  • Addressing social sustainability for small-scale fisheries in Sweden : Institutional barriers for implementing the small-scale fisheries guidelines.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines. - Berlin : Springer. - 9783319550732 - 9783319550749 ; , s. 717-736
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Swedish coastal fisheries are not sustainable in terms of the status of their main fish stocks, their economic profitability, and as source of regular employment. Social sustainability commitments in fisheries governance advocated by the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines) have been so far mostly neglected. In this chapter, we bring attention to two institutional settings at different governance levels relevant for the implementation of the SSF Guidelines in the Swedish context. First, we look at the introduction of social goals under the perspective of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Second, we consider national tensions between forces advocating or opposing a further application of market-based economic instruments, often portrayed as an effective cure for all ills, in fisheries governance. Taking into account the logic on which the SSF Guidelines rest, we evaluate in both cases current processes for stakeholder participation in the formulation of fishing policies and strategies in Sweden. We conclude that the inclusion of a social dimension and stakeholder involvement at the EU level face procedural and institutional limitations that prevent the small-scale fisheries sector from exploiting opportunities for change. Further challenges to the implementation of the SSF Guidelines arise when central national authorities’ interpretation of societal benefits opposes other interpretations, and consequently economic calculations take precedence over a participatory process-based, knowledge-accumulating approach to resource management. The SSF Guidelines, therefore, provide important material and intellectual resources to make the most of new chances that can lead to an increased likelihood of change in the direction of sustainable coastal fisheries in Sweden.

  • "När han är arg är han turkisk". Identitetsskapande i Lin Hallbergs kompisbokstrilogi
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: EDUCARE. - : Malmö högskola, Lärarutbildningen. - 1653-1868 .- 2004-5190. ; 4:1, s. 7-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With a background in current theories of identification and identifying processes, our aim is to study how ideologies of identity interpellate children in narrative texts such as Lin Hallberg’s trilogy of Kompisboken, Bästisboken and Svikarboken. We study how the texts offer, mirror and perform various identities in their characterization of children and adults in a multicultural context. The issue is how the different characters are created through chains of articulation, of equivalence and difference, of properties, actions and performances. The four main child characters are construed around two dyads – male and female, native and foreign – and as well as the minor characters – parents and teachers – they display subject positions which are restricted and basically locked in a normative matrix. Thus, these texts do not afford children alternative identity constructions or resistance to stereotypical identities of gender or ethnicity.

  • Doing Conservation Differently: Toward a Diverse Conservations Inventory
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ethnobiology Letters. - : Society of Ethnobiology. - 2159-8126. ; 14:2, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many scientists and environmental activists argue that the scale and scope of contemporary conservation must increase dramatically if we are to halt biodiversity declines and sustain a healthy planet. Yet conservation as currently practiced has faced significant critique for its reliance on reductionist science, advocacy of “fortress”-like preservation measures that disproportionately harm marginalized communities, and integration into the global capitalist system that is the root cause of environmental degradation. The contributions to this special issue, developed from a panel at the Anthropology and Conservation conference co-hosted by the Royal Anthropological Institute and the Society of Ethnobiology in October 2021, collectively argue for what we, borrowing from Gibson-Graham’s diverse economies framework, call “doing conservation differently.” By bringing marginalized, hidden, and alternative conservation activities to light, researchers can contribute, in the spirit of Gibson-Graham’s work, to making these diverse conservations more real and credible as objects of policy and activism. This special issue contributes to inventorying the diverse conservations that already exist, which opens new spaces for ethical intervention and collective action.

  • Intersectionality and climate policy-making: The inclusion of social difference by three Swedish government agencies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space. - : SAGE Publications. - 2399-6544 .- 2399-6552. ; 40:1, s. 180-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change effects, views and approaches vary based on geographical location, class, gender, age and other climate related social factors. It is thus relevant to explore how various government bodies/authorities involved in dealing with climate change represent and act on social difference across diverse societies. This article performs a discourse analysis of climate policy documents from three Swedish government agencies: the Transport Administration, the Energy Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency. This in order to explore how the different agencies represent social difference: what is made visible; what is obscured; what are the implications? We collected a purposive, collated sample of literature through online searches and personal communications with agency staff. We apply an intersectional approach to the sampled literature. The article finds that while each agency articulates an awareness of social difference, this tends to manifest in broad terms. It argues that this has the effect of obscuring differential climate impacts and effects of climate action, with potential environmental justice implications. Finally, the article concludes by proposing that incorporating intersectional approaches will support more effective, inclusive and equitable climate action, in Sweden and elsewhere.

