- The centre of Child and Youth Studies at University West works strategically with other regional research environments and institutions that study children, youths and young adults. The goal of our research centre is to spread knowledge about the social conditions under which children and young people live, thereby strengthening their position in society. Collaboration with external research environments is one of the ways that our research domain works to reach that goal. Partnerships are formed through a model that strives to create good conditions for both our research and that of our partners. This model is grounded in a dialogue between research partners who work together to select areas of interest and formulate hypotheses. These research projects are financed equally by the university and our partners. The following report is the result of one of these research partnerships.Advanced industrial society has been replaced by a society based upon knowledge and information where industrial work/manufacturing becomes less common. Västervik is one of the small towns in Sweden whose main industries have closed down or severely decreased their workforce during the last few decades of great structural change. The groups in the job market that have been most affected by these changes are young men and women, something which is evident in the high unemployment rates among the young population. The purpose of this study was to investigate young people’s own experiences and thoughts regarding their own situation as jobseekers in the municipality of Västervik. How do they see themselves and the situation they find themselves in? The narratives were collected in the form of 18 in-depth interviews with young men and women between the ages of 19-25, all them registered at the job center in Västervik. In the report different aspects of their situation are discussed, such as: the young people’s relation to their hometown, their thoughts on the meaning and value of work, the role of education, the economic, social and emotional consequences of unemployment, and their experiences of taking part in various programs for unemployed. The narratives we have encountered can be seen as having some general validity in the sense that many of their experiences are probably shared by other unemployed young people in other locations in Sweden, but Västervik is also a specific town with a specific history and specific conditions.The young men and women have an ambivalent relationship to their hometown. On the one hand they want to start a life in the same location, but on the other, the future there is seen as very uncertain. Many of those interviewed would like to have the kind of industrial jobs that their parents have and grandparents experienced, but which are nowadays less and less common. The norm of a fulltime job is strong among the young men and women – something which strengthens the image of the evident dissonance between their seemingly traditional dreams and intentions and the structures of possibilities the municipality and community suggest for them. Connected to this are the ways the young people must relate to the postindustrial demands of employability – which means the ability to enterprise and market oneself on a competitive market. These demands presuppose abilities that are more likely to be socialized and practiced in certain social environments rather than in others, and the majority of the young men and women interviewed have a background in aworking class environment where these values and approaches are far from selfevident.The socioeconomic marginalization that these young people experienceresults in much curtailed possibilities for a period of youthful experimentation aswell as for an expected adulthood. Being unemployed means one has difficulty ingaining the status of an adult, but due to economic shortages, there are also limits to how much they can take part in this experimental lifestyle that characterizes youth. The young men and women’s situation can thereby be seen as a grey zone; they are neither young nor adults in the normative sense. In some of the narratives the young people express critical thoughts with regard to the social conditions that their difficult situation can be related to. By extension, expressing these thoughts and stating their opinion can be strengthening and mobilizing for them, both as individuals and as a group. Insights may be gained about unemployment as a shared experience rather than as a personal failure

Models of teamwork: ideal or not? : A critical study of theoretical team models

- Purpose - There is a tendency in team research to employ concepts of stepwise models, reachingfrom the primitive to the excellent, to suggest that a higher level of evolution is better than the basic and simple. This tendency includes typologies of teams. This article aims to question the relevance of this view.Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected in three steps. In the first step, articles and books analyzing teams and teamwork from stepwise analytical models were collected. In the second step the collected data were classified into different themes. Each stepwise model was classified into one essential denomination. This classification resulted in eight themes. In the third step each theme was analyzed, which led to the fusion of some of the themes.Findings - The conclusion is that a synchronous, complementary or mature team is not necessarily optimal. Contrary to this, a differentiated, sequential or multi team approach can be optimal for some purposes. Team research needs to establish a more open, inductive and critical attitude than at present.Originality/value - The paper highlights the need to observe and use team theories in a balanced and critical way.

