    • The aim of the study was to describe orthopaedic patients' assessments of how individuality in patient care was supported during specific nursing interventions and how that individuality was perceived during hospitalisation. Orthopaedic inpatients (370) from two central county and two county hospitals in Sweden were surveyed using the Individualised Care Scale (ICS) during 2004/2005, (response rate 74% n = 274). The data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Eighty-six percent of the respondents stated that it was very important to be treated as an individual or unique person and 59% experienced this type of care. The lowest rated assessments concerned the personal life situation and the highest were concerned with the clinical situation and the decisional control over care. This analysis of patient assessments of individualised nursing care can be used to implement changes to individualise care processes in orthopaedic wards. This will be useful in the evaluation of health care quality improvement, planning and personnel management. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • We used a 14-item patient questionnaire, Strategic and Clinical Quality Indicators in Postoperative Pain Management, to describe how orthopaedic patients assessed the quality of care they received. The patients highest and lowest assessments were compared to assessments by other groups of surgical patients as reported in studies being published. Our study included 300 inpatients from four different orthopaedic wards in two county councils in Sweden. Patients answered a questionnaire on the day of discharge. The response rate was 74%, and 44% of the respondents were male. Elective surgery was the main reason for admission, and the mean length of stay was 7.3 days. One of the items rated highest was that pain relief was given quickly when requested. A literature review showed that this item also received a high rating in other studies using the same patient questionnaire. The item rated lowest concerned the regular use of a pain assessment instrument, which also received a low rating from patient groups other than the orthopaedics in this study. In conclusion, we found that orthopaedic patients and other groups of surgical patients gave similar assessments concerning the highest and lowest assessments of postoperative pain management. Nevertheless, further improvement is needed. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • Aim. To compare English, Finnish, Greek and Swedish orthopaedic and trauma patients perceptions of nursing care received during hospitalisation. Background. Patient perceptions are important when evaluating nursing care delivery. Evaluations usually take place sub-nationally though European citizens may be treated throughout the European Union. International comparative studies are possible because of the universal nature and philosophical roots of quality in nursing care. They are needed to assist in improving care outcomes. Design. A cross-sectional, comparative study design was used. Method. The Schmidt Perception of Nursing Care Survey was used to obtain data from orthopaedic and trauma patients in acute hospitals in four countries: Finland (n = 425, response rate 85%), Greece (n = 315, 86%), Sweden (n = 218, 73%) and UK (n = 135, 85%). Data were first analysed using descriptive statistics, then between-country comparisons were computed inferentially using a one-way analysis of variance and a univariate analysis of covariance. Results. Between-country differences were found in patients perceptions of the nursing care received. Over the whole Schmidt Perception of Nursing Care Survey the Swedish and Finnish patients gave their care the highest assessments and the Greek patients the lowest. The same trend was seen in each of the four sub-scales: Seeing The Individual Patient, Explaining, Responding and Watching. Responding was given the highest assessments in each participating country and Seeing the Individual Patient the lowest except in Greece. Conclusions. Further research is needed to consider whether the between-country differences found are caused by differences between cultures, nursing practices, roles of healthcare personnel or patients in the different countries. The Schmidt Perception of Nursing Care Survey is suitable for the assessment of European orthopaedic and trauma patients perceptions of nursing care received during hospitalisation. Relevance to clinical practice. The results are useful in evaluating and developing nursing care in hospitals from different European countries.

