  • Sustainability reporting as a way to foster entrepreneurial universities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 25th Annual EurOMA Conference - To Serve, to Produce and to Servitize in the Era of Networks, Big Data and Analytics, Budapest, June 24-26, 2018..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a major role in the development of societies. In the last decades, there has been an increasing interest on the commercialisation of knowledge by universities for economic development that lead to the emergence of the term “Entrepreneurial University”. This study aims to report the sustainability efforts of the University of Gävle, Sweden by applying a systematic tool, Graphical Assessment of Sustainability in Universities (GASU). This study highlights sustainability reporting as a way to improve communication practices between universities and stakeholder. The systematic and holistic assessment of HEIs gives insights of collaboration opportunities and by that foster their entrepreneurial journey.

  • Collaboration for sustainability : A systems-oriented holistic perspective
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Companies have been under increasing pressure to engage with stakeholders to advance their sustainability engagement. Collaboration has been recognised as a key element in such efforts. While the need for collaboration among organisations is increasingly recognised, there is still a need to better understand with whom companies collaborate, and how stakeholders might influence the process. This study analyses how companies collaborate in regards to sustainability and highlights the need to differentiate between influence on stakeholders and importance when establishing collaboration partnerships. This research proposes a collaboration for sustainability model including internal and external stakeholders on the vertical and horizontal level.

  • Why International Exchanges at Undergraduate Level?
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This paper concerns the value of international exchanges at Universities. It carries forward the exploration of a link between international exchanges and the quality of higher education. The method used is based on a description of my own experience as an international departmental co-ordinator and a teacher, discussions with teachers and students who have been on exchange programmes and a critical reflection on the work that has been done at The Department of Business Administration, University of Gävle. The study showed that teachers´ and students´ exchange creates creativity and curiosity and makes the quality of teaching better by developing knowledge from different perspectives. That means, students/teachers get knowledge i.e. on using other pedagogical methods and languages and in organising and keeping new relations. The exchange develops the social skills of teachers and students and the understanding between people from different societies. To summarize, international exchange legitimises the study programs offered in different places to the international scientific society. Teachers and students gain self-confidence on developing networks and being international citizens. For this reason, it is particularly important to consider the importance of international exchange programmes and thus create creative conditions for successful and sustainable development of higher education.

  • Exploring technology paths: The development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden 2005-2020
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 4th European Meeting on Applied Evolutionary Economics (EMAEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we use a socio-technical scenario approach to illustrate how the development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden can be influenced by different policy choices. With the present situation as a starting point, we introduce different feasible scenarios for the development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden from 2005-2020. The scenario policies differ mainly on two points: (i) the commitment and economic incentives aiming at a rapid introduction of existing alternative transport fuels and (ii) the economic resources allocated to R&D of new, more efficient alternatives. The main focus on the first point in our market-oriented scenario and on the second in our technology-oriented scenario has implications for the development of the stocks and structures of the socio-techno-environmental system (STE-system).A first phase in the development is seen between 2005 and 2010. In the market-oriented scenario, a domestic production and a relatively widespread use of alternative transport fuels create advocates for these alternatives among producers and users. Limited explicit knowledge is gained, but legitimacy for alternatives to petrol and diesel is created. Physical artefacts are adjusted to the present alternative fuels, which are more similar to petrol and diesel than to new alternatives. In the technology-oriented scenario authorities and researchers are key actors. A high technical competence is built up in connection with pilot production plants for new alternative fuels. Both petrol and diesel are questioned, while the early alternatives are criticised for being too costly and having limited potential. A second phase, between 2011 and 2020, begins with a bifurcation of both scenarios, where one path from each is characterised by stagnation and one from each is characterised by growth, with regard to the potential for large-scale introduction of biofuels or other renewable fuels in Sweden. Our four scenarios, ending in 2020, can be seen as somewhat extreme examples of feasible outcomes resulting from policy choices made today. Numerous stocks and structures within the STE-system are affected and interact, to determine further changes of the system. In the market-oriented scenario, we illustrate consequences of breaking the dominance of entrenched technologies and demonstrating a growing market potential for alternative fuels and vehicles, while we in the technology-oriented scenario point out the value of keeping variety among niches at the early stage of a transition. The latter may add to the capability to respond to exogenous shifts in a way that is beneficial for the transition.

  • Human Resource Provision and Capacity Development : Recent Initiatives at Lantmäteriet in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the FIG Working Week 2015. - Copenhagen : International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). - 9788792853356
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Securing human resources (HR), building capacity, and implementing the potential of existingstaff are vital for the development of any organisation or company, including the landsurveying, cadastral and land management sectors. This raises questions concerning how tocompete with others and what is the necessary level of capacity among current and futureemployees. Let us ask ourselves: who wants to become a surveyor today, and what makes himor her stay within the business? These issues seem to be familiar to many of the authoritiesand companies in our professional field around the world. There is likely a range of differentanswers depending on country-specific aspects.Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority) alone estimatesa need for a hundred new employees annually over the next years in order to manage theongoing change of generations and the increasing demand for services within certain areas. Inaddition, most municipalities and various regional and national authorities having landsurveyors in their workforce are looking for new staff to their organisations. Besides thisdemand from the public sector, private companies within the property business are also inneed of new staff. A major challenge is hence finding efficient ways to recruit new cadastralsurveyors, geodesists, geodata specialists, lawyers, etc., and to keep them for a significantperiod of time. Lantmäteriet has therefore taken various initiatives during the last few years. Some activities target the whole organisation, while others are tailor-made to fit particularbranches. This paper presents several current and recent initiatives regarding HR provision and capacitydevelopment affecting Lantmäteriet’s personnel. Examples are promotion activities atschools, teaching support to universities, internal training for new staff, continuous learningfor experienced staff, mentorships, talent development programmes, and networking withother authorities. The paper also touches upon impacts so far and what is anticipated for thecoming years.

  • Competition and co-evolution among contenders: The development of alternative transport fuels in Sweden 1974-2004
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 4th European Meeting on Applied Evolutionary Economics (EMAEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Building on previous research, we further develop a theoretical framework for transition analysis. In particular, we are interested in the forces that guide the direction of change. We differentiate between exogenous and endogenous change where the latter can be described by the cumulative build-up of stocks and structures, which create path dependence, within a socio-technical system. Using this theoretical framework we discuss the relationship between different emerging technological alternatives to an incumbent technology, their competition and co-evolution, and their roles as bridges and dead-ends in a transition process. We then describe and analyse an early period of an ongoing transition in the road transport sector: the history of alternative transport fuels in Sweden 1974 to 2004.