- Contemporary research on so-called Nordic branding has provided crucial insights into the social power of states and how various actors use and circulate ‘progressive’ nation brand tropes for political and commercial goals. Hitherto, the literature on Nordic branding has focused on a wide range of substantive issues, among other things, human rights, gender equality, social welfare and foreign aid, but considerably less attention has been paid to the topic of security. The present article adds to a small but established literature on how the security sphere is increasingly entangled with nation branding. In the Nordic region, we argue, the latter is particularly evident in the case of Sweden – one of the world’s largest per-capita arms exporters in the post-Cold War era but also a country known and often revered for its peaceful and progressive image. Focusing on the case of Sweden, the article contributes to knowledge of how defence industry-related actors (both public and private) draw on and frame nation branding tropes to sell and legitimise their products and services to both insiders (domestic constituents) and outsiders (the global security market).

- Den här avhandlingen utgår ifrån ett professionsorienterat perspektiv på användning av informationssystem. Informationssystem för kunskapsintegrering i professionsorienterade arbetspraktiker innebär en dynamik för styrning och organisation där den professionsorienterade arbetspraktiken och informationssystem kan utvecklas tillsammans. Avhandlingen bygger på studier av två olika professionsorienterade arbetspraktiker, flygplansunderhåll och sjukvård, som båda kan karaktäriseras som tids- och livskritiska. De två professionsorienterade arbetspraktikerna kan härledas till två olika professionstyper. De fyra forskningsfrågorna i denna avhandling är: Vilken betydelse har egenskaper för T- respektive L-professioner för användning av informationssystem? Vilka generella utmaningar kan härledas ur professioners användning av informationssystem? Vilken betydelse har ledning och organisation av T- respektive L-professioner för användning av informationssystem? Hur kan användning av informationssystem organiseras för att möjliggöra kunskapsintegrering i professionsorienterade praktiker? Två fallstudier med etnografiska inslag har genomförts där två olika professionstyper utgör två definierade fall. Inledningsvis var dessa studier av en induktiv och explorativ karaktär, för att sedan bli mer förklarande och i slutskedet också något normerande. Den ena studien gjordes inom flygplansunderhållet vid det svenska flygvapnet, F7 i samverkan med Volvo Aero Corporation. Den andra studien har gjorts inom akutsjukvåren i NU-sjukvården, Västra Götaland. Bidraget i avhandlingen avser att visa att professioners egenskaper har betydelse för tillit, meningsskapande och engagemang både för, och i, användning av informationssystem. Avhandlingen visar behovet av att se strukturer mellan professioner och ledning som avgörande för kunskapsintegrering med informationssystem, där ett nytt integrerat ledarskap föreslås. Detta nya integrerade ledarskap är viktigt för att styra kunskaps¬integrering. Dessutom föreslår avhandlingen en ny ansats för kunskaps-integrering för att överbrygga organiska begränsningar och hinder. Denna ansats kallas uppgörelser. Uppgörelser i professionsorienterade arbetspraktiker är viktiga för att kunna utveckla befintlig och kommande användning av informationssystem samt att integrera informationssystem i det komplexa arbetet så att det kan utföras på ett effektivt sätt med hög kvalitet.

- Purpose – The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about learning linked to the film industry by investigating how film producers reason about learning for and in the profession. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on semi-structured interviews with twenty film producers, both university and workplace trained (UWT) and workplace trained (WT). The content analysis is based on the transcribed dialogues. The study is empirical, explorative and qualitative.Findings – The interviewees consider networks to be of utmost importance for gaining entrance to and continuously finding work in the film industry. They also reason about required knowing and what learning practices are available. Although formal education is not advocated by all, it can hold intrinsic value for the individual. Traditions of learning are being scrutinized and critical reflection is replacing naivety and emotionality.Practical implications – Different aims regarding learning in the formal education system and film industry result in a gap which needs to be bridged in order to challenge conserving and reproducing patterns of learning. Collaboration is suggested as a solution benefiting both the individual learner and the film industry. The resulting knowledge from this study can be used by the formal education system and the film industry when developing forms for collaboration surrounding learners of film production. Originality/value – The focus presented in this paper of learning in and for film production has been sparingly addressed in previous research.
