  • The hard thing is the changes : The importence of continuity for older men caring for thir wifes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Quality in Ageing and Older Adults. - : Pier Professional Ltd. - 2044-1835 .- 1471-7794 .- 2042-8766. ; 8:2, s. 5-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few studies have been conducted into the contextual and relational aspects of male caregiving that include analysis by gender and family relationships. The aim was to gain understanding of the experience of older men as caregivers for an ill spouse. A narrative approach was adopted for this study. Interviews were conducted with three older men between 65 and 78 years, who had been caring for their wives for between one and 12 years. Two main categories emerged: taking on a new and unfamiliar role, and learning to live with the new role. The results also show how the men seek to maintain continuity in their relationships with the wives they are caring for. The findings can be understood in the light of a major life transition of how older men providing care for a spouse create new roles and how they cope with the changes in the marital relationship. A sense of continuity in the process of caring is important for men to help them find the strength to continue as caregivers.

  • Challenging conceptualisations of work : Revisiting contemporary experiences of return to work and unemployment
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 28:1, s. 81-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article draws on empirically derived illustrations of return to work and unemployment to critically explore how a narrow understanding of work pervades contemporary social policies and programmes. This is particularly relevant in economic and labour market transitions aligned with neoliberalism that individualise the social problem of unemployment and thus restrict occupational possibilities related to work. An overview of how work and related concepts have been conceptualised in occupational science scholarship is presented. After describing the theoretical orientation of the paper, three illustrations derived from a secondary analysis of data from projects conducted in Sweden and the United States are presented. The three empirically grounded illustrations are integrated with theory to highlight tensions between the politically informed structures that shape social policies and programmes and the individual experiences of work, unemployment, and return to work that users and providers of these programmes communicate. By asserting that success in work-related placement programmes is not synonymous with meaningful employment, we attempt to heighten awareness of the potential risks associated with a reliance on measuring work by merely being in paid formal employment.

  • Cognitive challenges in persons with spina bifida : Bearing on urological dysfunctions?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Neurourology and Urodynamics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0733-2467 .- 1520-6777. ; 39:8, s. 2139-2145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To evaluate if adult persons with spina bifida (SB) who have urinary tract complications have cognitive difficulties that can be identified by neuropsychological tests.METHODS: All individuals with SB ≥ 18 years of age registered at a regional outpatient clinic (n = 219) were invited, of which, 154 persons were included. Neuropsychological assessment of their cognitive status was performed with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale®-Fourth Edition: Coding, Block design, Arithmetic's, FAS (word generation), Rey Auditory Verbal Test for learning, and delayed recall 30 min. Bladder and bowel function were assessed with questions used by the Nordic Spinal Cord Injury Registry (NSCIR) in structured interviews, by questionnaires, and by chart reviews.RESULTS: Average neuropsychological test results for this SB population was shown to be approximately 1 SD under the median for the general population. The Coding test showed significantly lower test results as compared with the whole SB group in persons with urinary tract complications, especially urinary tract infections, reduced kidney function, dependent emptying of the bladder, and the bowel and accidental bowel leakage. The Arithmetic's test showed a significant difference between subgroups in all parameters except reduced kidney function whereas the other neuropsychological tests were significantly correlated with some but not all urological parameters.CONCLUSION: We propose neuropsychological testing with primarily two tests to find those persons with SB who, due to cognitive challenges, might need extra support to minimize urological complications.

  • His helping hands-adult daughter's perceptions' of fathers with caregiving responsibility
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 16:2, s. 235-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women's position as informal carers has been taken for granted in social policy and social professions, while relatively few discussions have elaborated on caring as a later life activity for men and the impact on family care. This study explores the processes connected to informal caregiving in later life through the position of adult daughters of older fathers engaged with long-term caregiving responsibilities for a partner. A sample of eight daughters, with fathers having primary caregiving responsibility for their ill partners was recruited and in-depth interviews were carried out and analysed according to qualitative procedures. The daughters' descriptions of their relationships with their fathers show that being an older man who engages in caring can have a positive outcome on relations. Even if some of the daughters have doubts about their fathers “masculine authenticity”, all of them appear to cherish “his helping hands” as a carer and closer more intimate relationships with their fathers. Caring for an old and frail spouse may potentially present alternative ways of being a man beyond traditional ‘male activities’ and that caring might also sometimes involve a re-construction of gender identities. It is suggested that social work professionals may use a gendered understanding to assess and work strategically with daughters and other family members who support caring fathers.

