  • Postmodernity and systems science : An evaluation of J.-L. Le Moigne's contribution to the management of the present civilization
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - London : Springer. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 10:4, s. 395-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this text, a French school of systems thought is evaluated with reference to its contribution to postmodernity. The main conclusion is that this system provides some pertinent contribution but that there are also some domains where it does not provide much help. Both these domains are identified and discussed. The text starts with a discussion of the postmodern challenge. This is followed by a presentation and critical evaluation of the theory under consideration. The latter gives rise to the Discussion and Conclusion.

  • Clusters as a Take-Off for Glocal Strategies : The Role of Social Capital
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Social Capital and Regional Development. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781783476824 - 9781783476831 ; , s. 469-491
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter conceptualizes and operationalizes the potential of social capital in the making of sustainable strategies for individual firms in localized clusters as well as for the clusters as collectives. Global competitiveness is created out of local collaboration between firms that to a varying degree are internationalized, thereby building generic ‘glocal’ strategies. These strategies are in turn energized by the individual and collective social capital that originates in the egocentric personal networks of the local firms and the sociocentric personal network that the overall cluster of firms constitutes. The personal ties between firms that build these networks concern business or social exchange or a combination of the two. We inform how these features of network ties can be operationalized to provide a database for comparative studies of localized clusters of firms. The overall localized social capital that the cluster contains is activated through spontaneous self-organizing as well as formal organizing. The interaction between the spontaneous and formal structures turns the cluster into an ‘organizing context’, that is, an enacted environment for the local firms that is co-constructed by themselves. To illustrate how clusters build organizing contexts that accommodate glocal strategies by accumulating and using social capital, we tell the story of a Swedish community (Lammhult) and its firm cluster. This is known as ‘The kingdom of furniture’. The proposed model of personal networking and the illustrated example together inform how local actors may successfully initiate a process that aims at the creation of viable glocal strategies anchored in personal relations and networks. A ‘first mover advantage’ enables the cluster representatives to define what further enforcements external private and public bodies may contribute with.

  • Gender-sensitive Business Counselling : Changing the Gendered Pattern and Understanding of Entrepreneurship
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Technology, Commercialization and Gender. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319499222 - 9783319499239 ; , s. 141-175
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter compiles existing studies on gender-sensitive business counselling – an increasingly common policy measure in Western economies to increase the number of women entrepreneurs – and compares them with an empirical case to determine components and effects in order to analyse whether this kind of counselling can change the gendered pattern and understanding of entrepreneurship. Eight components and three effects are distinguished, some of which are specific to gender-sensitive business counselling, while others are similar to general counselling methods, requiring symmetrical relations between counsellor and client and the client’s active role in order to contribute to changes in the gendered pattern and understanding of entrepreneurship.

  • Strategic effects of corporate venture capital investments
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing Insights. - : Elsevier. - 2352-6734. ; 5, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the strategic effects of corporate venture capital investments. Specifically, by studying the deals of 163 corporations over a four-year period, it documents the effects of driving, emerging, enabling, and passive investments on the pool of innovative opportunities available to incumbents and the scale efficiency gains they experience as a result of these investments. The study suggests that by making driving and enabling investments, incumbents position themselves in the industry to take advantage of increased pools of innovative opportunities and improve scale efficiency yields. At the same time, emerging and passive investments are detrimental for both of the strategic goals considered in this paper.

  • Systems Thinking Benefits in Supply Change Management : An illustration of the viable systems model in a supply chain
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-8865 .- 1740-8873. ; 6:3/4, s. 227-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing product development models are solely an organisational matter. They do not take into consideration the whole Supply chain (SC) and its different actors. In this article, we investigate how Supply Chain Management and Viable System Model (VSM) can support and create an effective use of information in product development and hence identify critical linkages in the SC. The aim is to introduce VSM as a framework that enables an analysis of companies’ SCs and visualise vital inter-organisational relationships that should be integrated in product development.

  • A framework for the modelling of tempo-spatial enterprise
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Systemic Studies. - 1751-0589 .- 1751-0597. ; 1:3, s. 231-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework for the modelling of enterprise operations is presented, aiming at enabling a conception of enterprise operations in three explicitly aligned perspectives: its what, or morphology; its when, or temporal position; its where, or spatial position. It is derived from the precepts of a General Systems Theory and its General Process Theory. The practical and empirical benefit of this framework is indicated by a real-life case, a so-called 'Transatlantic Shopping Process', where the models constructed enable management of complexities emerging from enterprise operations.

  • Organization information system : extending organizational cognition through intelligent artifacts
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Cybernetics and systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0196-9722 .- 1087-6553. ; 27:3, s. 235-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The question of investigation is, What can intelligent artifacts mean to a command system? By means of a theoretical synthesis of previous works, the present work starts with an epistemological discussion focused on systems thinking. With the organization in focus, an extrospective approach is taken in which a global discussion results in some implications for the organizational system design. This system is considered as a sociotechnological system; consequently, the nature of systems (i.e., complexity) and the nature of human beings (i.e., parts of the systems and who are to be served by the artifacts) are discussed. The result argues that intelligent artifacts can extend the intelligent behavior of organizations. Examples of computer system architecture and software architecture are given.

  • Assessment as learning in music education : The risk of "criteria compliance" replacing "learning" in the Scandinavian countries
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Research Studies in Music Education. - : Sage Publications. - 1321-103X .- 1834-5530. ; 39:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent reforms in England and the USA give evidence that teaching methods and content can change rapidly, given a strong external pressure, for example through economic incentives, inspections, school choice, and public display of schools' and pupils' performances. Educational activities in the Scandinavian countries have increasingly become dominated by obligations regarding assessment and grading. A common thread is the demand for equal and just assessment and grading through clear criteria and transparent processes. Torrance states that clarity in assessment procedures, processes, and criteria has underpinned widespread use of coaching, practice, and provision of formative feedback to boost achievement, but that such transparency encourages instrumentalism. He concludes that the practice of assessment has moved from assessment of learning, through assessment for learning, to assessment as learning, with "assessment procedures and practices coming completely to dominate the learning experience" and "criteria compliance" replacing "learning". Thus, formative assessment, in spite of its proven educational potential, threatens to be deformative. In this article we will explore to what extent and how this development is visible in two cases, presenting music education in one Norwegian and one Swedish compulsory school setting. Three thematic threads run through this exploration: quality, power, and instrumentalism.
