  • Who Counts as a Sexual Subject? The Impact of Ableist Rhetoric for People with Intellectual Disability in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sexuality Research and Social Policy. - 1868-9884 .- 1553-6610.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The ableist rhetoric around sexuality in disability services and beyond can hinder subjective sexual expression and have a powerful impact on health, self-esteem, and everyday life through internalized ableism, structural marginalization, and interpersonal discrimination. The aim of this study was to explore the ableist rhetoric of sexuality and its impact on sexual scripting for people with intellectual disability. Methods: A thematic analysis was carried out on data generated through ethnographic fieldwork at five sheltered accommodations and semi-structured interviews with ten individuals with intellectual disability. Results: The results show that people in Sweden with intellectual disability are desexualized within a moral order that is maintained in post-institutional social care. Through this moral order, which is deeply embedded in an ableist rhetoric about sexual relationships, sexual scripting for disabled people is constrained both inside post-institutional social care initiatives, and in the broader community of “ableist environments.” In response, disabled people employ various strategies of resistance. Conclusions: A rhetoric of positive sexuality should be a guiding principle for successfully supporting the development of sexual agency on each individual’s own term. Policy Implications: We conclude by encouraging the development of initiatives that will empower and support people with intellectual disability to learn about their sexual rights and to find solutions that allow for development of sexual agency and subjectivity.

  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - 1654-5443 .- 2001-1377. ; 40:1, s. 73-95

    • Mental health problems among children and youth is positioned as one of the most urgent public health issues in Sweden today. Both research and official reports assert that mental health issues have increased among adolescents, especially girls, during the last decades. The aim of this study is to investigate how changes in childhood and gender discourses has implicated the construction of young people’s mental health as a public problem since the early 1990s up until today. The empirical material consists of documents published by state authorities between 1990 and 1998, and between 2006 and 2017. The results show that the construction of mental health issues among children and youth is characterized by an ideological and gendered shift, promoting different ideals of childhood. In early 1990s, young people’s poor mental health was understood as a result of social inequality, most common among working-class boys with behavioral problems. Today, it is framed as an introvert phenomenon most common among girls, who are depicted as having trouble handling stress and performance-related pressure. In this shift, the child (read boy) is initially framed as a “child of society” in need of support, to later on being defined as a “competent child” (read girl) who has the responsibility to create a good life for herself. In this way, the construction of mental health among children and youths reflects how gender orders are reformulated in the individualized era, where young girls who do not embody neoliberal ideals of independency, flexibility, and female empowerment are framed as mentally fragile and in crisis. Furthermore, the construction shows how current ideas about the child as a competent actor has central implications for today’s understanding of young people’s mental health.

  • Outdoor Office Work : An Interactive Research Project Showing the Way Out
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physical boundaries of office work have become increasingly flexible. Work is conducted at multiple locations outside the office, such as at clients' premises, at home, in cafés, or when traveling. However, the boundary between indoor and outdoor environment seems to be strong and normative regarding how office work is performed. The aim of this study was to explore how office work may be conducted outdoors, understanding how it is being experienced by office employees and identifying its contextual preconditions. Based on a two-year interactive research project, the study was conducted together with a Swedish municipality. Fifty-eight participants engaged in the collaborative learning process, including 40 half-day workshops and reflective group discussions, co-interviews, and participants' independent experimentation of bringing work activities outdoors. Data was collected via interviews, group discussions and a custom-made mobile application. The results showed that a wide range of work activities could be done outdoors, both individually and in collaboration with others. Outdoor work activities were associated with many positive experiences by contributing to a sense of well-being, recovery, autonomy, enhanced cognition, better communication, and social relations, but also with feelings of guilt and illegitimacy. Conditions of importance for outdoor office work to happen and function well were found in the physical environment, where proximity to urban greenspaces stood out as important, but also in the sociocultural and organizational domains. Of crucial importance was managers' attitudes, as well as the overall organizational culture on this idea of bringing office work outdoors. To conclude, if working life is to benefit from outdoor office work, leaders, urban planners and policymakers need to collaborate and show the way out.

