  • Postmodernity and systems science : An evaluation of J.-L. Le Moigne's contribution to the management of the present civilization
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - London : Springer. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 10:4, s. 395-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this text, a French school of systems thought is evaluated with reference to its contribution to postmodernity. The main conclusion is that this system provides some pertinent contribution but that there are also some domains where it does not provide much help. Both these domains are identified and discussed. The text starts with a discussion of the postmodern challenge. This is followed by a presentation and critical evaluation of the theory under consideration. The latter gives rise to the Discussion and Conclusion.

  • An Assessment of the Uber App’s Normative Practice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Philosophia Reformata. - : Brill. - 0031-8035 .- 2352-8230. ; 82:2, s. 192-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyzes a complex case in society, namely, how to distinguish ride-sharing applications, such as Uber, from ordinary taxi enterprises. We conduct a structural analysis of normative practices with distinctions at the following levels: (1) aspects; (2) radical types, genotypes, and phenotypes; (3) part-whole, enkaptic relationships, and interlinkages; and (4) the distinction between qualifying and foundational functions as it is captured in the theory of normative practices. We conclude that the genotype of taxi matchmaking enterprises, of which Uber is an example, represents a novel normativity that could positively serve society and also produce normative challenges, depending on its governance. Therefore, regulators should not dismiss the entire  genotype of taxi matchmaking enterprises, but should address the phenotypes that are illegal or that cannot thrive without the illegal behaviors of its users. This conclusion is clear from the structural and directional sides of the practice.

  • Smart Product-Service Systems (Smart PSS) in Industrial Firms : A Literature Review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 10th CIRP Conference on Industrial Product-Service Systems, IPS2 2018, 29-31 May 2018, Linköping, Sweden. - : Elsevier. ; 73, s. 26-31
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last few decades, the PSS literature has documented industrial firms' transformation from the product dominant logic of business to product-service bundles constituted by machines and related services. This transformation has had several dramatic implications on firms' profitability, strategy, operations, organizational setting, sales and marketing approaches, and R&D practices. However, more recently, industrial firms have started to adopt various smart technologies that are embedded within the PSS. The use of smart technologies in PSS gives rise to the new types of PSS that are referred to in this paper as Smart PSS. Based on a literature review of 43 papers from relevant academic fields, this paper seeks answer to the following research question: what are the value creating features of smart product service systems (Smart PSS) in industrial firms? We synthesize the knowledge on Smart PSS to provide a definition and show the distinctive features of Smart PSS and propose an agenda for future research.

  • Value creation through omnichannel practices for multi-actor customers : an evolutionary view
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 16:1, s. 93-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the omnichannel practices to porpose a conceptual overview to offer guidance on how to handle their inherent complexities.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on a literature review of more than 100 academics papers about the multichannel practices and omnichannel practices in the global market.FindingsTo this end, this paper identifies and addresses three limitations of the contemporary omnichannel literature: the failure to articulate the sources of value creation generated by omnichannel practices, the conception of omnichannel as targeting a single customer actor only and the static conception of omnichannel practices. In response to these limitations, this study offers the following: four sources of value creation based on the business model concept, a multi-actor customer conception, where several actors partake in the overall purchase decision and an evolutionary notion of omnichannel practices in terms of their constitution and use as part of the overall evolution of a marketplaceOriginality/valueThe framework presented in this paper provides a map to take new research beyond its current boundaries and an audit tool to help managers identify their firm’s current omnichannel situation, including limitations and opportunities for further development.

  • Organization information system : extending organizational cognition through intelligent artifacts
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Cybernetics and systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0196-9722 .- 1087-6553. ; 27:3, s. 235-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The question of investigation is, What can intelligent artifacts mean to a command system? By means of a theoretical synthesis of previous works, the present work starts with an epistemological discussion focused on systems thinking. With the organization in focus, an extrospective approach is taken in which a global discussion results in some implications for the organizational system design. This system is considered as a sociotechnological system; consequently, the nature of systems (i.e., complexity) and the nature of human beings (i.e., parts of the systems and who are to be served by the artifacts) are discussed. The result argues that intelligent artifacts can extend the intelligent behavior of organizations. Examples of computer system architecture and software architecture are given.

  • On the Usefulness of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types for the Design of Business Systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - London : Springer. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 17:2, s. 75-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types distinguishes 3 fundamental empirical systems: deterministic, animate, and social, with regard to their purpose. It has been formulated as a meta-model to support understanding, selection, and formulation of management models and theories. It is argued here that this model is also valuable for the interpretation and design of actual, empirical business systems. A study of a malfunctioning business is presented and interpreted with the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model, which supports this argument. Additionally, the study shows a pragmatic value of the proposed “Imperative of Goals Alignment” for the design of business systems, which is an operationalization of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model. Furthermore, the investigation illustrates the importance of clear goals and incentives in business design; and it supports the thesis of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model that management models and theories, founded upon empirical observations of deterministic and animate systems, impose limitations on the design of business systems.

  • Salesforce management factors for successful new product launch
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 69:11, s. 5053-5058
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New innovative products constitute a central source of economic value creation, but in many industries, salesforce management significantly conditions the appropriation of innovative products during their launch. Very little previous research addresses the salesforce management factors that contribute to successful new product launches. This study identifies and examines a set of salesforce management factors that contribute to successful new product launches by drawing on previous studies related to new product launches and salesforce management. The multivariate analysis in this study uses data covering new product launches in the Swedish pharmaceutical industry. This study unearths a complex and unique complementarity pattern of factors resting upon the duality of a highly dynamic marketplace and sales representatives with an innovative personality type, which are complementary with other specific factors such as training, management control, and reward systems. These findings contribute to the literature on new product launches, salesforce management, and firm complementarities and have managerial implications for practitioners who oversee salesforce readiness during new product launches.

  • Research Proposal : Business-to-Business IT Capabilities as Conditioner of Business Model Reconfiguration
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th European Conference on IS Management and Evaluation (ECIME 2015). - : Academic Conferences Limited. - 9781910810569 - 9781910810545 ; , s. 297-299
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a research proposal aimed to explore coevolution of firms' B2B-IT capabilities, at the relationship and network level, and interfirm collaborations to understand how those IT-enabled relationships affect value creation and appreciation through Business Model Change. In the recent years, interfirm collaborations have become critical for competitive success as digital interconnection between products and processes within and across industries proliferated and in turn disrupted traditional industries. Today's competitive landscape forces firms to constantly persuade strategic change and business models are dynamic IT enabled mechanisms which firms execute their intentions for strategic change and interfirm collaborations. Two sets of IT capabilities mentioned to be necessary for Business model reconfigurations, yet IS researchers have not studied how those capabilities are acquired in relation to the firms strategic intentions and how preexisting capabilities affect adaptation of new strategies. Adopting a coevolutionary perspective, we aim to study this phenomenon through an explorative case study.

  • A framework for the constitution of modelling processes : a proposition
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Operational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 145:1, s. 202-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given that the quality of models significantly affects the outcome of their application, it is important to reflect on the process by which they are actually constructed. This is addressed by the proposed Framework for the Constitution of Modelling Processes, which is presented here along with a few examples of its practical application. This framework is founded on Projective Constructivist Epistemology and provides a generic description of modelling processes, including their purpose, behaviour and structure. The framework may serve as a meta-model for the understanding, classification, use and development of the many different contributions to the field of modelling. Over the past five years, the framework has been actively researched, developed and applied in a variety of practical contexts, including the public, military and business sectors.