  • Patientorganisationer som företräder riskgrupper under covid-19-pandemin : förändringar i organisation och relation till andra aktörer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - : Socialmedicinsk tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 98:1, s. 38-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Belonging to a community of care : Mothers’ experiences of online peer support groups for parents having lost a child with congenital heart defects
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Death Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0748-1187 .- 1091-7683. ; 46:7, s. 1741-1749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to study mothers’ experiences of online peer support groups after the death of a child. Participants (N = 8) were recruited through a newsletter for the Swedish association for families/children with heart defects, and two closed support groups on Facebook (900 and 100 members) and interviewed by telephone. Transcripts were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The groups were available around the clock, regardless of support need, and mothers joined both to receive and provide support. Participation in online peer support groups may provide a sense of belonging to a caring community and serve as a valuable complement to healthcare.

  • Methods and strategies to promote academic literacies in health professions : a scoping review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Education. - : BioMed Central. - 1472-6920. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Universities enroll students from diverse backgrounds every year, with 300 million students expected in higher education by 2025. However, with widening participation, increasing numbers of students enrolling in higher health education and future health professions will be underprepared to meet demands of academic literacies, i.e. ability to read, interpret and critically evaluate academic texts and communicating the understanding verbally or in writing. The aim of this scoping review was to describe and explore methods and strategies to promote development of academic literacies.RESULTS: Thirty-one relevant studies were included and analyzed according to scoping review guidelines. The results showed four strategies: (1) integrating learning activities to develop academic literacies in the regular curriculum, (2) changing the course design with new methods for teaching and learning, (3) establish collaborations amongst academics and librarian faculty, and (4) adding courses or foundation year focusing on development of academic literacies. The results are discussed in light of the United Nations Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development, Goal 4, Quality Education, and widening participation.CONCLUSIONS: Aspects of widening participation and inclusion in higher education have been debated, and increasing numbers of students from diverse backgrounds are expected to enter health studies in higher education. We encourage integration of teaching and learning activities targeting parallel learning of course materials and development of academic literacies, beyond study skills. Embracing epistemic complexity and diversity as well as choosing strategic work with academic literacies may provide a starting point toward realizing sustainable development goals and widening participation.

  • An assessment form for clinical nursing education : a Delphi study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Wiley. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 48:3, s. 291-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim. This paper reports a study to develop further the existing assessment form and to capture new aspects of assessment for the nursing profession of the future for inclusion in the form. Background. Since nursing education became part of the higher education system, the assessment of clinical periods of the programme has become more complicated and requirements are more demanding. Changes in the health care sector, such as demographic changes and shorter hospitalization, create demands upon the independent nursing role of the future. Many educational documents, such as an assessment form, must continuously be up-dated and adapted to changes in society. Method. A Delphi study concerning the content of this assessment form was carried out using two rounds. Through this process, an expert panel gave their opinions about the form and possible changes to it. Results. There was general acceptance of the content in the current assessment form. Suggested changes were the addition of two factors concerning collaboration with the family and society, and development of the student's independence. Two new area headings were suggested: one about ability to use the nursing process, and the other about development of a professional stance. Conclusions. The suggested changes in the assessment form match expected changes in the health care sector and the demands of an academic nursing education

  • Evaluation by nurses and students of a new assessment form for clinical nursing education.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 14:2, s. 89-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An assessment form was developed, based on Swedish higher education regulations and international guidelines for nursing education, to be used during clinical education regardless of the level of the programme or clinical specialty. Nurses who acted as supervisors for students used the form for continuous and formal assessment, and students used it for self-assessment. Once developed, the assessment form covered 18 professional and academic areas. After one semester nurses (n = 323) and students (n = 154) from two university colleges evaluated their experiences of using the form by answering a questionnaire. In addition, the completed assessment forms filled in by the nurses were reviewed and analysed. The evaluation showed that the nurses and the students considered the assessment form highly valuable. Both groups believed that the form highlighted the requirements for clinical education and was useful in assessing the students' development. Almost all 18 factors were found to be important to assess. Least important and most difficult to assess were 'the use of research and developmental work' and 'the ability to inform and teach co-workers and students'. Some areas that were regarded as difficult to assess were also marked by the nurses in the assessment form as 'not possible or relevant to assess'. The form was found to be useful in assessing students' development towards the goals of nursing education. The study also revealed that essential areas in nursing education have unclear educational demands for those involved.