  • Before the killing: Intimate partner homicides in a process perspective, part I
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gender-Based Violence. - : Policy Press. - 2398-6808 .- 2398-6816. ; 5:1, s. 59-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper puts intimate partner homicide (IPH) into a process perspective, and describes the situational precursors that constitute the build-up, i.e. the first stage of the IPH process that precedes the deed. Fifty court files, from cases involving 40 male and 10 female perpetrators, underwent thematic analysis. Our findings indicate that the build-up phase of an IPH is complex and encompasses several different features, of which some are clearly gendered. The results point to an escalation during the build-up: of possessiveness and violent behaviour in male-to-female cases, of alcohol/drug abuse, of mental health problems and/or of fears for the future, often connected to separation. Concurrent with previous research we found that women often kill in the context of their own victimisation. However, also other situations and motives protruded as pertinent. The practical implications of these findings are that practitioners should be particularly attentive to escalation of known risk factors, especially male possessiveness, and be aware that (the victim wanting) a separation may initiate escalation with lethal consequences.

  • Gender and class in urban transport: the cases of Xian and Hanoi
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Environment and Urbanization. - : SAGE Publications. - 0956-2478 .- 1746-0301. ; 22:1, s. 139-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents empirical findings of a study on the mobility situation of people of different gender, age and class in two residential areas each in two fast-growing Asian cities with high rates of motorization, Xian in China and Hanoi in Vietnam. Notable class and gender differences in travel patterns were found in both cities. Respondents in the old and poorer residential areas walk more, while better-off respondents in the new areas use motorized transport modes (car and motorbikes) to a greater extent. The main difference in travel modes between the areas in both cities is that non-motorized modes are used as a necessary means of travel for less well-off people in the old areas, while residents in the new (and better-off areas) can choose to switch to motorized modes for longer distance trips. Further class difference can be found in Hanoi in the use of buses and in Xian in the use of cars. The study found that the differences in travel patterns between women and men are similar to those found between the residents of poor and affluent areas: women walk more and men are more motorized. The study also confirms that in both Xian and Hanoi, despite women’s high rates of participation in the labour market, men still predominate in livelihood-related transport tasks whereas women are more involved in household-related transport tasks.

  • Tourism memories : a collaborative reflection on inclusion and exclusion
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tourism Recreation Resarch. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0250-8281 .- 2320-0308. ; 48:6, s. 820-830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore how people’s differentiated privileged and marginalised positions in society create instances of inclusion and exclusion in tourism. Eight authors utilised their diverse disciplinary and theoretical bases to engage in individual autoethnography and collaborative reflections of their personal experiences of being tourists and hosts. Through our Western and non-Western, White and non-White experiences, we reveal experiences from a multitude of perspectives, and problematise the dominant White racial frame. The methodology illustrates unquestioned privileges and feelings of discomfort when personally faced with exclusionary practices and creates an understanding of how individuals have different experiences of enchantment and the tourist gaze. The experience of marginalisation is serial and dialectical, which illustrates the complexity of tourism. The paper contributes to an enhanced and multifaceted understanding of tourism experiences and proposes measures to reveal issues of exclusion. Also, the use of autoethnography and collaborative reflection as methodological tools provide opportunities for researchers and practitioners to engage in reflexive conversation on discriminatory practices, and how they hinder certain individuals and groups from enjoying tourism products and services.

  • Writings on the Wall: Textual Traces of Transit in the Aegean Borderscape
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Borders in Globalization Review. - : University of Victoria Libraries. - 2562-9913. ; 1:1, s. 7-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Greek island of Lesvos has a centuries-old history as a site of departure, arrival, coexistence and resistance for the forcibly displaced. This migratory chronology, however, was overwritten by the unprecedented attention that Lesvos attracted during the 2015 ‘refugee crisis’. This paper examines vernacular aspects of bordering, specifically the practice of border crossers and other groups standing in solidarity with—or against—them, to inscribe messages on walls in and around carceral and public spaces, viewed as a process of constructing and contesting borders from below. Closely reading numerous inscriptions collected around Lesvos reveals how borders are constructed, enacted and contested from below through borderlanders’ discursive practices on some of the very walls that constitute the EU frontier’s material infrastructure. This study aims to advance understandings of the historical continuity of the Aegean borderscape as a complex landscape of border effects and affects that exceed borders’ legal, infrastructural and political dimensions, while also highlighting the persistence and importance of personal agency, self-authorship and identity reclamation by border populations even in the direst of circumstances.
