  • Why nature matters : A systematic review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BioScience. - : Oxford University Press. - 0006-3568 .- 1525-3244. ; 74:1, s. 25-43
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we present results from a literature review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values of nature conducted for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, as part of the Methodological Assessment of the Diverse Values and Valuations of Nature. We identify the most frequently recurring meanings in the heterogeneous use of different value types and their association with worldviews and other key concepts. From frequent uses, we determine a core meaning for each value type, which is sufficiently inclusive to serve as an umbrella over different understandings in the literature and specific enough to help highlight its difference from the other types of values. Finally, we discuss convergences, overlapping areas, and fuzzy boundaries between different value types to facilitate dialogue, reduce misunderstandings, and improve the methods for valuation of nature's contributions to people, including ecosystem services, to inform policy and direct future research.

  • Older patients' perspectives on mealtimes in hospitals : a scoping review of qualitative studies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 35:2, s. 390-404
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing age of populations throughout the world means that healthcare services are faced with new challenges, not least regarding the provision of food during hospital stay. There is a lack of knowledge of how hospital mealtimes are experienced by older patients, and so the aim of this article was to review current knowledge regarding mealtimes in hospitals from the perspectives of older patients. A literature search was performed using seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Sociological Abstracts, SweMed+, ASSIA and CINAHL with no limits regarding publication date. The inclusion criteria were peer‐reviewed articles in English or Swedish that used qualitative methods to examine older patients’ (>65 years) mealtime experiences. The Five Aspect Meal Model (FAMM) served as a framework for understanding the complexity behind a mealtime experience. Qualitative content analysis was used as a guide when analysing the material. The search produced 415 studies, 14 of which were included in the review. The findings generated three main themes for understanding how older patients experience mealtimes while in hospital: (1) the food and the food service, (2) mealtime assistance and commensality during mealtimes and (3) the importance of retaining one’s independence. The review also clearly indicated a shortage of studies that solely focus on older patients’ experiences of their mealtime. More research is therefore needed to be fully able to understand the complex task of providing meals in hospitals.

  • Workplace relationships impact self-rated health : A survey of Swedish municipal health care employees
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Work. - 1051-9815. ; 60:1, s. 85-94
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The impact of positive social relationships on the health of municipal employees in the elder care sector in Sweden needs further examination. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between health and relationships among elderly care employees using a salutogenic perspective. METHOD: Survey of all employees (n = 997) in special housing, home care and Disabled Support and Services in a Swedish municipality. The questionnaire, which had a salutogenic perspective, included information on self-rated health from the previously validated SHIS (Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale), psychosocial work environment and experiences, social climate, and health-promoting workplace relationships. RESULTS: The response rate was 69%. Results of a multivariable linear regression model showed four significant predictors of health: general work experiences, colleague belongingness and positive relationships with managers and care recipients. In another model, colleague belongingness was significantly related to satisfaction with care recipients, work, length of employment as well as general work experiences and relationships with managers. CONCLUSION: Strengthening of positive work relationships, not only between workmates but also with managers and care recipients, seems to be an essential area for employee health promotion. Colleague belongingness may be deepened by development of a positive work climate, including satisfactory work experiences, positive manager relationships and a stable work force.

  • Governance and Control of Externalized Water Service Management: Comparing solutions adopted in Italy and Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232. ; 8:3, s. 188-195
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedIn this paper teh challenges imposed on corporate governance of water services in Italy and Sweden are analyzed and compared. From the comparative analysis we notice that with externalization of services more stakeholders become involved in the provision of services. These stakeholders have common as well as divergent interests and the challenge thus become to find an alignment of interest among stakeholders in order to secure a sustainable provision of the services. The comparative analyzis indicate that such alignment is especially difficult when stakeholders have heterogeneous background (public and private sector).

  • The journey of participatory budgeting : a systematic literature review and future research directions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Review of Administrative Sciences. - : SAGE Publications Ltd. - 0020-8523 .- 1461-7226. ; , s. 1-18
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This systematic literature review analyses the body of knowledge on the budgeting practice known as participatory budgeting (PB). This review identifies and analyses a dataset of 139 English-language papers focused on PB in the public sector published over three decades (1989–2019) in academic journals of different disciplines. The findings shed new light on PB, by systematizing this body of knowledge and explaining the PB idea journey. A research agenda is also set by clarifying overlooked areas of research and practical interests. The review provides a conceptual model to cope with specific issues in each phase of a PB journey, and it also sheds light on the role of political and managerial actors. Traditional and new themes to design a PB and implement participatory mechanisms are proposed. Practitioners can benefit from indications about the use of technological tools in mobilizing participation.

