  • Who Cares and Who Pays? : The Stakeholders of Maritime Human Factors
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Ship Design & Operation. - London : Royal Institute of Naval Architects. ; , s. 69-76, s. 69-76
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims at identifying the key stakeholders in maritime human factors and analyse their interest in, and power to influence the human factors issues. A stakeholder analysis is done and a model displays eight stakeholders from a vessel lifecycle perspective. It is concluded that the interest and the power to influence is much differentiated, largely due to the nature of shipping. An increased public interest in environmental, economic and socio-political sustainability has affected the environmental work in the industry and it is believed that pressure from consumers will lead to increased demands on shipping. It is further concluded that well operated shipping contribute to greater overall efficiency and economy and should offset higher unit freight costs resulting by the use of better maintained and managed ships.

  • Exploring service quality in the health and fitness industry
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Managing Service Quality. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-4529 .- 1758-8030. ; 17:1, s. 41-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to discover quality dimensions for the health‐and‐fitness industry and to examine the salient aspects of the quality‐management practices of organisations in this industry.Design/methodology/approach – The research in this paper uses a grounded‐theory approach to a multiple case study of 15 companies in the Swedish health‐and‐fitness industry. Qualitative methods in the form of in‐depth interviews and observation are utilised for data collection.Findings – The paper finds that a framework for fitness quality management is developed and presented. The quality dimensions are found to be “pleasure”, “mental change”, and “physical change”. The main enablers are defined as “relational competence” and “technical competence”. Other indirect enablers are also identified and described.Research limitations/implications – The paper shows that because the framework is based on qualitative data collection, the relationships are not quantified. This could be an objective of further research.Practical implications – The framework presented in this paper is useful for managers of fitness companies when designing and managing their activities.Originality/value – The paper presents a novel framework of the salient features of quality in fitness services – an industry that has received little scholarly attention in the past. This research also contributes to the general understanding of service quality, and demonstrates the usefulness of inductive qualitative methodology in this regard.

  • Visualizing Invisible Environmental Data in VR: Development and Implementation of Design Concepts for Communicating Urban Air Quality in a Virtual City Model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science Volume 1819 CCIS, Pages 253 - 267. - : Springer. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937. ; , s. 253-267
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As cities continue to grow, the desire to combine densification with sustainability and greenery may present a challenge to air quality, resulting from reduced ventilation caused by dense buildings and vegetation. To support the careful urban planning required, effective and interactive tools that can visualize and communicate information about air quality to stakeholders are essential. In a transdisciplinary research project aiming to explore such visualizations a prototype pedagogical virtual reality tool was developed, allowing users to explore the impact of aspects of the built environment upon urban air quality. The tool was evaluated with adolescents in upper secondary school through interviews and observations, as well as with the general public through a questionnaire study. This paper provides insights, potential solutions, and initial assessments relevant to data visualization in 3D and immersive analytics in urban planning and stakeholder communication. Identified challenges include difficulties with color association and data distinguishability, and as well as tool complexity relating to the many features requested by experts involved in a transdisciplinary project.

  • Manufacturing System Design for Business Value, a Holistic Design Approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271. ; 50, s. 659-664, s. 659-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When designing and developing manufacturing systems, many aspects need to be considered. Typically, the manufacturing design objectives are specified to achieve certain operational requirements around quality, capacity, cost etc. They are also specified withthe intention to ensure efficient processes related to manufacturing, such as maintenance, logistics, not to mention the main process of manufacturing the actual part. This study proposes that a wider company perspective should be considered during manufacturing system design, to achieve a greater business value. The manufacturing system should be designed to create value to other core business processes, such as product development, marketing, sales and services. This paper also presents examples on value perspectives to consider and how this approach can be implemented.

  • Searching for Empathy: A Swedish Study on Designing for Seniors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PervasiveHealth: Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 2153-1633.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a call to rethink how we describe groups of users and create design tools that may influence the design practice and foster specific mentalities. Many times, research literature plays an important part in the design process and decision making, yet the role it has in creating an understanding of the user is seldom discussed. To support a project focusing on designing for seniors, a multidisciplinary team selected relevant literature for the beginning of the design process. The literature selected consisted of 'mental' design tools such as methods, considerations, and design domains to support understanding and designing for seniors. This paper describes the tools suggested by the articles and concludes with a reflection on the effect of the literature we choose on the design process using the project as a design case.

  • Integrated Management Systems : advantages, problems and possibilities
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 13th Toulon-Verona Conference. - 9789729344046 ; , s. 1-12
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effective management in the globalized world requires an effective, efficient and flexible management system. Effective could be interpreted as addressing all relevant stakeholder concerns in a context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Efficient would mean that it does the job with low resource use. Flexibility requires that changed conditions and new requirements easily can be included. Many organizations are already working with Integrated Management Systems (IMS). Interesting questions are to what extent current integration covers the above mentioned needs and if not what changes are needed. This conceptual paper looks at the advantages and problems of integration. Possibilities for development of fully integrated management systems are studied from the perspective of managing stakeholder needs, with the forthcoming ISO 26000 – “Guidance on social responsibility”, as inspiration. Results show that there are advantages in integration, but that the scope and level of integration often is limited. A conceptual model for integrating all stakeholder needs in value networks is presented.

  • Learning for lower energy consumption
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Consumer Studies. - : Wiley. - 1470-6423 .- 1470-6431. ; 38:1, s. 12-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy-efficient technologies are not just objects that might enable households to carry out more sustainable practices; they are tools, and using them effectively requires certain skills and knowledge. Households' difficulties in handling home heating and hot water technologies in particular have been highlighted as an obstacle to meeting energy conservation objectives. This has given rise to calls for improved support based on how the households define their activities and handle these technologies. By deploying a socio-cultural theory of learning and using in-depth interviews with households that have recently purchased renewable heating systems, this paper examines various situations in which people have learnt to use the technologies, and it discusses lessons learnt that may be useful for developing support. The results demonstrate three common learning approaches and identify situations where the learning process runs smoothly and where it does not. The conclusions suggest strategies for helping households overcome the resistance embedded in the interaction with the technologies, and they highlight the importance, when developing support, of starting with what creates meaning in various situations.

  • The Quality Café : developing the World-Café method for organizational learning by including quality management tools
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371. ; 30:13-14, s. 1515-1527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of integrating the World Café method with the affinity diagram tool from quality management. The proposed combination is called the Quality Café. Quality Cafés were carried out at seven spa hotels, one municipality and two student organisations. The cafés were assessed with feedback seminars and questionnaires. The findings show that the method was appreciated by the participants. It contributed to profound dialogues with deepening insights, which stimulated creativity, increased understanding for quality issues and allowed a more holistic view. In addition, the method was experienced as enjoyable and in itself creating coherence. The findings were related to organisational learning theory and several connections were found. The Quality Café should be a useful method for researchers in social science as well as for practitioners. A limitation is that determining the specific effects of the Quality Café method compared to the original World Café is difficult.
