  • Identifying child functioning from an ICF-CY perspective : everyday life situations explored in measures of participation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 33:13-14, s. 1230-1244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. This study was part of a larger work to develop an authentic measure consisting of code sets for self- or proxy-report of child participation. The aim was to identify common everyday life situations of children and youth based on measures of participation. Method. The study was descriptive in nature and involved several stages: systematic search of literature to find articles presenting measures for children and youth with disabilities, identifying measures in selected articles, linking items in included measures to the ICF-CY, analysing content in measures presented as performance and participation and identifying aggregations of ICF-CY codes across these measures. Results. A large number of measures for children and youth with disabilities were identified but only 12 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A slight distinction in content and age appropriateness appeared. Measures presented as performance covered all the ICF-CY Activities and Participation chapters, whereas measures presented as participation covered five of nine chapters. Three common everyday life situations emerged from the measures: Moving around, Engagement in play and Recreation and leisure. Conclusion. Only a small number of life situations for children and youth emerged from items in selected measures, thus, other sources are needed to identify more everyday life situations.

  • Med passionen som drivkraft : En intersektionell analys av genusvetenskap, de studerande och arbetslivet
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - : Föreningen Tidskrift för genusvetenskap. - 1654-5443 .- 2001-1377. ; 35:1, s. 49-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a national Swedish survey among former gender studies students followed by focus group interviews, this article investigates the students’ perspectives on gender studies and work. We ask how they understand their education in between generic critical knowledge and the labor market. How can the students’ backgrounds and talk about gender studies and work be understood intersectionally? What does it mean for the future of gender studies? The analysis is based on intersectional subject positions as developed by Dorthe Staunæss (2003) and compares the results with other critical feminist studies of higher education (Ahmed 2012; Berggren 2006; Mählck 2013; Orupabo 2014). The analytical method uses the concepts “gap” (Åse 2000), ”in sync” (Staunæss 2010) and “comfortable” (Ahmed 2010) in order to understand the contradicting results of the survey and talk in the focus groups. In our analysis we discuss the gaps the students identify between their studies and their experiences of finding work on the labor market as both significant for the humanities and social sciences in general and as specific for gender studies. The gender studies students are however employed and find their education useful on the labor market, a success that they also ascribe (partly) to their privileged background in terms of class and ethnicity. Among the participants persons with academically educated parents and parents born in Sweden were over-represented. The article also discusses what this skewed participation in gender studies education may mean for the discipline and the labor market for gender studies students. Finally it proposes four directions for the future development of gender studies.

  • Reluctantly Solo? : Representations of Single Mothers via Donor Procedure, Insemination and IVF in Swedish Newspapers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Single Parents. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030713119 - 9783030713102 ; , s. 215-234
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter explores representations of single mothers via ARTs (assisted reproductive technologies) in Swedish newspapers. These women are gender-politically interesting to study because they stand as examples of ‘families we choose’ that subvert the hegemony of the nuclear family ideal, and they activate pertinent questions concerning reproductive choices and practices. The mothers in the news articles are typically white, heterosexual and urban, and they, their parenthood and ‘choice’, are framed in particular ways to project maternal and feminine respectability as well as ‘intensive mothering’. This suggests that, although in an international comparison there is generally little stigma attached to single motherhood in Sweden, these mothers need to become ‘understandable’ as good mothers in specific ways to deflect (risk of) stigma.

  • “Teach more, but do not expect any applause” : Are Women Doubly Discriminated Against in Universities’ Recruitment Processes?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Academic Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-1727 .- 1572-8544. ; 20:3, s. 437-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies repeatedly find that women and men experience life in academia differently. Importantly, the typical female academic portfolio contains less research but more teaching and administrative duties. The typical male portfolio, on the other hand, contains more research but less teaching and administration. Since previous research has suggested that research is a more valued assignment than teaching in academia, we hypothesise that men will be ranked higher in the peer-evaluations that precede hirings to tenured positions in Swedish academia. We analyze 861 peer review assessments of applicants in 111 recruitment processes in Economics, Political Science, and Sociology at the six largest Swedish universities. Our findings confirm that the premises established in previous research are valid in Sweden too: Women have relatively stronger teaching merits and men relatively stronger research merits, and also that, on balance, research is rewarded more when applicants are ranked by reviewers. Accordingly, male applicants are ranked higher compared to female applicants.

  • An Overlooked Golden Age? : Representations of the Heian Era in Contemporary Japanese Public History Venues
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Every Picture Tells A Story – The Visualization of Japanese History, Oslo, 10-11 March, 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Heian era (794-1185) saw the authorship of several of Japan’s foremost literary masterpieces, a flourishing of other art forms, and the development of an indigenous writing system. Moreover, it has typically been portrayed by historians as an age of peace and stability. In these and other respects, it would seem like useful material for the creation of a Japanese national identity. Indeed, as early as the 1880s, Suematsu Kenchō translated part of the period’s foremost literary work, The Tale of Genji, into English to show the Western world that Japan had a long history of cultural achievements. As Japan increasingly turned to totalitarianism, however, the Heian era was largely eschewed in favor of later periods of warrior rule and its representative work The Tale of Genji was considered dangerous for its insinuation that the Japanese imperial line was not unbroken since time immemorial. This study investigates how the Heian period is represented in public history fora such as museums and textbooks in contemporary Japan. It contends that despite Japan’s postwar attempt to refashion its image as a peace-loving, cultural nation, the Heian era has not been rehabilitated as a “golden age” but instead is sublated in these contexts. It argues that a variety of factors, especially the period’s sexualization by recent manga and anime versions of The Tale of Genji and Heian society’s different family structures, have led political elites to emphasize the Tokugawa period as the “golden age” in Japan’s past that should be considered representative of its “traditional” culture. The hegemonic power of anime and manga on the Japanese public’s imagining of the Heian era stymies the attempts of public history venues to depict the period as a “respectable” source of pride, leading them to downplay it instead.