  • Public appointments as a tool for public governance : a systematic literature review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Sector Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0951-3558. ; 34:2, s. 171-188
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review previous research on public appointments to systematize existing knowledge, identify gaps and discuss implications for future research in this field. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a systematic literature review, carried out using the Scopus database. We selected academic articles published in journals ranked in the 2018 CABS Academic Journal Guide plus public administration articles in journals classified by Google as falling within the areas of public policy and administration. The papers were analysed according to four categories: geographical area, theoretical framework, research method and organizational setting. Findings – Results show the lack of research regarding areas like Latin America or East Asia; from a theoretical viewpoint, given the lack of explicit theoretical approaches, future research should have more formal and clear theoretical frameworks. Moreover, given the dominance of case study and review/reflectionstudies, alternative research methods, such as surveys or mixed methods are suggested for future works. Research limitations/implications – We identify a new research agenda to revive the focus on public appointments as a tool for intra- and inter-organizational governance in the public sector. Specifically, we argue that how the process of public appointments is managed has huge democratic implications, and publicmanagers have a key role to play in that respect by designing effective governance systems and organizational procedures. The selection of papers has been limited to articles published in peer- review journals ranked in the 2018 CABS Guide; no distinctions have been made regarding journals’ positioning in the ranking. Moreover, this work takes a managerial and organizational approach, while the research on public appointments is clearly interdisciplinary, with previous contributions coming mainly from political scientists. Originality/value – Despite the relevant body of literature on this topic, this study represents the first manuscript to summarize the state of the art of this theme, providing a research agenda on this very relevantbut quite neglected issue in public governance.

  • Information-seeking behaviours of teacher students : A systematic review of qualitative methods literature
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Education for Information. - : IOS Press. - 0167-8329 .- 1875-8649. ; 37:3, s. 287-313
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teachers are the key to an inclusive and quality education for all. Therefore, training teachers and teacher students and understanding how they learn, including information-seeking behaviours, is crucial. This systematic literature review explores the observed research gap regarding teacher students' affective information-seeking behaviours. Of specific interest is the research practice context. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guided the review process. Searches were conducted in three key research databases and resulted in 1006 references. Abstracts and titles were screened and assessed using Rayyan software. After screening, 56 publications were chosen for the qualitative synthesis; 17 used qualitative methods and were thereby of interest for the review. The high number of publications resulted in a need to divide the review into two studies. The first part focused on quantitative and mixed methods studies. The results were then analysed through thematic analysis. The results revealed a research gap regarding qualitative methods studies of non-normative and qualitative features of teacher students' information-seeking behaviours, especially affective behaviours and in research practices. This is the first systematic review of teacher students' information-seeking behaviours using thematic analysis. Thus, a valuable contribution to information-seeking behaviour and information literacy research has been provided.

  • The intersection between 'The Audit Society' and public sector corruption and fraud : - a literature review and future research agenda
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 1176-6093.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This paper aims to explore how the phenomena of corruption and fraud in the public sector have been portrayed in the literature using the Audit Society Framework (Power, 1997). Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a structured literature review (Massaro et al., 2016) to unveil relevant literature in the area of corruption and fraud in the public sector. Findings Results highlight that the literature using “The Audit Society” theory is still scant. Notwithstanding the call for a more decisive role of auditors in fighting corruption and fraud, much is still to be discovered about consequences of auditing and what “good quality” is. Research limitations/implications The main limitation is that only literature in English has been included. Practical implications This paper helps practitioners and policymakers to take and implement informed decisions with regards to the fight against fraud and corruption. Social implications In calling for more research in the domain of audit, fraud and corruption in the public sector, this paper promotes a higher focus of society on public interest and the common good. Originality/value This paper investigates one part of The Audit Society related to corruption and fraud, topics that are still very underdeveloped and unexplored by researchers. From the findings the authors suggest possible new avenues for further research.

  • Does sleep selectively strengthen certain memories over others based on emotion and perceived future relevance?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature and Science of Sleep. - : Dove Medical Press Ltd.. - 1179-1608. ; 13, s. 1257-1306
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sleep has been found to have a beneficial effect on memory consolidation. It has furthermore frequently been suggested that sleep does not strengthen all memories equally. The first aim of this review paper was to examine whether sleep selectively strengthens emotional declarative memories more than neutral ones. We examined this first by reviewing the literature focusing on sleep/wake contrasts, and then the literature on whether any specific factors during sleep preferentially benefit emotional memories, with a special focus on the often-suggested claim that rapid eye movement sleep primarily consolidates emotional memories. A second aim was to examine if sleep preferentially benefits memories based on other cues of future relevance such as reward, test-expectancy or different instructions during encoding. Once again, we first focused on studies comparing sleep and wake groups, and then on studies examining the contributions of specific factors during sleep (for each future relevance paradigm, respectively). The review revealed that although some support exists that sleep is more beneficial for certain kinds of memories based on emotion or other cues of future relevance, the majority of studies does not support such an effect. Regarding specific factors during sleep, our review revealed that no sleep variable has reliably been found to be specifically associated with the consolidation of certain kinds of memories over others based on emotion or other cues of future relevance.
