  • Sami tourism in marketing material : a multimodal discourse analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Borealia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0800-3831 .- 1503-111X. ; 39:2, s. 115-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of tourism marketing communication is an important aspect that contributes to the understanding of how destinations and locals are portrayed. Through the so-called circle of representation, images can spread from tourism marketing to other media, such as tourism photography. Marketing material in the form of 118 brochures, 3000 Instagram posts and a guidebook portraying the Sami population mostly in Swedish Lapland, but also in Finnish Lapland as well as Finnmark, Norway, have been collected and analyzed. The focus is on pictorial and textual elements and eight previously conceptualized themes have been used to guide the analysis. The focus was on the portrayal of the Sami Indigenous population. The materials were collected through a direct qualitative content analysis and analyzed through a multimodal discourse analysis. The results show that there is still a tendency to portray the Sami based on exoticism. This can spread to different media channels, but there are also discrepancies that hint at a gradual change in how Indigenous populations such as the Sami are presented. The results of this study show the potential for the use of social media channels such as Instagram for Indigenous entrepreneurs and destination management organizations to educate, attract and entice potential visitors.

  • Understanding hallmark event failure : A case study of a Swedish music festival
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Event and Festival Management. - 1758-2954 .- 1758-2962. ; 8:2, s. 172-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeHallmark events can be very beneficial for host communities, not least due to their potential in attracting tourists. The Peace & Love music festival was the hallmark event of the Swedish city Borlänge. In 2013, the event organization declared bankruptcy and canceled the forthcoming festival. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the factors that caused the failure of the 2013 Peace & Love festival.Design/methodology/approachThe case of the Peace & Love festival is analyzed using three data sources: interviews with the former members of the event organization; secondary data describing the Swedish festival industry; and festival visitors’ perspectives represented by comments on social media. An organizational ecology perspective frames the analysis.FindingsThe results of the study reveal that the failure of the event can be understood by a combination of three components: an organization in a vulnerable position, a strong new competitor entering the Swedish festival market, and uncertain visitors searching for the new place to be.Originality/valueVery few studies have researched event failure, although the subject is a recommended priority within the field of festival studies. This study presents a thorough examination of a hallmark event failure, which contributes to this area of knowledge and provides relevant information for organizations and host cities.

  • Instagramming nature-based tourism experiences : a netnographic study of online photography and value creation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tourism Management Perspectives. - : Elsevier. - 2211-9736 .- 2211-9744. ; 34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research is to explore the role of online photography in creating experience value in nature-based tourism, and what types of experience value are conveyed through photography-based user-generated content. The paper draws from existing literature in defining tourism experience value as a subjective, inter-subjective and inter-contextual construct, performed by situated valuation practices. Consequently, the paper presents interpretive and participatory netnography as an effective method to investigate experience value, and identifies online photography on Instagram as both a valuing practice and a valuing place. Results show the capability of online photography-based UGC to create multidimensional values from strategic combinations of textual and visual content. Simultaneously, new dimensions of experience value are introduced, which exist beyond single tourism experiential encounters, but critically contribute to an iterative experience valuation. Finally, Instagram posts introduce valuation timelines that can elude linear models of pre/in-situ/post-experience valuation, and assume subjective and fluid connotations.

  • Liminality in nature-based tourism experiences as mediated through social media
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tourism Geographies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-6688 .- 1470-1340. ; 22:2, s. 413-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intersection between social media, liminality and nature-based tourism experiences hasn't been the focus of previous tourism research. Such intersection, on the other hand, is illustrative of how social media relate to the constitution and performance of tourism spatialities, tourist identities, storytelling and place-making, and can lead to relevant theoretical contributes. We aim to investigate how liminality is expressed in relation to nature-based experiences by tourists on social media, and what role social media plays in mediating liminality during nature-based tourism experiences. The analysis is based on a participatory netnography of images and text posts, as well as online interviews with users of the popular social media Instagram. Findings show that the expression of tourism experiences in nature is closely related to specific notions of liminal otherness as opposed to the urban life and the everyday, where nature and wilderness are expressed as related to the genuine, the authentic and a true inner self. Creative combinations of pictures, captions and hashtags make it easier for tourists to express the contrast between the natural landscape and the everyday landscape once they returned home. These combinations also relate closely to performances of resistant and alternative selves and communities. At the same time, such performances are mediated and contested between freedom of self-expression, surveillance and social norms, an aspect that makes their liminal nature ambiguous.

  • Values, emancipation, and the role of knowledge in tourism education. A critical realist perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1531-3220 .- 1531-3239. ; 22:1, s. 36-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Values are important in education and their role in university studies is central in tourism teaching as well. How values are communicated to students is an important aspect of our axiological approach. In order to promote a fruitful approach to values in the students, this conceptual paper discusses the role of theoretical knowledge in achieving empowerment for the students based on the tenets of critical realism and on Gramsci’s philosophy. As students acquire disciplinary theoretical knowledge, they also develop the tools to make ethical evaluations. Knowledge is meant as the best possible understanding that we have of the world at the moment and it is always possible to achieve a better explanation of a phenomenon. Through an approach based on theoretical knowledge integrated with other creative ways to teach, the students can develop an ethical sensitivity and a flexible set of skills for both the workplace and academia.

  • Income elasticity of demand for tourism at Fulufjället National Park
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 24:1, s. 51-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • National Parks are significant markers in the tourism attraction system and represent an important supply of recreation opportunities for the clients of the nature-based tourism industry. In this study, we analyze income elasticities among visitors from two major nationalities at Fulufjället National Park (FNP)—a cross-boundary park between Sweden and Norway—to see if this tourism product is a luxury or not. Modeling demand with a Tobit model, we find that visiting this National Park is close to a luxury, but results also show that elasticities differ across both income and nationality: FNP is more likely to be a luxury good among low-income Germans and high-income Swedes. The article concludes with a discussion on policy and management implications from these results.

  • Engaging workshops as a method in design of field experiments and behavioural interventions : The case of climate-friendly food choices at a Swedish mountain tourism destination
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Participatory approaches to development for desirable tourism futures. - Poorvo : HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences. ; , s. 143-146
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is widely recognized that food consumption is a key contributor to climate change, making up around a third of emissions in developed countries. Tourism and hospitality, which accounts to around 8% of global greenhouse gas emission, is of high relevance in food consumption. Nudging or “boosting” consumers to choose more sustainable food and beverage options would be one way to reduce the industry's overall climate footprint. Field experiments in a natural setting provide the ultimate test to examine if such interventions could have the intended “boosting” effect. However, conducting a successful field experiment involves several challenges. Engaging the company partner is one key challenge where scientific quality criteria as well as practical and business-related issues in the implementation of the experiment must be understood and negotiated. Through two initial workshops using Open Space and Design Thinking as facilitating workshop methods, more methodologically valid and practically effective behavioural interventions have been identified. Two restaurants serve as case in our study and restaurant staff, managers and researchers participated in the workshops. Our findings so far, show that staff knowledge on sustainable food as well as on guest satisfaction are key factors for the implementation of the field experiments. Results from this study will have practical implications for tourism providers aiming to trigger more sustainable behaviour. Further, this study advances knowledge on the challenges and opportunities food service providers in tourism face in offering more climate-friendly choices to their customers.
