  • Medarbetarsamtal som arena för att befästa normer kring medarbetarskap
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692 .- 2002-343X. ; 16:3, s. 39-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Young People, Class and the News : Distinction, socialization and moral sentiments
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - : Routledge. - 1461-670X .- 1469-9699. ; 9:14, s. 2042-2061
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journalism studies almost exclusively rely on a “sociology of integration” perspective when theorizing the social function of journalism. Focus is put on if and how journalism facilitates democratic processes, encourages civic engagement and strengthens the sense of community. In providing an alternative view, this study mobilizes the cultural sociology of Pierre Bourdieu—a “sociologist of conflict”—in order to study how young people’s conditions of existence have given rise to vastly different orientations towards news and the normative order surrounding journalism. Based on focus group interviews with young people in Brazil and Sweden, the study shows that socialization into the world of news in the family and in school generates class-distinctive news orientations. The world of news is a site where social groups draw moral and cultural boundaries against each other. Since different social groups monopolize completely different news practices and preferences, they work to legitimate social differences. As such, the findings challenge common notions of news as creating the “healthy citizen”, and that news media provide spaces for the practice of civility and citizenship.

  • Networked Intimacies : Pandemic Dis/Connections Between Anxiety, Joy, and Laughter
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Disentangling. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780197571873 - 9780197571880 ; , s. 273-294
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter zooms in on transformations of intimacy and relational spaces in a time of a viral, global crisis. Set against the backdrop of “social distancing” practices, the chapter opens with a discussion of digital intimacy, focusing on the layering of anxiety and anticipation within networked connectivity. Secondly, it moves on to discuss how such anticipatory anxiety may become punctuated by pleasure and joy. Considering the dynamics between physical disconnection and digital intensity within pandemic hookup practices, it explores in particular instances of quarantine humor in queer hookup cultures. This humor stems from impossibly contradictory spaces of self-isolation, desire, and longing, in relation to which the swiftness of the swipe is transformed into a disconnect in the shape of a delay. The chapter ends with an example of Swedish, queer quarantine humor and a discussion of partial disconnections, or selective connectivity in difficult times in the interest of self-care.

  • Arbetsdelningens återkomst i kommunala välfärdsorganisationer
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692 .- 2002-343X. ; 25:3-4, s. 67-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692 .- 2002-343X. ; 14:3, s. 31-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The Performance Appraisal Interview : An arena for the reinforcement of norms for ideal employeeship
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - Roskilde : Roskilde university. - 2245-0157. ; :2, s. 59-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present paper, we report findings from a study of performance appraisal interviews between middle managers and employees. The study is based on analysis of video uptake of authentic performance appraisal interviews, and through detailed examination of participant conduct and orientation, we point to structural mechanisms and institutional norms which limit the possibilities for employees to raise topics connected to negative experiences of stress in performance appraisal talk. It is argued that norms concerning ideal employeeship are shaped by a partly hidden curriculum in the organization which in turn is talked into being in the performance appraisal interviews. The study concludes that empirical attention to the social interplay in performance appraisal interactions reveal how participant conduct aligns or disaligns with institutional and social underpinnings of workplace ideals.

  • Farmer Wants a (Swedish) Wife : White Mobilities in the Reality Romance Show Bonde Söker Fru – Jorden Runt
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: View. - : The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in collaboration with Utrecht University, Luxembourg University and Royal Holloway University of London. - 2213-0969. ; 10:20, s. 64-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss discourses of white mobility in reality television, a genre whose problematic post-racial and neoliberal discourses have long been exposed. Moving beyond the widely researched Anglophone media landscapes, we interrogate the discursive construction of white mobilities in the Swedish romance reality show Bonde Söker Fru – Jorden Runt (TV4, 2019-2020) [Farmer Seeks Wife – Around the World] where Swedish North-to-South migrants working as farmers abroad seek a partner from Sweden through the assistance of reality TV. By focusing on the discursive and visual strategies through which the show perpetuates racial hierarchies, we discuss the colonial imaginaries, the absence of border policies (such as residency, employment, or integration), and the significance of individual migratory preferences in the mobility discourses. We identify three forms of white mobility – the tourist, the adventurer, and the philanthropist – and show that migration is depicted as something reversible, an adventure, and a possibility for self-development, rather than a life-long decision with high stakes.

  • Media and basic desires : An approach to measuring the mediatization of daily human life
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications. - : Mouton de Gruyter. - 0341-2059 .- 1613-4087. ; 46:2, s. 275-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The extended reliance on media can be seen as one indicator of mediatization. But even though we can assume that the pervasive character of digital media essentially changes the way people experience everyday life, we cannot take these experiences for granted. There has recently been a formulation of three tasks for mediatization research; historicity, specificity and measurability, needed to empirically verify mediatization processes across time and space. In this article, we present a tool designed to handle these tasks, by measuring the extent to which people experience that media reach into the deeper layers of daily human life. The tool was tested in an empirical study conducted in Sweden in 2017. The results show that perceived media reliance is played out in relation to three types of basic desires: (1) (re)productive desires, (2) recognition desires, and (3) civic desires, and is socially structured and structuring. We argue this tool, in diachronic analyses, can measure one important aspect of mediatization.

  • The Social Media Balancing Act : Testing the Use of a Balanced Self-Presentation Strategy for Politicians Using Twitter
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Computers in human behavior. - : Elsevier. - 0747-5632 .- 1873-7692. ; 74, s. 277-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Politicians’ clear separation between their professional and private lives has been challenged by a growing need to be seen as personable, especially on social media where this is the norm. Little, however, is known about the effect on a political party when its politicians reveal aspects of their private lives on social media. The present study addresses this question. Through the lens of self-presentation theory, we are the first to test the effect of a balanced presentation strategy on Twitter (i.e., tweets that involve both professional and private aspects of their lives) as opposed to a strictly professional one. A longitudinal design was adopted with 265 Twitter users as participants. The results showed that a balanced strategy increased both interest in the politician’s party and intention to vote for that party, irrespective of a user’s political interest, social media usage intensity, or age, or the gender of either the user or the communicating politician. Furthermore, liking the tweets emerged as a crucial mediator. This study contributes valuable knowledge on self-presentation strategies of politicians specifically, and more broadly regarding self-presentation in the face of context collapse. However we call for future research to validate our experimental findings in a real-life setting. Implications are provided for political parties and others.
