  • Problems in Paradise? : Challenges to future democratization in democratic states
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 33:1, s. 25-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What are the challenges to future democratization in states regarded as democratic? This study shows that some states that are traditionally regarded as democratic consist of political institutions in need of further democratization. On average, states that are classified as democratic have one or two institutional dimensions in need of further democratization. The main institutional dimensions in need of democratization are functions of government, rule of law, personal autonomy and individual rights. In order to investigate challenges to future democratization, the study presents a methodology that uses Freedom House Index and Polity Index in a new innovative way.

  • Reimagining Georgia : Images of Georgia Held by the Collective West, Russian, and Georgian Political Elites from 1991 to 2020
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This compilation thesis examines the United States (U.S.), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU), Russian, and Georgian political elites’ images of Georgia from the regaining of Georgia’s independence in 1991 up to 2020. This topic shows the significance of studying the role of the agency of individual leaders and including them as a level of analysis when analyzing different geopolitical setups. The empirical data come from the author’s 102 original interviews with political elites from Georgia, the U.S., NATO and the EU, including presidents, prime ministers, ministers, secretaries, secretaries-general, and Russian foreign policy experts. This dissertation comprises four articles, each using the same research design. The findings of this dissertation show that over time, external and internal political elites hold somewhat varying images of Georgia. These diverging images that mainly emerged after the Rose Revolution of 2003 have a geopolitical character and are crucial for understanding Georgia’s strained geopolitical context. In particular, they reflect a rift between the U.S., NATO, the EU, Georgia, and Russia with regard to the perception of the threat to and cultural status of Georgia. This has chiefly influenced the type of imagery of Georgia that the actors hold and has contributed to the changing geopolitical conditions. Overall, changes in internal and external political elites’ perceptions and attention to image variation help explain policy variation over time.

  • Global Challenges to the Transatlantic World
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transatlantic Studies refer to a recent academic discipline foremost studying the economic, cultural, political, legal, and social linkages between Europe and the U.S. However, the main focus of Transatlantic Studies has shifted somewhat over time. While Transatlantic Studies in a narrow perspective have referred to Anglo-American relations, or at most transatlantic relations including the European Union (EU) and Canada, contemporary Transatlantic Studies have come to put greater attention to a broader geographical scope, including Latin America and Africa. This is foremost due to the political and economic growing importance of many states in Latin America and Africa in international politics and economics. These geographical spaces all border on the Atlantic Ocean and it is the nature and dynamics of these relations over time that are of crucial interest in Transatlantic Studies. There has been a growing notion that in order to understand the common, the national, there is great need to explore the uncommon, the transnational. The growing interest in Transatlantic Studies finds its roots in area studies, but has been reinforced and redeveloped by the notion of globalization. This book addresses challenges to the transatlantic world, reflecting upon the contemporary situation of transatlantic relations at the early 21st century.
