  • Models of teamwork: ideal or not? : A critical study of theoretical team models
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Team Performance Management. - : Emerald. - 1352-7592 .- 1758-6860. ; 18:5/6, s. 328-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - There is a tendency in team research to employ concepts of stepwise models, reachingfrom the primitive to the excellent, to suggest that a higher level of evolution is better than the basic and simple. This tendency includes typologies of teams. This article aims to question the relevance of this view.Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected in three steps. In the first step, articles and books analyzing teams and teamwork from stepwise analytical models were collected. In the second step the collected data were classified into different themes. Each stepwise model was classified into one essential denomination. This classification resulted in eight themes. In the third step each theme was analyzed, which led to the fusion of some of the themes.Findings - The conclusion is that a synchronous, complementary or mature team is not necessarily optimal. Contrary to this, a differentiated, sequential or multi team approach can be optimal for some purposes. Team research needs to establish a more open, inductive and critical attitude than at present.Originality/value - The paper highlights the need to observe and use team theories in a balanced and critical way.

  • The Quality Café : developing the World-Café method for organizational learning by including quality management tools
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371. ; 30:13-14, s. 1515-1527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of integrating the World Café method with the affinity diagram tool from quality management. The proposed combination is called the Quality Café. Quality Cafés were carried out at seven spa hotels, one municipality and two student organisations. The cafés were assessed with feedback seminars and questionnaires. The findings show that the method was appreciated by the participants. It contributed to profound dialogues with deepening insights, which stimulated creativity, increased understanding for quality issues and allowed a more holistic view. In addition, the method was experienced as enjoyable and in itself creating coherence. The findings were related to organisational learning theory and several connections were found. The Quality Café should be a useful method for researchers in social science as well as for practitioners. A limitation is that determining the specific effects of the Quality Café method compared to the original World Café is difficult.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractPurpose - The purpose of the paper is to explore the role of learning and physical exercise foremployee health from a quality management perspective. Possible correlations that exist betweenemployees' health, work-integrated learning, physical exercise and dimensions underlyingleadership commitment and participation are examined. A case study has been undertakenat a highly innovative company in Sweden. An additional aim is to examine the possibilities forimprovements for the company has as it is in an expansive state.Methodology/approach - The empirical data are derived from two focus group interviews withselected employees having different functions in the studied organisation and two in-depth interviews.Additionally, a questionnaire has been completed by all employees that were presentduring a company meeting. The interviews are analysed with a method inspired by groundedtheory. In addition a SWOT-analysis was carried out.Findings - The statistical analysis revealed significant correlations between the employees' healthand the dimensions development and being informed. Significant correlation was also found betweenthe employees' health and physical exercise during working hours as well as betweenemployee health and work integrated learning. Moreover, the interviews gave insights into theimportant role that physical exercise during the working day has for employee well-being.Research limitation/implication - Since this is a case study the possibility to generalise thefindings outside the company may be limited.Originality/value - The connection between employee health, work-integrated learning andphysical exercise for employees has not been very well examined in previous research.

  • Workplace health in wellness - a study of Swedish spa-hotels
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Quality and Service Sciences. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1756-669X .- 1756-6703. ; 11:3, s. 395-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose In previous research, quality management practices have been found to be related to better health for employees. Dimensions of health-promoting quality leadership have been defined. The purpose of this study was to identify dimensions of workplace health in the wellness industry and relate them to the dimensions of health-promoting quality leadership. Design/methodology/approach An empirical study involving seven leading spa-hotels in Sweden has been carried out. The first part of the study consisted of quality cafes carried out at each of the hotels. The quality cafe is a novel method, which has the World Cafe-method as its basis, combined with quality management techniques. Based on the findings from the quality cafes, an employee survey was developed. Findings The findings from the study include a definition of five major health dimensions for the employees, namely, happiness, kinship, respect, physical health conditions and control. The dimensions were found to be statistically consistent and correlated with the self-reported health of the respondents. Originality/value Workplace health in the wellness sector, which is growing worldwide, is very scarcely researched.

  • Managing cooperation, coordination, and legitimacy : control of contracted public services
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1368-0668 .- 1758-4205. ; 29:6, s. 1012-1037
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to create knowledge about what factors explain the design of control systems for contracted public services.Design/methodology/approach: Questionnaire data analyzed with structural equation models. Findings – Legitimacy-seeking is the most important driver in explaining intensity in control of contracted public services. Competition increases the intensity of control which is opposite to standard transaction cost reasoning. Coordination requirements do not affect the design of control systems for contracted public services.Research limitations/implications: The study suffers from limitations in the form of the use of perception and questionnaire data and imposes restrictions on empirical generalization. Practical implications: Supplier competition may add control costs rather than lower them. The strong focus on stakeholder alignment may induce more intensive control than necessary for supplier alignment.Originality/value: The authors add important knowledge on the determinants of control system design for contracted public sector services. The authors conceptualize and measure the control system in use in a more compelling manner than previous research.

  • The relationship between supplier control and competition in public sector outsourcing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Financial Accountability and Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0267-4424 .- 1468-0408. ; 34:3, s. 268-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to develop theory and contribute to empirical studies about how the effectiveness of bureaucratic controls in public sector outsourcing is contingent upon supplier competition, and why and how this interaction plays out differently for hard and soft types of outsourced services. In previous inter‐organizational management control (IOMC) research there is a contradiction between theory and empirical results concerning how bureaucratic control and supplier competition interacts in aligning suppliers. While IOMC theory suggests competition reduces the need for bureaucratic control, empirical studies clearly indicate the opposite. We extend previous research and theorizing by differing between the outsourcing of hard and soft types of services and by testing the joint effect of bureaucratic control and competition on supplier alignment. The empirical case for testing theory is outsourcing by competitive tendering in the public sector. We use transaction level data from 166 local government suppliers in Sweden. In accordance with our prediction, the effect of bureaucratic control in aligning suppliers decreases with supplier competition when hard types of services are outsourced. For soft types of services, our results indicate that bureaucratic control is not contingent upon supplier competition. Furthermore, we show that when supplier competition is low the effect of bureaucratic control on supplier alignment is stronger for hard than for soft types of services. These results constitute an important contribution to the central notion of the interplay between bureaucratic control and competition in the IOMC literature.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Research on Quality Assurance and Value Management in Higher Education. - Hersey, PA : IGI Global. - 9781522500247 - 1522500243 - 9781522500254 ; , s. 139-159
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The difference between the professional competence conveyed during education and the competence demanded in working life is substantial and needs to be taken seriously. In this chapter where the case is nursing education, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Learning Integrated Work (LIW), are suggested as pedagogical approaches in Higher Education aiming to integrate scientific knowledge and with practical knowledge, and to provide an analytical perspective where students have the opportunity to develop metacognitive skills and praxis by learning through experiences during internship. One way to achieve this in vocational education to learn from the knowledge and skills used when performing inpractice. By integrating scientific and practical vocational knowledge, one promotes professionalization that is exhibited as Learning Integrated Work (LIW), i.e. the capability to perform the expected tasks and learn at work by using a critical and development-oriented attitude in daily work and actively participate in renewals of work assignments.