    • Background: Although individualised nursing care is considered a core value in nursing in different countries, international comparative studies in this area are rare. In Western countries, common hospitalised patients, e.g. orthopaedic patients, often perceive health care as impersonal rather than individualised; a term which may also have different connotations in different cultures. Objectives: To describe and compare orthopaedic and trauma patients perceptions of individuality in their care in four European countries. Design: A cross-sectional comparative study. Settings: 24 orthopaedic and trauma wards in 13 acute care hospitals. Participants: Data were collected from orthopaedic and trauma patients in Finland (n = 425, response rate 85%), Greece (n = 315, 86%), Sweden (n = 218, 73%) and UK (n = 135, 58%) between March 2005 and December 2006. Methods: Questionnaire survey data using the Individualised Care Scale (ICS) were obtained and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics including frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, 95% confidence intervals (CI), one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi(2) statistics and univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: Patients perceived that nurses generally supported their individuality during specific nursing interventions and perceived individuality in their care. There were some between-country differences in the results. Patients individuality in the clinical situation and in decisional control over their care were also generally well supported and taken into account. However, patients personal life situation was not supported well through nursing interventions and these patients perceived lower levels of individualised care. Conclusions: North-South axis differences in patients perceptions of individualised care may be attributed to the way nursing care is defined and organised in different European countries. Differences may be due to the differences in regional samples, and so no firm conclusions can be made. Further research will be needed to examine the effect of patient characteristics and health care organisation variables in association with patients perceptions of individualised care.

    • BACKGROUND: As guardians of the public interest, auditors represent a unique occupational group. The group that has shown to experience high level of stress and overload is often being associated with environmentally imposed responsibility as well as organizationally imposed performance demands. It is the latter aspects, represented by the concept of organizational culture, that is being highlighted in this paper and its relationship to auditor’s well-beingOBJECTIVES: The paper aims to explore organizational culture as an antecedent of auditors’ well-being, which is assumed to have important consequences for the quality of auditors’ work.METHODS: This study is based on a survey of 207 Swedish auditors. Using established and validated instruments measuring aspects of organizational culture and personal well-being, the study employed correlations and multiple regression analysis in testing the relationship between the two.RESULTS: The results of the study suggest that an increasing degree of collectivistic organizational culture has a positive relationship with three aspects of well-being: Job satisfaction, life balance and life satisfaction.CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first attempt to explore well-being of auditors and its antecedents represented by organizational culture. Contrary to the expectation that auditors take an individualistic approach to their work, this study establishes that auditors feel best in a work environment characterized by a collectivist organizational culture.

    • This paper explores whether and in what way “dual learning” can develop understanding of the relationship between structure/judgement and explores audit student’s perceptions of the audit profession. The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) module, serving as a tool of enabling dual learning, represents the context for this exploration. The study is based on a focus group and individual interviews conducted with students performing their WIL. Our data and its analysis indicates that when in a WIL context, students develop awareness of the use of standards and checklists on the one hand, and the importance of discretional judgement on the other. Based on these results, we theorise as to how dual learning manifests itself in students’ experiences and understanding of the relationship between structure and judgement.

    • In recent years, the local government sector in European countries has undergone important changes involving, among other things, the externalisation of local public service provision through various forms of corporatisation, public-public collaboration, public-private partnerships and contracting out. An important consequence of these institutional changes has been the recasting of local governance systems through the need for increased cooperation between public and private actors. This article addresses these matters with comparative reference to the experience in Italy and Sweden. In doing so, it considers local governments in their constitutional and legal contexts, leading to more detailed discussions of their externalisation initiatives and resultant organisational forms and governance arrangements. Issues of ownership have been important concerning the significance of 'community' and 'place' in the management of public affairs. © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

    • Research SummaryThis study explains the conditions under which new venture boards are less or more culturally diverse in terms of their directors' country of birth. Longitudinal data on 5,515 Swedish ventures suggest that most directors are recruited from founders' proximate social settings?neighborhoods in which they reside and past workplaces?and that diversity levels in these social settings strongly predict the national culture diversity in venture boards. Given the rapid internationalization of workplaces and regions around the world, this paper provides important clues regarding how culturally diverse upper echelons are being incorporated into the organizational design of new ventures.Managerial SummaryMost New Venture Boards exhibit limited diversity in terms of their directors' country of birth, as they are drawn from the venture founders' network. Yet, some new venture boards are indeed born diverse. Our study reveals that founders with prior exposure to culturally diverse workplaces and residential neighborhoods are much more likely to design a culturally diverse board at founding. Given the rapid internationalization of workplaces and regions in most countries around the world, our paper provides important clues regarding how national culture diversity in top management emerges and is being incorporated into the organizational design of new ventures.
