- This chapter conceptualizes and operationalizes the potential of social capital in the making of sustainable strategies for individual firms in localized clusters as well as for the clusters as collectives. Global competitiveness is created out of local collaboration between firms that to a varying degree are internationalized, thereby building generic ‘glocal’ strategies. These strategies are in turn energized by the individual and collective social capital that originates in the egocentric personal networks of the local firms and the sociocentric personal network that the overall cluster of firms constitutes. The personal ties between firms that build these networks concern business or social exchange or a combination of the two. We inform how these features of network ties can be operationalized to provide a database for comparative studies of localized clusters of firms. The overall localized social capital that the cluster contains is activated through spontaneous self-organizing as well as formal organizing. The interaction between the spontaneous and formal structures turns the cluster into an ‘organizing context’, that is, an enacted environment for the local firms that is co-constructed by themselves. To illustrate how clusters build organizing contexts that accommodate glocal strategies by accumulating and using social capital, we tell the story of a Swedish community (Lammhult) and its firm cluster. This is known as ‘The kingdom of furniture’. The proposed model of personal networking and the illustrated example together inform how local actors may successfully initiate a process that aims at the creation of viable glocal strategies anchored in personal relations and networks. A ‘first mover advantage’ enables the cluster representatives to define what further enforcements external private and public bodies may contribute with.

- The success of cooperative relationships is influenced by interorganizational commitment, which is a long-run goal of networks. Our research examined cooperative relationships in the tourism industry to better understand what makes them successful. The study is an extension of previous empirical research on commitment. The overall research questions were: “What factors lead to interorganizational commitment in remote tourism destinations?” and “What are the relationships between the factors?” A literature search was conducted to identify factors related to organizational commitment. Search findings suggested a model proposing that interpersonal commitment mediates the effect of trust and reciprocity on interorganizational commitment. Data for the model was collected from a sample of tourism firms in successful cooperative networks. The theoretical model was purified based on convergent, nomological and discriminant validity as well as construct reliability. Our findings demonstrated that the relationship between trust and interorganizational commitment is in fact mediated by interpersonal commitment. We confirmed that reciprocity is directly related to interorganizational commitment, and is not mediated by interpersonal commitment. Thus, tourism firms should develop cooperative strategies in their networks by focusing on enhancing interpersonal commitment through trust, thereby ultimately helping to strengthen interorganizational commitment.

- Student teachers consider teacher training as an important part of teacher education. Despite this, students’ explicit descriptions of quality in mentoring have not been paid much attention in the Swedish context. This study aims to contribute with knowledge of student teachers’ expressions of quality in mentoring during the teacher training program. Two focus group interviews and seven individual interviews were conducted with student teachers specializing in teaching grades F–3 and 4–6, in teacher training schools that participated in the trial activities in Sweden. Their statements have been analysed based on the theory of social representations. The result shows that three social representations appear: Qualitative mentoring is characterized by a) student’s professional development, b) collegial cooperation, and c) trust. These social representations influence students’ expectations of mentoring and its design. Although the students want to be seen as colleagues, they expect mentors to decide when, where and how mentoring should be carried out, and to have a distinct feeling to use the right type of mentoring at the right time. The mixed professional roles, which is highlighted by the students but seem to be implicit, calls for different forms of mentoring strategies that need to be explicit for both the mentor and the student.

Revisiting information security risk management challenges : a practice perspective

- Purpose – The study aims to revisit six previously defined challenges in information security risk management to provide insights into new challenges based on current practices.Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on an empirical study consisting of in-depth interviews with representatives from public sector organisations. The data were analysed by applying a practice-based view, i.e. the lens of knowing (or knowings). The results were validated by an expert panel.Findings – Managerial and organisational concerns that go beyond a technical perspective have been . found, which affect the ongoing social build-up of knowledge in everyday information security work.Research limitations/implications – The study has delimitation as it consists of data from four public sector organisations, i.e. statistical analyses have not been in focus, while implying a better understanding of what and why certain actions are practised in their security work.Practical implications – The new challenges that have been identified offer a refined set of actionable advice to practitioners, which, for example, can support cost-efficient decisions and avoid unnecessary security trade-offs.Originality/value – Information security is increasingly relevant for organisations, yet little is still known about how related risks are handled in practice. Recent studies have indicated a gap between the espoused and the actual actions. Insights from actual, situated enactment of practice can advise on process adaption and suggest more fit approaches.

- Today, information is a key asset for many organisations. Reducing risks of information compromise is increasingly prioritised. However, there is an incomplete understanding of how organisations with limited security knowledge and experience manage information security risks in practice. Previous studies have suggested that security-novice employees faced with burdensome, complex, and ambiguous security requirements can experience security-related stress (SRS), and ultimately influence their security decisions. In this study, we further this research stream by suggesting that SRS can similarly be found with security-novice managers responsible for developing and practising information security risk management (ISRM). Two organisations were targeted in the study using a case study approach, to obtain data about their practices, using SRS as an analytical lens. The study found various examples where SRS influenced security-novice managers’ decisions, and identifies several stressors and stress inhibitors in the ISRM process and supporting ISRM tools, and discusses the implications for practitioners.

- Cyber security is a key enabler for safe Air Traffic Management (ATM). This paper presents results from an empirical study, in which we have investigated and evaluated the use of the Security Risk Assessment Methodology for SESAR (SecRAM) in European ATM research and development projects. The study was performed with the intention to find and document common issues and aspects that could be improved in the methodology. The results from the study reveal that while most of the practitioners had a positive perception of the methodology itself, they were less satisfied with the process of applying it in their projects. Based on the results, we provide a number of recommendations, which aim to improve the security risk assessment process in the ATM domain.
