  • Applying the PDSA cycle to a group activity promoting lifestyle change for the active ageing of older Thai adults - a focused ethnography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Geriatrics. - : NLM (Medline). - 1471-2318 .- 1471-2318. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The proportion of the older Thai population is increasing rapidly. Lifestyle may impact active ageing in later life. Interventions that empower older Thai adults to initiate and carry out lifestyle changes are needed. This study applied the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, a tool for improving lifestyle changes, with the aim of exploring interactions among older Thai adults when participating in group activities. METHOD: Focused ethnography was used based on participant observations, field notes and video recordings of 15 older Thai adults aged 62-78 years. RESULTS: Older Thai adults faced difficulties at the beginning since they were unfamiliar with initiating and carrying out lifestyle changes according to the PDSA concept. This provided a learning opportunity enabling older Thai adults to reach their individual goals of lifestyle change. CONCLUSIONS: The PDSA cycle has the potential to empower older adults in group contexts to promote lifestyle changes related to active ageing.

  • Striving to Make a Positive Difference : School Nurses’ Experiences of Promoting the Health and Well-Being of Adolescent Girls
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of School Nursing. - : Sage Publications. - 1059-8405 .- 1546-8364. ; 30:5, s. 358-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, school nurses are part of the School Health Service with the main objective of health promotion to support students’ health and attainment of educational goals. The aim in this phenomenological study was to illuminate the experiences of school nurses in promoting the health and well-being of adolescent girls. Seventeen school nurses were interviewed, both in groups and individually, to facilitate personal disclosure and expressions from their lived experiences. To achieve their goal of improving the health of adolescent girls, school nurses require flexibility in their approach and in endeavoring to make a positive difference they experience many challenges. This study concluded that school nurses can tactfully provide adolescent girls with knowledge and health guidance adjusted to individual needs and empowering the individual girl to participate in her own health process.

  • Predictive regulation in affective and adaptive behaviour : An allostatic-cybernetics perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advanced Research on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures. - Sweden : IGI Global. - 9781522519485 - 9781522519478 - 1522519475 ; , s. 149-176
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, different notions of allostasis (the process of achieving stability through change ) as they apply to adaptive behavior are presented. The authors discuss how notions of allostasis can be usefully applied to Cybernetics-based homeostatic systems. Particular emphasis is placed upon affective states - motivational and emotional - and, above all, the notion of 'predictive' regulation, as distinct from forms of 'reactive' regulation, in homeostatic systems. The authors focus here on Ashby's ultrastability concept that entails behavior change for correcting homeostatic errors (deviations from the healthy range of essential, physiological, variables). The authors consider how the ultrastability concept can be broadened to incorporate allostatic mechanisms and how they may enhance adaptive physiological and behavioral activity. Finally, this chapter references different Cybernetics frameworks that incorporate the notion of allostasis. The article then attempts to untangle how the given perspectives fit into the 'allostatic ultrastable systems' framework postulated.

  • Older twins´ experiences of the relationship with their co-twin over the life course
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - USA : Elsevier BV. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 26:2, s. 119-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on 35 life stories of aging twins, this study focuses on personal experiences and recollections of their relationships with the co-twin over the life-course. The participants are part of two longitudinal Swedish twin studies on aging, SATSA and Gender. In the narrative analysis, three relationship patterns, labeled 'nurturing', 'draining', and 'superficial', emerged, pointing to qualitative aspects in the co-twin relationship. The dominating aspect was emotional closeness, which differed in the three relationship patterns. In the nurturing twin relationship pattern, emotional closeness was experienced as intimacy and yet independence, while in the draining relationship pattern it was experienced as dependence. The superficial twin relationship was experienced as distant and lacking in emotional involvement. Most of the relationship patterns seemed to remain the same throughout life. However, seen from a life course perspective, this study pointed to complexity and diversity in lifelong twin relationships.

