wellbeing following bereavement. The unexpectedness and unawareness of the parent's imminent death, i.e., loss-oriented bereavement stressors, might influence psychosocial wellbeing. Despite these reports, restoration-oriented stressors, such as support from family and friends, helped them to cope with the loss.

  • Higher Self-Esteem Associated With Less Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression Among Young Adults After the Loss of a Parent to Cancer - A Longitudinal Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Palliative Care. - : Sage Publications. - 0825-8597 .- 2369-5293. ; 37:2, s. 113-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine associations between self-esteem and symptoms of anxiety and depression among young adults who lost a parent to cancer. Methods: Older adolescents and young adults, aged 16 to 28 years, who had lost their parent to cancer and had accepted an invitation to join a support group, completed a questionnaire 5 to 8 months after the loss and a similar questionnaire about 10 months later (follow-up). Of a total of 77 young adults who participated in the study, 56 completed both questionnaires. Self-esteem was measured with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Univariate and multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the associations.Result: Self-esteem was significantly associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression at baseline and at follow-up.Conclusion: This study reveals that self-esteem is a valuable explanatory variable, and that it is associated with both symptoms of anxiety and depression in bereavement. This new knowledge could be used to guide future support to parentally bereaved young adults.

  • Poor Psychosocial Well-Being in the First Year-and-a-Half After Losing a Parent to Cancer - A Longitudinal Study Among Young Adults Participating in Support Groups
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life & Palliative Care. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1552-4256 .- 1552-4264. ; 16:4, s. 330-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate variations in psychosocial well-being over time among young adults who participated in a support group after the death of a parent from cancer. Fifty-five young adults, aged 16-28 years, completed questionnaires that measured self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction at three time-points during the first year-and-one-half after the loss. Results indicated overall poor psychosocial well-being with few increases in psychological health over the study period, despite access to support and social networks. However, these resources may help to prevent major impairments in the participants' future lives.

  • Posttraumatic Growth After Struggling With the Loss of a Parent in Young Adulthood
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Omega. - : Sage Publications. - 0030-2228 .- 1541-3764.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to examine posttraumatic growth and its associations with parental bereavement among adolescents and young adults. Fifty-five young adults who had lost a parent to cancer at least 2 months earlier and were about to attend a support group at a palliative care service were recruited. Data was collected through questionnaires before support group participation, about 5-8 months after the loss and at a 6-month follow-up, about 14-18 months after the loss. The result shows that the young adults experienced posttraumatic growth, mostly in the domains Personal strength and Appreciation of life. Posttraumatic growth was associated with bereavement outcomes, especially life satisfaction, a feeling of meaning in future life and psychological health. The result is of value for health care professionals as it adds information about the importance of supporting constructive rumination to enhance the possibility to positive psychological change after a parent's death.