  • A systematic approach for identifying lean and green improvements related to packaging material in assembly
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Swedish Production Symposium 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One significant environmental impact from assembly operations includes packaging material use and subsequent waste generation. Although current practice involves reduction of unnecessary materials handling, there is potential to adapt packaging material in order to simultaneously improve the environmental performance and reduce cost in a “lean and green” mindset. Hence, with increased emphasis on sustainable and efficient production systems, there is a growing need for analysis and decision support tools to be used by operators and engineers as well as management. This paper approaches the gap by presenting an industrial application in the form of a set of simplistic analysis methods, as a systematic approach for identifying lean and green improvement potentials for packaging material in assembly. The methodology uses the advantages of eco-mapping, waste sorting analysis and material handling analysis and combines them with the systematic prioritisation of the five-step waste hierarchy and Bill of Material (BOM) structure. A pilot test indicates that a systematic use of these tools can be an efficient decision support for implementing focused improvements, providing cost reductions, productivity improvements and resource savings. Hence, the methodology adds to the general assembly optimisation toolbox, providing rapid answers for packaging decisions, including materials usage, handling and disposal processes.

  • Chemical Management Services from a Product Service System Perspective : Experiences of fluid management services from Volvo Group metalworking plants
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis analyses fluid management services (FMS) in metalworking industry and determines environmental and economic outcomes of FMS as compared to traditional, in-house, fluid management. Fluid management services, or as it is often called chemical management services (CMS), mean that the suppliers of chemicals are also involved in managing and maintaining the fluids in the use phase. Usually one supplier is responsible for managing all the different fluids on a site, but the management may be restricted to some processes or fluids only

  • Sustainable metal working fluid systems : Best and common practices for metal working fluid maintenance and system design in Swedish industry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Manufacturing  (IJSM). - Sweden. - 1742-7223 .- 1742-7231. ; 2:4, s. 276-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the function of metal working fluid (MWF) emulsions in automotive industries in Sweden and looks at how the negative environmental and health impact of their use can be reduced through means of monitoring and system design. Major input to this study has been collected from several of the large companies in Sweden, through a literature review, interviews, questionnaires, findings from workshops and comparisons with other countries. The mapping of this data was carried out, firstly by defining several concepts and terms related to MWFs in order to give an unambiguous terminology. The MWF system design, with its impact on economical, environmental and health and safety parameters, is then described more in detail. Finally, applied monitoring methodologies are reviewed and analysed in terms of common and best practices. Insights gained were formulated as general recommendations for designing a state-of-the-art sustainable MWF system. The article gives examples of how these recommendations translate into practical design features and requirements of monitoring, and maybe of interest for professionals and researchers working with machining technology, process fluid system design and control methodology.

  • Use of environmental value stream mapping and environmental loss analysis in lean manufacturing work at Volvo
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Swedish Production Symposium, SPS11. - Lund, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green production systems requires efficient production and low use of resources such as energy, material etc. To achieve this, there is a need for further development of continuous improvement tools in the “lean and green” area. This work deals with environmental value stream mapping (Environmental-VSM), which has been applied in two case studies at Volvo Penta Vara and Volvo Construction Equipment Braås. In the performed studies Environmental-VSM, as described by the US-Environmental Protection Agency, has been extended by the introduction of a loss model to show environmental losses. The combination of methods provides the user with hands-on tools supporting strategic as well as operational management. Examples of practical improvement actions that were found include reduction of energy use trough minimising idling losses and floor space as well as reduced waste flow through lowered packaging material usage.

  • Towards a Green Energy Economy? : Assessing policy choices, strategies and transitional pathways
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 179, s. 1283-1292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term 'Green Energy Economy' (GEE) received increasing policy and scientific attention following the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, leading to the implementation of numerous 'Green Growth' economic stimulus packages that targeted low-carbon energy technologies. These initiatives were portrayed as key elements in the transition to a green economy, in which low-carbon energy systems would play a vital role. However, and setting aside conceptual variations, uncertainties and fragmented knowledge remain in the interplay between a green economy, low-carbon energy systems and governance. This research area raises various questions regarding the performance, implications and complexities of policies and strategies addressing GEE transitional pathways. In addition, achieving a GEE compatible with climate, social and economic goals is an enormous challenge for society, and goes beyond the technological domain. This special issue provides a series of articles that critically investigate these concerns from an interdisciplinary point of view, and provide relevant policy insights using a variety of analytical approaches. Overall, they call for strong leadership, ambitious policy instruments, rigorous assessments, effective multi-level governance, inter/national cooperation, institutional capacity development, and the immediate alignment of the financial system with the energy sector on numerous challenges associated with the GEE transition. It is concluded that not only from an environmental point of view, but also due to economic and social reasons, the GEE transition needs to be accelerated and that a radical transformation is required.