  • We are not as alike as you think – sense of individuality within the co-twin relationship
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 27:4, s. 339-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have explored how older twins experience and describe themselves in relation to their co-twin. The life stories of 20 older twins were analyzed with narrative analysis. Results showed that the twinsdescribed themselves from the point of differences in relation to the co-twin. This was based on experiences of how other people viewed them as alike, as well as on life events along the life course, which contributed to the perception of oneself as an individual in relation to the co-twin. The emphasis on unlikeness was therefore interpreted as a way of trying to establish a position as an individual within theco-twin relationship and to assert ones individuality to the rest of the social environment. To claim oneself as an individual was an ongoing identity work along the life course.

  • A holistic approach to acquisition of strategic resources
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Industrial Training. - : Emerald. - 0309-0590 .- 1758-7425. ; 31:8, s. 660-677
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this article is to provide a holistic framework for the acquisition of strategic resources.Design/methodology/approach: The literature dealing with resource creation is reviewed and analyzed from a resource-based point of view. The major methods of acquiring resources are identified through the literature review and the applicability of the framework proposed is illustrated with an empirical example.Findings: Three ways of acquiring strategic resources are identified-- direct investments, organizational processes, and product market positioning. All three ways of acquisition can be intentional or unintentional. Arguments for using this six-dimension scale are provided through deductive reasoning, literature review, and the empirical example.Research implications/limitations: The study identifies the six dimensions of strategic resource acquisition. However, integration of these dimensions is not a subject addressed in this study. Cluster analysis of companies according to these dimensions could enhance our understanding of the characteristics of companies regarding resource acquisition.Originality/value: Whereas previous studies have generally used a single-theory approach, this study highlights the importance of having a holistic outlook when analyzing resource-based competitive advantages.

  • How and what to imitate? : A sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Strategic Change. - : Wiley. - 1086-1718 .- 1099-1697. ; 16:6, s. 271-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in competitiveness generally focuses on how competitive advantages can be developed. This is an important area of research, but as a consequence the process of imitation of competitive advantages has become a neglected area of research.A conceptual sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages is presented. The model mainly draws on resource-based theory, provides a holistic view of the imitation process, identifies different hindrances to imitation of competitive advantages, and presents arguments for the scheme chosen.

  • Reflect and learn together - when two supervisors interact in the learning support process of nurse education
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 20:2, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim  To describe the importance of supervisors working together in supporting the learning process of nurse students through reflective caring science supervision. Background  A supervision model has been developed in order to meet the need for interweaving theory and practice. The model is characterized by learning reflection in caring science. A unique aspect of the present project was that the student groups were led by a teacher and a nurse.Method  Data were collected through interviews with the supervisors. The analysis was performed with a phenomenological approach. Results  The results showed that theory and practice can be made more tangible and interwoven by using two supervisors in a dual supervision. The essential structure is built on the constituents ‘Reflection as Learning Support’, ‘Interweaving Caring Science with the Patient’s Narrative’, ‘The Student as a Learning Subject’ and ‘The Learning Environment of Supervision’.Conclusion  The study concludes that supervision in pairs provides unique possibilities for interweaving and developing theory and practice.Implications for nursing management  The supervision model offers unique opportunities for cooperation, for the development of theory and practice and for the development of the professional roll of nurses and teachers.

  • Nursing students' assessment of the learning environment in different clinical settings
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education in Practice. - : Elsevier. - 1471-5953 .- 1873-5223. ; 14:3, s. 304-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Nursing students perform their clinical practice in different types of clinical settings. The clinical learning environment is important for students to be able to achieve desired learning outcomes. Knowledge is lacking about the learning environment in different clinical settings.AIM: The aim was to compare the learning environment in different clinical settings from the perspective of the nursing students.DESIGN: A cross-sectional study with comparative design was conducted.METHOD: Data was collected from 185 nursing students at three universities by means of a questionnaire involving the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher (CLES + T) evaluation scale. An open-ended question was added in order to ascertain reasons for dissatisfaction with the clinical placement.RESULTS: The nursing students' satisfaction with the placement did not differ between clinical settings. However, those with clinical placement in hospital departments agreed more strongly that sufficient meaningful learning situations occurred and that learning situations were multi-dimensional. Some students reported that the character of the clinical setting made it difficult to achieve the learning objectives.CONCLUSION: In the planning of the clinical placement, attention must be paid to whether the setting offers the student a meaningful learning situation where the appropriate learning outcome may be achieved.
